If someone posts a Facebook Marketplace listing under your name, report the listing through its available report control and report any impersonating profile separately. Save the listing URL and screenshots first if it is safe, monitor Facebook’s Support Inbox for the decision, and use facebook.com/hacked only if your own account shows signs of compromise. If the incident includes financial identity misuse in the United States, follow the FTC’s recovery process at IdentityTheft.gov.
Decide which problem you are dealing with
A listing can misuse your name without anyone accessing your Facebook account. It can also be part of a larger impersonation or identity-theft incident. Choosing the correct report target prevents you from sending every problem through one form and gives you a record of the action Facebook can actually evaluate.

| What happened | Primary action | Additional action |
|---|---|---|
| A Marketplace listing uses your name, photograph, address, or other identifying details, but no separate profile is pretending to be you. | Report the listing or the Marketplace seller using the control available on the listing. | Keep the URL, screenshots, and dates for your records. |
| A Facebook profile is presenting itself as you. | Report the profile through Facebook’s imposter-account route. | Report the related Marketplace listing as a separate item. |
| You cannot access your account, or you see posts, messages, listings, or other activity that you did not create. | Use Facebook’s hacked-account recovery flow at facebook.com/hacked, preferably from a device you have used before. | After recovery, review what was posted or changed and alert affected contacts through a trusted channel. |
| Someone used your identity to open accounts, make purchases, obtain credit, or cause another financial loss in the United States. | Contact the affected companies and start the FTC recovery steps at IdentityTheft.gov. | Consider the fraud-alert, credit-freeze, credit-report, and credential-change measures described by the FTC. |
A fake Marketplace listing by itself does not establish that your Facebook account was hacked or that financial identity theft occurred. Treat those as separate possibilities and take the extra steps only when the facts support them.

Listings and profiles can change or disappear while a report is pending. If you can do so without contacting the suspected impersonator, preserve enough information to identify what happened later.

- Take screenshots showing the listing title, price, photographs, seller name, description, location, and any visible contact details.
- Capture the seller’s profile URL and screenshots if the profile is also using your identity.
- Record the date and time, what name or image was copied, and when you first noticed it.
- Save messages, emails, or voicemails from people who were contacted by the fake seller. Keep original files where possible rather than editing the images.
- Store the record in a private location. Do not post identity documents, phone numbers, home addresses, or other unnecessary personal information publicly.
Do not send the suspected seller a copy of your driver’s license, passport, Social Security card, or other identity document to “prove” who you are. Do not click links they send or arrange an in-person meeting merely to collect evidence. A report can be made from the information already visible on Facebook.
Report the fake Marketplace listing or seller
Facebook’s shopping-safety guidance includes a route for reporting a Marketplace seller: Tips for Shopping Safely. The live interface can differ by device, region, account state, and later design changes, so use the report control that Facebook displays rather than relying on a fixed sequence of menu names.
- Open the listing. Use the saved URL if you have one. If the listing is still visible, open it from Marketplace while signed in to the account you normally use.
- Find the listing’s report control. Look around the listing’s options or more-actions menu for the available report command. Facebook may place the control in a different location on the web and in its mobile apps.
- Choose the reason that most closely describes the conduct. Explain that the seller is using your name or identity without permission. If the listing is also deceptive, unsafe, or otherwise violates the choices Facebook presents, select the accurate category rather than guessing at a legal label.
- Submit the report and save the confirmation. Take a screenshot of any confirmation screen or reference number. If Facebook asks for information, provide only what is necessary through Facebook’s own reporting interface.
- Report the seller when Facebook offers that separate option. A listing and the account behind it are different targets. Reporting both gives Facebook a report on the specific content and, where available, the seller account.
The exact prompt names and the number of screens are not fixed. If you do not see an obvious report command, check the listing’s current options menu, open the seller’s profile and look for its report route, or use Facebook’s Help Center guidance linked above. Do not assume that a missing button means the conduct is permitted; it may reflect your account state, the listing’s status, or an interface variation.
Report a profile that is impersonating you
A profile that claims to be you requires its own report. Facebook’s hacked-account and related Help Center guidance provides an imposter-account reporting route at this Help Center page. Use the route Facebook currently presents and identify the profile as pretending to be you.

- Open the suspected profile and copy its profile URL before taking any action that could make it harder to find.
- Use the profile’s report option and select the impersonation or pretending-to-be-someone reason that Facebook displays.
- State that the profile is using your name, photographs, or other identifying information. Distinguish your real profile from the imposter by giving the URL of your genuine account when the form permits it.
- Submit the report and keep the confirmation with your listing evidence.
- If that profile also created a Marketplace listing, submit the listing report separately. A profile report does not automatically mean that every piece of content connected to it has been reviewed as a Marketplace report.
Do not create a second account solely to confront the impersonator, and do not publish a public post containing the person’s private information. A short warning to people who may be contacted is safer than a public exchange that reveals more of your own data.
Check Facebook’s decision and request another review when offered
Reporting does not guarantee removal. Facebook says reported content is evaluated against its Community Standards and is acted on when Facebook determines that a violation exists. Its explanation is available at Why didn’t Facebook remove the content that I reported.
- Open Facebook’s Support Inbox and look for the report’s decision or status.
- Read which listing, profile, or other content the decision covers. A decision about the listing may not be a decision about the seller’s profile.
- If Facebook displays an option to request another review, use it and explain the specific identity misuse that remains. That option is not presented for every decision.
- Keep the decision and any review result with your private evidence record.
Do not treat a “no violation” decision as proof that the seller is legitimate. It means Facebook did not find a Community Standards violation under the review that produced that decision. You can still warn people at risk, preserve evidence, and use law-enforcement or consumer-protection channels appropriate to your location.

Use the hacked-account flow only when your account is compromised
A fake listing that merely copies your name is not proof that an attacker entered your account. Look for direct signs such as an inability to log in, an unfamiliar password or email change, messages you did not send, listings you did not create, or other unauthorized activity on your profile.

If those signs exist, go to facebook.com/hacked and follow Facebook’s recovery instructions. Facebook recommends using a device you have used before, which can help its recovery system recognize the account. Complete the prompts for the account you believe was compromised rather than opening another report about the Marketplace listing.
Once access is restored, review the account for unfamiliar listings, posts, messages, profile changes, and contacts who may have received a fraudulent request. Tell those contacts through a phone number, email address, or other channel you already know to be genuine. Keep the original evidence even if Facebook removes the unauthorized content; it may be needed for a bank, an affected customer, or a later report.
Respond to financial identity misuse in the United States
Use this section only when the incident went beyond a deceptive listing and someone actually used your financial or other identity information. Examples include an account opened in your name, an unauthorized purchase, a loan or service application, or a charge you do not recognize. The listing alone does not establish that any of these occurred.

- Contact each affected company. Tell the bank, card issuer, merchant, lender, phone provider, or other company that the transaction or account is unauthorized. Ask what it requires to close the account, stop further charges, reverse a transaction, or document the dispute.
- Change compromised credentials. Change passwords and other login credentials for affected accounts and for any account that reused them. Use the company’s genuine website or a phone number from a statement, card, or official correspondence rather than a link supplied by the suspected seller.
- Review your credit reports. Look for accounts, inquiries, addresses, or balances you do not recognize and follow the reporting agencies’ dispute instructions.
- Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze. The FTC describes these as available tools for limiting new-account fraud. Choose the option that fits your situation and follow the identity-verification instructions from the credit bureaus.
- Make an FTC identity-theft report. The FTC says its service creates an Identity Theft Report and a recovery plan. The FTC does not resolve individual consumer reports, so continue working directly with the companies and agencies involved.
IdentityTheft.gov is a U.S. federal resource. People outside the United States should use their country’s consumer-protection, banking, credit-reporting, and police channels; the Facebook reporting and hacked-account routes remain separate platform actions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Warn people who could be targeted
If the fake seller is contacting your friends, customers, neighbors, or community groups, send a factual warning through a known-good channel. Include the seller name, the fact that the Marketplace listing is not yours, and what recipients should do if they already sent money or personal information.
- Tell recipients not to pay, share verification codes, or send identity documents to the fake seller.
- Ask anyone who interacted with the seller to preserve their own messages, receipts, and transaction records.
- Do not forward a suspicious payment link or repost the listing more widely than necessary; additional exposure can create more victims.
- Keep your warning free of unnecessary private information about yourself or other people.
Troubleshoot common reporting problems
The listing disappeared before you could report it
Use the URL, screenshots, seller profile address, and dates you saved to document what happened. If the seller profile remains, report the profile through the imposter route. If someone lost money or disclosed financial information, give the affected company and the appropriate U.S. recovery service the records you kept.
Recommended Free Tools
You cannot find a report button
Check the listing’s current options menu and the seller’s profile options, then consult Facebook’s shopping-safety guidance. Labels and locations change across app versions and account states. Avoid third-party “reporting services” that request your password or identity documents.
Best Value
Facebook leaves the content up
Read the decision in Support Inbox. If Facebook presents another-review option, use it with a concise explanation and your strongest identifying facts. If no review option appears, continue the non-Facebook steps that fit the harm: warn affected people, contact a company involved in a transaction, or use the appropriate government or law-enforcement channel.
The impersonator asks you to prove your identity by sending documents
Do not send documents through a Marketplace message. Use Facebook’s own reporting interface and, for an account compromise, the official hacked-account address. A request from the suspected seller is not an authentication process.
You cannot access your own account
Stop trying to resolve the issue through the inaccessible profile and use facebook.com/hacked from a previously used device. Ask trusted contacts to preserve the listing URL and screenshots while you work through recovery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep the cases separate in your records
For clarity, maintain one note for the Marketplace listing, one for any impersonating profile, one for possible Facebook-account compromise, and one for financial losses. Record the URLs, screenshots, dates, report confirmations, Support Inbox decisions, company case numbers, and people you notified. This prevents a listing report from being mistaken for an account-recovery request or an identity-theft report.
The practical sequence is therefore: preserve evidence safely, report the listing, report an impersonating profile if one exists, monitor Support Inbox, recover a hacked account only when there are signs of compromise, and use the FTC’s U.S. recovery process when financial identity misuse actually occurred.
