With Android Auto running, start voice control by saying “Hey Google,” tapping the microphone on the car display, or holding the steering-wheel voice button until the listening tone. Say Reply to [contact name], dictate your message, and wait for Gemini or Google Assistant to read it back. Say that it is ready to send, or tell the assistant to cancel or change it. This keeps message composition off the screen while you drive.
What you need before replying
The hands-free reply flow depends on four things: Android Auto must be connected, your phone and vehicle must support it, the messaging app must be compatible with Android Auto, and the car’s microphone must be able to hear you. You do not need to buy a separate accessory specifically for this feature; it uses the microphone and controls already in a compatible phone-and-car setup.

- A connected Android Auto session: The Android phone must be connected to the vehicle or aftermarket receiver and Android Auto must be visible on the car display.
- A compatible messaging app: Android Auto can handle SMS and messages from supported messaging apps. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are examples used in Google’s voice-command guidance, but support and available actions can differ between apps.
- A working microphone: Voice commands need the vehicle microphone, the receiver microphone, or another microphone provided by the installed system.
- A stationary-safe plan: Android Auto blocks some interactions while the vehicle is moving, including typing messages on the screen. Use speech instead of trying to work around those lockouts.
Exact prompts and icons can vary by vehicle, receiver, Android version, account, and whether Gemini or Google Assistant is active. Follow the assistant name and controls shown on your current display rather than assuming every car has identical menus.

Use whichever activation method is practical in your vehicle. Each method opens the same listening state, after which you can give a message command.

Say “Hey Google”
With Android Auto connected, say Hey Google and wait for the assistant to begin listening. Speak only after it responds or the listening indicator appears. If the system does not react, use the display microphone or steering-wheel button instead; activation settings and wake-word availability can differ by phone and account.
Tap the microphone on the Android Auto display
Tap the microphone icon on the Android Auto interface, then wait for the listening tone or indicator before speaking. Keep your eyes on the road and use this only when it can be done without distracting you. If the car is moving, avoid searching through menus or attempting to type.
Hold the steering-wheel voice button
Press and hold the vehicle’s voice-command button until you hear the tone, then speak. A quick tap may start the car maker’s own voice system instead of Android Auto; holding the button for the full listening tone is the documented Android Auto procedure. Release the button and wait for the assistant to process your request.

Give a direct reply command
Once the assistant is listening, identify the person and the action in one sentence. The most direct pattern is:
Reply to [contact name]
For example, say Reply to Alex. Android Auto uses the incoming conversation and contact name to determine which message thread you mean. If more than one contact has a similar name, the assistant may ask you to clarify; answer with the requested contact information instead of starting the command over.

Google also documents broader message commands. You can say:
Send a text to [phone number]when you want to start a new SMS conversation.Message [contact name] on WhatsAppfor an app-specific message request when that app is installed, signed in, and supported by Android Auto.
Use the app name only when you need to select a particular service. For a reply to a notification already shown in Android Auto, naming the contact is usually the shortest route.
Dictate, review, and send the message
- Speak naturally. After the assistant opens the reply action, dictate the complete message in your normal voice. Include punctuation verbally when it matters, for example, “I’ll be there at six, period.” You do not have to compose the sentence one word at a time.
- Let the assistant finish processing. Do not press another control while it is converting your speech to text. Gemini is designed to understand natural speech, and Google’s current guidance also provides an option to edit a message when the interface offers it.
- Listen to the read-back. Android Auto reads the drafted message aloud before sending. Google describes the flow this way: “After you say your message, Gemini or Google Assistant will repeat it and confirm if you are ready to send.”
- Confirm, cancel, or refine. If the wording is correct, tell the assistant to send it, such as
SendorYes. If it is wrong or you changed your mind, sayCancel. If the assistant supports a correction prompt on your screen, ask it to revise the wording and then listen to the new read-back.
Do not treat the first transcription as final. Names, addresses, times, and short words can sound alike, so use the read-back to catch an error before the message leaves your phone. If the assistant asks for confirmation and you do not answer, the message should remain unsent.
Use a notification’s quick reply instead
When a new message appears as an Android Auto notification or tile, you can tap it, choose Reply, and select a suggested response. Suggested replies are useful for short acknowledgments such as confirming that you saw a message, because they require less speech and fewer decisions.
You can also choose the custom-reply option from that same interface and dictate your own text. A custom spoken reply still goes through the assistant’s read-back and confirmation step. Choose the path that matches the message rather than trying to force every response into one method.

The suggested-reply choices and the number of available options depend on the app and notification. They are not evidence that every messaging service supports the same Android Auto features.
Reply to WhatsApp and other compatible apps
Android Auto supports sending, receiving, and listening to messages through messaging apps that integrate with it. Google’s examples include WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. To target one service, identify it in the command, for example Message Sam on WhatsApp. To answer an existing notification, opening the notification and choosing Reply may be clearer than naming the service.
Compatibility is not all-or-nothing. An app may allow incoming notifications and spoken replies but omit a particular control, suggested responses, or a feature available in SMS. App updates, Android Auto updates, phone permissions, account status, and vehicle software can all affect what appears. If an app does not appear as a reply option, do not assume that a different phrase will unlock it; first check that the app is installed, signed in, permitted to show notifications, and supported by the current Android Auto version.
Exact examples you can say
These examples illustrate the command structure. Replace the names and wording with your own details:
Reply to Priya, then:I’m leaving now and should arrive in twenty minutes.Reply to Jordan, then:Yes, please bring the documents.Message Taylor on WhatsApp, then:Can we move the meeting to tomorrow morning?Send a text to 555 010 1234, then dictate the message when prompted.
Wait for the confirmation read-back after every custom dictation. If a number, name, or time is important, say it slowly and verify how the assistant repeats it.

Troubleshoot voice activation
The assistant does not start
- Hold the steering-wheel voice button until the listening tone, rather than tapping it briefly.
- If you used “Hey Google,” try the display microphone or the wheel button to determine whether the issue is wake-word recognition or the Android Auto connection.
- Confirm that Android Auto is actually connected and visible on the vehicle display.
You spoke before the tone
Wait for the tone or listening indicator before saying the command. Words spoken during the button’s startup period may be ignored or sent to the vehicle’s native voice system. Press and hold again, wait, and then say the full command.
Background noise causes errors
Reduce unnecessary cabin noise, close a window if practical, and speak toward the vehicle microphone at a normal pace. Google specifically recommends reducing surrounding noise when voice commands fail. Do not shout; excessive volume can distort speech just as easily as a quiet voice.
An aftermarket receiver cannot hear you
Check whether the receiver’s microphone is connected and working. Google recommends checking the microphone on an aftermarket receiver when voice activation does not work. Inspect the microphone connection and placement according to the receiver’s own documentation, but do not attempt adjustments that require handling equipment while driving.
The wrong assistant or vehicle system opens
Hold the steering-wheel button until the Android Auto listening tone. A short press can invoke the car’s built-in assistant. If the display microphone opens a different interface, end the attempt and reconnect Android Auto when safely parked before changing vehicle or phone settings.
The message app or contact is not found
- Check that the app is installed, signed in, and allowed to display notifications.
- Use the contact’s full or distinctive name if several entries are similar.
- For an app-specific request, include the app name, such as
on WhatsApp. - If Android Auto offers no reply control for that app, use a supported messaging app or the SMS option available on your setup rather than repeatedly issuing the same command.
The transcription is wrong
Use the assistant’s correction or edit option if it is offered, then wait for another read-back. For names and numbers, dictate more slowly and spell an unusual name when necessary. Never confirm a message you have not heard accurately.
What Android Auto blocks while driving
Android Auto applies safety lockouts to some interactions. Google specifically lists typing messages while the vehicle is moving as an example. A screen keyboard or an unavailable button is therefore not necessarily a malfunction. The safe path is to use the microphone, steering-wheel control, or a suggested reply that Android Auto presents without typing.
Voice control still requires attention. Keep your eyes on traffic, avoid navigating through several screens, and pull over before changing permissions, reconnecting hardware, or troubleshooting a receiver. If a command requires repeated clarification, stop trying to send it until the vehicle is parked.
Gemini and Google Assistant: which name should you use?
Google says Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices and that the transition continues through 2026. Android Auto may therefore show Gemini on one phone or account and Google Assistant on another. The hands-free sequence remains the same: activate listening, identify the recipient, dictate, hear the read-back, and confirm.
Use the assistant name and buttons displayed by your current Android Auto session. Do not assume that every user has already been moved to Gemini or that every Gemini feature is available in every region, account, vehicle, or app. If the interface says Google Assistant, follow its prompts; if it says Gemini, follow the Gemini prompts and any edit option shown.
A reliable routine for every message
- Connect Android Auto before the trip and make sure the expected messaging app is available.
- When a message arrives, decide whether a suggested reply is sufficient.
- For a custom response, activate listening with “Hey Google,” the display microphone, or the held steering-wheel button.
- Say
Reply to [contact name], or identify the app when starting a new message. - Dictate the response in one natural sentence or several clearly spoken sentences.
- Listen to the complete read-back, paying particular attention to names, times, addresses, and numbers.
- Say send only when the wording is correct; otherwise cancel or ask for a revision.
This routine avoids screen typing, makes the recipient explicit, and inserts a confirmation point before transmission. If the vehicle, app, or assistant behaves differently, rely on the controls it presents and complete setup changes only while parked.
