Secure a home router in this order: replace the default administrator credentials, change the default Wi‑Fi name and password, disable internet-side remote management (and, where practical, WPS and UPnP), install the latest firmware, and select WPA3 Personal. Use WPA2 Personal if WPA3 is unavailable. If an updated router still offers only obsolete WPA or WEP security, plan to replace it with a WPA3-capable router.
The exact screens differ by manufacturer, model, firmware and internet provider. Identify the router first and follow its current instructions rather than guessing at a menu path.

What you need before changing anything
Find the router’s manufacturer and model number. It may be printed on the unit, its label, the original documentation or your internet provider’s equipment page. You need the model-specific instructions for two jobs: changing the administrator login and changing the wireless network credentials. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends searching for instructions such as “how to change [your router manufacturer] admin password” and “how to change [your router manufacturer] Wi‑Fi network password.” If the equipment came from your ISP, the ISP may provide the instructions or manage updates for you.

| Credential | What it controls | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Router administrator login | Access to configuration pages, updates, firewall options and network settings | Replace the default administrator username and password with unique values, if the interface permits changing both |
| Wi‑Fi network password | Allows phones, computers, televisions and other devices to join the wireless network | Replace the default wireless password and network name with unique values |
A device joining Wi‑Fi does not automatically gain the router’s administrator privileges. Protecting both credentials closes different paths into the network.
1. Change the router administrator credentials
Open the model-specific administration instructions
Use the manufacturer’s documentation or your ISP’s support instructions to reach the router’s administration interface. The address, app, login name and menu labels vary, so a path that works on one model may not exist on another. If the default login fails, check the equipment label and the provider’s documentation instead of repeatedly guessing credentials.
Replace the default username and password
- Sign in with the current administrator credentials.
- Open the account, administration, system or management section identified in the model’s instructions.
- Change the default administrative username if the router offers that option.
- Set a unique administrator password that is not reused elsewhere.
- Avoid names, addresses, household details and the router brand in the username or password.
- Save or apply the change, then sign in again with the new credentials to confirm that it worked.
The administrator password protects the settings themselves. A person who obtains it can alter wireless security, update settings or expose management controls, so do not use the same value as the Wi‑Fi password. Store the new credential in a secure place that household administrators can access when needed.

Some interfaces allow only the administrator password to be changed. In that case, set the strongest unique password the interface supports and follow the manufacturer’s current security guidance. Do not leave a factory password in place merely because the default username is fixed.

2. Change the Wi‑Fi name and password
Replace the default network identity
Open the wireless, Wi‑Fi or WLAN settings in the model-specific instructions. Change the default network name (SSID) and wireless password. The FTC advises avoiding identifying details such as a street address, a person’s name or the router brand in the network name or login information. A neutral name makes it harder for a passerby to infer who owns the network or which equipment is installed.
Reconnect every device deliberately
- Save the new network name and password.
- Wait for the router to restart its wireless service, if it does so.
- On each phone, computer, smart-home device and television, select the new network name.
- Enter the new Wi‑Fi password and confirm that the device receives an internet connection.
- Remove or forget the old saved network on devices that continue trying to connect to it.
Changing the Wi‑Fi password disconnects devices that were using the old one. That is expected and also provides a useful way to remove devices that should no longer have access.
3. Disable internet-side remote management
Why this setting matters
Remote management allows router settings to be changed over the internet rather than only from the home network. That convenience also exposes an administrative control surface outside the house. The FTC recommends turning remote management off. CISA guidance likewise recommends disabling remotely accessible management interfaces when possible.

- In the router’s administration interface, open the section named remote management, remote administration, WAN management or a similar term.
- Set the feature to disabled or off.
- Save or apply the change and wait for the router to finish restarting, if required.
- Sign out of the administrator interface and reopen the settings from a device on the home network to confirm that local administration still works.
Labels differ by model, and a provider-managed router may place this control in an ISP app or hide it from customers. If you depend on remote administration, read the manufacturer’s security instructions before changing it and understand the convenience-versus-exposure trade-off. Do not assume that an app used inside the home is the same thing as internet-side remote management; check what the documentation says the toggle controls.

Disable WPS and UPnP when practical
The FTC recommends turning off WPS and UPnP along with remote management. WPS is a convenience feature for joining wireless devices, while UPnP lets devices request network configuration automatically. If you do not need either feature, disable it in the wireless or advanced-network settings, save the change and reconnect devices only through the normal Wi‑Fi process. If a device depends on one of these features, check its documentation and decide whether the convenience is worth keeping before leaving it enabled.
4. Update the router software
Check the manufacturer or ISP update path
Router firmware fixes defects and can add support for newer security modes. Open the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and review the update instructions. ISP-supplied routers may update automatically; check the provider’s documentation or app rather than assuming that an update was installed.
- Record the model and current firmware version shown in the administration interface, if available.
- Check the manufacturer’s or ISP’s current update instructions for that model.
- Install the update using the documented method. Do not interrupt power during the update.
- Wait for the router to restart fully, then sign in and confirm that the firmware version changed or that the interface reports current software.
- Recheck the administrator, remote-management and wireless-security settings after the update, because some updates can restore defaults or reorganize menus.
The FTC’s consumer guidance is dated December 2022, so it does not establish the current support status of any particular router in 2026. The manufacturer or ISP is the authority for whether a model still receives updates and which firmware it should run.
5. Select WPA3 Personal, or WPA2 Personal when necessary
Understand the two current choices
| Wireless security mode | Use it when | What the FTC guidance says |
|---|---|---|
| WPA3 Personal | The router and the household’s devices support it | It is the newer and best encryption option discussed by the FTC |
| WPA2 Personal | WPA3 is unavailable but the router supports WPA2 | It is the FTC’s stated alternative and still scrambles wireless information |
| WPA or WEP | Only as a temporary indication that the equipment is obsolete | The FTC identifies these older modes as outdated and not secure |
Set the wireless security mode
- Open the wireless-security or Wi‑Fi settings.
- Choose WPA3 Personal if it is listed.
- If WPA3 is not listed, install the latest firmware first and check again.
- If the updated router does not offer WPA3, choose WPA2 Personal.
- Save the setting and reconnect devices using the Wi‑Fi password you set in the previous step.
The FTC summarizes the choice this way: “WPA3 is the newer — and best — encryption available, but both will work to scramble your information.” Here, “both” refers to WPA3 Personal and WPA2 Personal in the FTC’s consumer guidance. Do not mistake an enterprise mode, an unencrypted option or a setting labeled only WPA/WPA2 for the Personal modes described above unless the manufacturer’s documentation clearly explains the difference.

Older router? No WPA3 or WPA2 options?
Do not decide that a router is unreplaceable merely because WPA3 is absent. Update its software and check the settings again. If the updated router still offers only WPA or WEP, the security limitation is fundamental for that equipment; consider replacing it with a router that supports WPA3-capable Wi‑Fi. Replacement is a fallback after checking updates, not a requirement for every home.

Log out and confirm the firewall
After saving changes, log out of the administrator interface rather than leaving an authenticated session open. Check that the router firewall is enabled. The exact label may be firewall, network firewall or security protection; use the model’s instructions and do not change advanced firewall rules without understanding their effect.
Create a guest network for visitors
A guest network can give visitors internet access with a separate password instead of sharing the primary wireless credential. Enable it only if the router supports it and the model’s instructions explain how guest isolation works. Set a guest password different from both the administrator password and the main Wi‑Fi password. Review whether the guest network can reach local devices; the router’s documentation should describe that behavior.
Keep a recovery record
Record the model number, the date of the firmware update and where the new administrator and Wi‑Fi credentials are stored. Do not write passwords in a place visible to visitors. If the router offers a configuration backup, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and protect that backup like a password because it may contain network settings.

Troubleshooting common problems
You cannot find the administration page
- Confirm the manufacturer and exact model from the label.
- Use the manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions for that model; generic addresses and menu paths are not universal.
- Connect to the home network and temporarily disable a separate VPN or network connection that could route you away from the router’s local interface.
- If the equipment is managed by an ISP, use the provider’s app or support channel.
The new Wi‑Fi password appears not to work
- Confirm that you are selecting the new network name, not a similarly named neighboring network.
- Re-enter the password exactly as saved, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Forget the old saved network on the device, then join again.
- Reconnect one device first and verify internet access before changing additional settings.
Devices disconnect after switching to WPA3
Some older devices may not support WPA3. Check the router’s compatibility instructions and the device manufacturer’s documentation. If the router provides a documented transition or compatibility mode, understand what security mode it actually uses before selecting it. If WPA3 is not practical for the household’s devices, WPA2 Personal is the FTC’s stated alternative; do not fall back to WPA or WEP simply to make an old device connect.
The remote-management switch is missing
Look under advanced, WAN, administration or security settings, using the exact model instructions. An ISP-managed router may control the option centrally. Ask the provider whether internet-side administration is enabled and how to disable it. If the provider cannot disable it, follow its current security guidance and keep firmware updates enabled.
The update fails or the router becomes unresponsive
Do not repeatedly interrupt power during an update. Follow the manufacturer’s recovery procedure for the exact model and contact the manufacturer or ISP if the documented recovery does not work. A factory reset may erase the administrator and Wi‑Fi changes, so treat it as a last resort and be prepared to repeat the secure setup from the beginning.

Verification checklist
Use this checklist after the router restarts:
- The default administrator password has been replaced, and the username has also been changed if the router permits it.
- The administrator credential is different from the Wi‑Fi credential and does not contain a name, address or router brand.
- The default Wi‑Fi network name and password have been replaced.
- Internet-side remote management is disabled, or the ISP has documented why it cannot be disabled.
- WPS and UPnP are disabled unless a specific household need justifies leaving them on.
- The router is running the current firmware supplied by its manufacturer or ISP.
- Wireless security is WPA3 Personal, or WPA2 Personal when WPA3 is unavailable.
- WPA and WEP are not being used as the selected security mode.
- The router firewall is on.
- You logged out of the administrator interface.
- A guest network, if enabled, has its own password and the documented isolation behavior is understood.
How often to revisit the settings
Recheck the manufacturer’s or ISP’s update information when you receive a firmware notice, replace networking equipment or notice a security setting has changed. Review who knows the Wi‑Fi password after guests, tenants or service providers no longer need access, and change it when appropriate. Whenever you change wireless security or the network name, reconnect devices deliberately and confirm that the administrator login still works.
The secure baseline
A properly secured home router has unique administrator and Wi‑Fi credentials, no unnecessary internet-side management, current firmware, WPA3 Personal whenever the equipment supports it, and WPA2 Personal when it does not. If an updated router cannot provide either WPA3 or WPA2 and remains limited to WPA or WEP, replacement is the responsible next step.
