How to Replace the Power Button on a Samsung Galaxy S6

The standard Galaxy S6 power-button cable is accessed through the rear glass. Identify the right part, prepare replacement adhesive, and handle the spring contacts carefully.

Replacing the power button on the standard Samsung Galaxy S6 means opening the phone from the back: remove the SIM tray, heat and lift the rear glass, then disconnect the internal power-button cable. The rear-glass adhesive is destroyed during removal, so have replacement adhesive ready. This is a delicate repair, especially when releasing the cable’s spring contacts.

Identify the part before you start

The Galaxy S6 power button has an external cover and an internal switch-and-contact cable. If the outer cover is missing or damaged, the part you need is different from the internal switch cable. The iFixit Galaxy S6 Power Button Replacement guide identifies the internal replacement as the Galaxy S6 Power Button Cable; its external cover is not included. The separately listed Galaxy S6 Power and Volume Buttons are the outer covers, not the switch assembly.

Check that the part is for the standard Galaxy S6, not the Galaxy S6 Edge or another variant, and confirm whether the failure is in the cover or internal cable before ordering. The phone must be opened from the rear for the cable repair.

Tools and preparation

The iFixit guide lists a suction handle, SIM card eject tool, opening picks, an iOpener, a Phillips #00 screwdriver, and tweezers. It also directs readers to have a spudger available for releasing the spring contacts. You will need replacement rear-glass adhesive for reassembly: as the guide states, “Removing the rear glass destroys the adhesive holding it in place.”

  • Work on a clean, stable surface and keep removed screws organized.
  • Use controlled heat to soften the rear-cover adhesive; avoid concentrating heat in one spot.
  • Plan to stop if the glass begins to crack or you cannot lift it without increasing force. A repair professional is a sensible option if you lack suitable tools or experience with fragile glass and flex cables.

Replace the internal power-button cable

  1. Remove the SIM tray. Use the SIM eject tool to eject and remove the tray before opening the phone.
  2. Soften the rear-glass adhesive. Apply heat as directed in the model-specific guide, then use a suction handle and opening picks to create and carefully widen a gap around the rear glass. Work gradually; the adhesive is strong and the glass can break.
  3. Lift off the rear glass. Once the adhesive has been separated, remove the cover. The original adhesive will not hold the glass in place again.
  4. Open the phone and expose the midframe. Follow the guide’s screw-removal and opening sequence to reach the power-button bracket and cable. Keep track of each screw and its position.
  5. Remove the power-button bracket. Lift the bracket carefully. The cable remains attached to the midframe, so do not pull the cable assembly upward with the bracket.
  6. Release the cable contacts. The spring-contact adhesive is stronger than the cable. Slide a spudger beneath the contact points to release them, rather than tugging on the flex cable; pulling hard can tear it.
  7. Install the replacement cable and reassemble. Position the replacement cable and contacts, then reassemble the phone in reverse order. Install replacement rear-glass adhesive before refitting the glass, following the guide’s separate rear-glass adhesive instructions.

Risks and repair difficulty

The main access hazard is breaking the rear glass while separating its strong adhesive. Inside, the power-button cable is easy to damage if pulled before its spring contacts are released. These are not cosmetic cautions: a cracked cover or torn flex cable can turn a button repair into additional parts and work.

iFixit’s 2015 Galaxy S6 teardown assigns the phone a repairability score of 4 out of 10, with 10 described as easiest to repair. The teardown notes that many components can be replaced independently, but strong rear-glass adhesive makes opening difficult. That score describes repairability, not the likelihood that an individual repair will succeed.
