The best privacy-focused alternative depends on the job: use a content blocker for ads and unwanted page elements, a tracker blocker for third-party tracking, and a password manager for credentials. They are not interchangeable. Start by checking what your browser already blocks, then add only an extension that fills a real gap.
Which kind of extension do you need?
“Popular browser extensions” covers many different tasks, so there is no single replacement list that fits everyone. These options address the main privacy-related jobs: broad content blocking, behavior-based tracker blocking, browser-native protections, and password management.

- Content blocking: filters ads, trackers, and other page content using rules and filter lists.
- Behavior-based tracker blocking: identifies and blocks third-party trackers based on observed behavior.
- Password management: saves and autofills credentials; it does not replace a blocker.
What are the best options for content blocking?
Firefox: uBlock Origin
The uBlock Origin project describes its full extension as a wide-spectrum blocker designed to use CPU and memory efficiently. Its default lists include EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Peter Lowe’s Blocklist, an online malicious URL blocklist, and uBlock Origin’s own filter lists. You can add lists and custom rules. Privacy Guides says it works best on Firefox, while cautioning that extra filter lists can affect performance and may increase the attack surface. See the uBlock Origin project repository and Privacy Guides’ browser extensions recommendations.

Chrome: uBlock Origin Lite
Do not treat uBlock Origin Lite as identical to full uBlock Origin. Privacy Guides describes Lite as the Manifest V3-compatible option, with fewer capabilities: it lacks advanced features such as dynamic filtering and the network logger, faces Manifest V3’s rule limit, and generally cannot fetch remote resources. Its basic mode works without special site-content permissions; higher modes request broader access. It can be a practical Chrome choice if those tradeoffs suit you.

Is Privacy Badger an ad blocker?
Not in the broad sense. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) says Privacy Badger learns to block third-party trackers by analyzing observed behavior instead of relying only on a human-curated list. It also sends Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track signals. That behavior-based approach may identify trackers missing from conventional lists, but Privacy Badger does not block ads simply because they are ads: for example, EFF says it will not block YouTube ads merely because you visit YouTube directly. EFF says it may still learn about trackers that are absent from Firefox’s human-generated lists, so whether it adds value depends on your setup rather than being mandatory or universally redundant. EFF says Chrome on Android does not support extensions and points Android users to Firefox for Android; its documentation describes Safari support as in progress, so confirm compatibility before choosing it for Safari. What changed with Manifest V3?
Manifest V3 affects how extensions can filter web requests. In its February 25, 2025 article, Mozilla explained that Google’s move from blockingWebRequest to declarativeNetRequest limits how extensions can filter content. Mozilla said Firefox would continue supporting both Manifest V2 and Manifest V3. That is Mozilla’s description of its own browser approach, not a comparative performance test. Mozilla’s Firefox Blog explanation of Manifest V3
The practical choice supported by these sources is browser-specific: consider full uBlock Origin on Firefox, or uBlock Origin Lite on Chrome if its reduced feature set works for you. Check current store and project status before installing because extension availability and permissions can change.

Should you install another blocker if your browser already has one?
Check built-in protections before adding an extension. Privacy Guides advises against installing extensions without an immediate need or when they duplicate browser functionality; it cites Brave Shields as already providing functionality similar to uBlock Origin. Compare what your browser currently blocks with the specific gap you want to address, rather than stacking overlapping tools by default. Privacy Guides’ browser extensions recommendations
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs Privacy Badger compatible with other extensions, including ad blockers?
EFF describes overlap between Privacy Badger and browser protections or other blocker lists, but also says Privacy Badger can learn trackers absent from Firefox’s human-generated lists. That supports a conditional choice, not a blanket claim that it always complements or always duplicates another blocker. Check the browser’s protections and your existing extensions against the tracker-blocking job you still need done. EFF Privacy Badger documentation

Where does a password manager fit?
A password manager addresses credential storage and autofill, not advertising or tracker filtering. Bitwarden’s Manifest V3 article describes its browser extension as the interface for saving and autofilling login credentials; it does not make Bitwarden a content blocker. Choose it only if you need password-management features. Bitwarden’s Manifest V3 article
