If the piece was missing from a new purchase, contact the retailer or follow the publisher’s instructions before buying anything. For an older or second-hand game, try a donor copy or marketplace next; use a generic token only if it fits and does not change how the game plays.
Identify the exact game and missing component
Do not search by title alone. Record the full game name, publisher, language, edition or printing if known, and approximate publication era. Compare the rulebook’s contents list with the pieces you have. Editions can use components with similar names but different shapes, sizes, colors, or artwork.

Note the component’s name, quantity, color, dimensions if available, and role in play. A common cube is easier to substitute than a card with unique printed information or a distinctive board section.
Was the piece missing from a new purchase?
If a new copy arrived incomplete or damaged, start with the retailer’s current return or exchange process, and check the publisher’s instructions for your country. Keep the receipt or other proof of purchase, packaging, and any photographs the retailer or publisher requests.

For eligible new games in the United States and Canada, it directs customers to the retailer first, with customer-service or distributor routes if an exchange is unavailable; instructions differ for the UK and other countries. Asmodee USA says many retail purchases should be handled through the retailer, while direct purchases follow a separate contact process. For direct purchases, its FAQ says requests must be submitted within six months of shipment or purchase and include images and a clear description. For a piece lost after purchase, check the publisher first
Look for the game’s official support page or parts store, and ask whether the exact component is available for your edition. Stock, shipping, eligibility, and whether a component is sold individually or as a set can vary.

If the publisher cannot supply it, look for a matching donor part
For older, out-of-print, or unsupported games, check local used-game shops, board-game marketplaces, and parts-exchange listings. CATAN’s service guidance names local stores carrying used games and BoardGameGeek Geekmarket as possible sources. A component from a donor copy may match more closely than a generic piece, but ask the seller to confirm the edition and condition before paying.

When a generic substitute will work
Generic meeples, cubes, discs, gems, dice, or tokens can be practical substitutes when an exact part is unavailable and the game’s information remains clear. The BoardGameGeek Store’s game-pieces catalog shows examples of generic components, but a listing there does not establish compatibility with a particular game.

- Match dimensions and shape closely enough for the component’s job, including stacking or fitting on a board space.
- Choose a color that players can distinguish from the other pieces in the game, especially in the lighting where you play.
- Buy the right quantity and material for the intended use.
- Check that the substitute does not provide hidden information, signal a different value, or otherwise alter play.
A generic token is usually a poor solution for a unique printed card, a board section, or a highly distinctive piece whose appearance conveys game information. For those, continue looking for an official part or a donor copy.

The best route depends on the part’s exactness, functional fit, geographic availability, total cost, condition, and importance to play. A publisher may be the sensible first contact for a newly purchased defective copy; a used listing or generic piece may be more practical for a part lost from an older game. None of these routes guarantees that a specific part is in stock or free.
Check the policy for your country and purchase type
Policies are not universal. Asmodee USA’s current FAQ says its replacement service does not cover second-hand purchases, and it explains that maintaining an independent stock of elements for every game and expansion became unsustainable. That is a US-specific example, not a rule that applies to every publisher. CATAN’s service information also varies by country and distinguishes new-game omissions from pieces lost through use. Confirm the current, game-specific instructions before relying on an exchange or ordering a part.
