You can replace Google apps on Android safely, but not with one uninstall. Treat the change as a staged migration: inventory each app’s data, make and inspect a fresh backup, export anything that has a portable format, install and test the destination app, and only then disable synchronization or remove the Google Account. Android backup and phone-to-phone transfer are useful safety nets, not complete archives; app support, Android version, and phone model determine what actually survives.
What “without losing data” really requires
Information connected with a Google app can exist in three different places. Cloud data belongs to your Google Account; local data exists only on the handset; and app-specific data or preferences may be stored in a way that Android cannot export or restore. A replacement app can receive only what you can copy, export, or import into it.

| Where the data lives | Typical examples | What can go wrong | Safe action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Account | Email, cloud contacts, calendar, photos, documents and other synchronized content | Removing the account from the phone removes its associated data from that device; an export may not include changes made while it is being prepared | Export or copy the required categories, download the archive, and verify the destination before account removal |
| Phone storage | Downloads, locally created files, photos in device folders, unsynced contacts and messages | Setup transfer and backup exclude some folders and file types | Copy local files separately and check the destination storage |
| App-specific storage | Preferences, offline databases, message history, bookmarks, saved views or game progress | Android may back up an app but not all of its data or settings; a replacement may use a different format | Read the destination app’s import instructions and verify critical records manually |
Google says Android backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS, but it also states that not every app backs up or restores all data and settings. Check the backup details and treat every important category as a separate migration task. Android backup and restore guidance explains the limits.
Start with an inventory, not an uninstall
Write down the Google apps you intend to replace and the exact information you still need. “My data” is too broad to use as a test; a checklist lets you prove that each category arrived.

- Mail: messages, attachments, folders or labels, drafts and contacts used for addressing.
- Contacts: Google contacts, device-only contacts, SIM contacts, groups, photos, notes and recent edits.
- Calendar: events, recurring rules, reminders, invite status, shared calendars and time-zone behavior.
- Photos and video: originals, edits, albums, favorites, metadata and files that are still only on the phone.
- Files: documents in cloud storage, Downloads, recordings, PDFs and files inside app-specific folders.
- Browser information: bookmarks, history, open tabs, saved passwords and autofill details. Confirm separately whether the destination supports each item.
- Messages and call history: SMS/MMS, RCS conversations where applicable, voicemail and call records.
- Settings: notification rules, home-screen layout, wallpaper, accessibility choices, accounts and app preferences.
Mark each line as cloud-synchronized, local only, or app-specific. The classification determines whether you should use an account export, a file copy, an Android backup, or an in-app export. Do not assume that a single backup covers all three.
Make and inspect a fresh Android backup
Before changing accounts or devices, create the newest backup available and review what it contains. On current Android documentation, the general route is:
- Open Settings.
- Open Google services, then All services.
- Tap Backup.
- Open Backup details and read the categories and date shown.
- Use Back up now when that control is available, then wait for completion.
Manufacturers and Android versions can rename or relocate these controls. Use the Settings search field for “backup” if the labels differ. The backup may cover apps and some app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS. Google notes that RCS messages, Phone app settings, and photos or videos depend on the particular Google apps and services being used, and that app support is variable. The official backup page lists the current categories and restrictions.

It is designed to restore to an Android device, and restoring a backup from a newer Android version onto an older version can be incomplete. Keep your inventory and exports even after the backup succeeds.
If you are changing phones, use setup transfer as a second safety net
Android’s setup process can copy content from an old phone by cable or Wi-Fi. Google recommends a cable when possible. Use a data-capable cable that fits both phones and supports their ports; not every USB cable carries data. Transfer time can range from minutes to hours depending on the amount of content and the devices.

- Charge both phones and connect them, or place them on the same Wi-Fi network when the setup wizard offers wireless transfer.
- On the new phone, choose the option to copy apps and data from an old Android device.
- Follow the on-screen authentication and selection prompts. Keep both phones powered and nearby until the wizard reports completion.
- After setup, open the copied apps and compare the result with your inventory rather than assuming that the transfer was complete.
| Commonly listed as transferable | Explicit exclusions or variable items |
|---|---|
| Apps and certain app data, music, photos, videos, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, text messages, many settings, wallpaper and call history | Downloads such as PDFs, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup, accounts other than Google Accounts and their data, contacts or calendars synchronized to non-Google services, ringtones and some settings |
The exact offer depends on the two phones and their Android versions. Google’s transfer instructions document the categories and exclusions. Copy omitted files manually from the old phone before wiping it.
Export account data with Google Takeout
Use an account export when you need a copy that is independent of the phone’s restore process. Takeout lets the account owner select data such as email, documents, calendar and photos. It creates an archive for download; downloading it does not delete the account’s server-side data.
- Open Google’s data-download instructions and start a Takeout export.
- Select only the services and data categories in your inventory. Narrow exports are easier to inspect than one very large archive.
- Choose the archive format and delivery method offered, then create the export.
- Download the completed archive to a computer or other storage with enough free space. Google recommends inspecting Takeout archives on a desktop computer.
- Open representative files and check dates, attachments, folder structure and metadata before treating the export as a verified backup.
Takeout’s formats carry important details. Contacts are exported as vCard. Gmail messages retain labels in an X-Gmail-Labels header. Google also warns that changes made after the export request but before the archive is created might not appear in that archive, so make final edits before starting or run another export afterward.
An archive is not a promise that your chosen replacement can import every item or preserve app behavior. Check the destination service’s current import documentation for the exact file format, limits and supported metadata before deleting anything.
Handle contacts as a separate migration
Contacts are easy to misjudge because some can be synchronized with the Google Account while others live on the phone or SIM. Export an independent VCF copy before changing synchronization.

- Tap Fix & manage, then Export to file.
- Choose the account or accounts to include and export to a
.VCFfile. - Store the VCF somewhere outside the phone and import it using the destination app’s documented contact-import command.
Before turning off Google Contacts synchronization, allow pending edits to finish synchronizing. Google warns that disabling sync removes the synchronized contacts from the device and that unsynchronized device changes can be lost. The two relevant procedures are exporting contacts and managing Google Contacts synchronization.

After importing, compare a sample from every group: a contact with a photo, one with multiple phone numbers, one with notes and one recently edited. Check for duplicate records and confirm that new contacts are being saved to the account or storage you actually intend to use.
Choose a replacement by import and recovery behavior
There is no universal substitute that receives every Google category with its original settings. Evaluate a candidate app or service against the data in your inventory rather than choosing by name alone.
| Question to ask | Why it matters | Evidence to verify before switching |
|---|---|---|
| Which formats does it import? | VCF, email archives, calendar files and photo exports are not interchangeable | Current provider documentation naming the exact file type, size limits and supported fields |
| Does it synchronize across your devices? | A local-only app may leave the data stranded on one handset | Account model, supported platforms and a test sync on a second device |
| Do metadata and settings survive? | Messages may transfer while labels, reminders, album membership or notification rules do not | An import report and a manual comparison of representative records |
| What works offline? | You may need files, contacts or calendars without a connection | Documented offline behavior and what is cached locally |
| Is an account or subscription required? | Removing one account can simply replace it with another dependency | Sign-in, storage quotas, export rights and renewal terms |
| How are privacy and security handled? | Moving data changes who stores it and how it is protected | Encryption claims, authentication controls, retention and deletion procedures |
Install the replacement while the original data is still available. Import a small, representative sample first, then the complete export if the sample is correct. Keep the original account and old phone untouched until the destination passes your verification checklist.
Verify every destination before disabling sync
Verification should be observable, not a feeling that “the app opened.” Use the following checks for each category you marked as important:

- Contacts: compare total counts, groups, photos, notes, multiple numbers and the newest edits; create a harmless test contact and confirm where it saves.
- Calendar: inspect a recurring event, an invitation, a reminder and an event in a different time zone.
- Photos and videos: open originals from different dates, check metadata and confirm that albums or favorites you require exist.
- Files: open a PDF, document, recording and downloaded file from their intended folders.
- Messages and calls: check older conversations and call records that the destination claims to support.
- Settings: test notifications, search, offline access, widgets and any accessibility feature you rely on.
Repeat the test after signing out and back in, or after a second device synchronizes. A destination that displays an imported file once but cannot sync or reopen it is not yet a safe replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Disable synchronization only after the destination is ready
Switching off one sync category and removing the entire account are different actions. Make the smallest change that meets your goal.
- Confirm that the destination app contains the records and settings you need, and that your exports open from independent storage.
- For contacts, synchronize outstanding edits before disabling Google Contacts sync. Expect synchronized contacts to disappear from the device when sync is turned off.
- Turn off only the Google service synchronization you no longer want, if you are keeping other services on the account.
- Use the phone’s account settings to remove the Google Account only when you have checked every associated category. Android’s account instructions state that removing an account removes its associated email, contacts and settings from that device.
- Restart the phone and test the replacement apps, offline files and notifications. Keep the export archive and old device until this final test succeeds.
Removing an account from Android is a device-level action; it does not by itself delete the account’s server-side data. Takeout’s documentation separately states that downloading data does not delete it from Google’s servers. Android’s account-removal guidance explains the on-device effect.
Recover from common migration failures
The app is present but its data is missing
Android may have restored the application package without restoring all of its database or preferences. Check the app’s own backup or export feature, restore from the original account while it is still available, and import a documented file format into the replacement. Do not uninstall the old app until you have confirmed that the data is either visible in the original service or stored in an export.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsContacts vanished after sync was disabled
Re-enable the account’s contact synchronization and allow it to complete. If you made edits while synchronization was pending, those edits may not be recoverable from the account; use the VCF export or another copy if available. Import the verified VCF into the destination before trying the switch again.

A new phone has fewer items than the old phone
Compare the missing items with the documented transfer exclusions: Downloads, hidden-folder media, non-Play apps, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google account data, non-Google contacts or calendars, ringtones and some settings may not copy. Manually copy local files and reinstall unsupported apps from their legitimate sources, then restore their data using the app’s instructions.
Restoration is incomplete after changing Android versions
Google warns that restoring a backup made on a newer Android version to an older version can be incomplete. If possible, update the receiving phone before restoring. Otherwise, rely on independent exports and manual copies for categories that the restore did not bring back.
The Takeout archive lacks the latest changes
Takeout archives can omit changes made after the export request while Google is preparing the archive. Make the final edits, run a new export and compare the archive’s newest timestamps with the source account. Keep both archives until the destination has been checked.
The cable transfer will not start
Confirm that the cable supports data, that both connectors fit the specific phones and that each phone is unlocked. Try the wireless setup option if it is offered. If neither method works, use the Android backup plus independent account exports and manual file copying rather than repeatedly resetting the old phone.
When a full replacement is unnecessary
You do not have to remove every Google app to reduce dependence on Google services. A partial migration can be safer: replace one category, verify it, and leave the account or other apps in place for categories that lack a reliable export. This approach limits the amount of data being moved at once and lets you identify an import problem before it affects mail, contacts, photos and files together.
For a complete change, keep three independent safeguards until the end: the original account still accessible, a readable export archive, and a copy of local files. Once the replacement has passed your inventory checks on the device you will use day to day, you can remove synchronization or the account with a clear understanding of what will disappear from that handset.
