Turn the remote over, identify how its battery cover opens, then install the replacement batteries following the polarity marks inside the compartment. Sony remotes use several cover designs, and there is no single battery size that fits every model.
Before you begin: check the remote and its battery markings
Look at the back of the remote before trying to open it. Sony uses different battery-cover mechanisms, so do not assume the cover slides or pry at it. If the remote has a built-in rechargeable battery, Sony says its battery cannot be replaced; the steps below are for remotes with a replaceable battery compartment.

Once you open the compartment, check its diagram for the required battery size and polarity. Sony’s general guidance does not specify one size for all TV remotes. Follow the remote’s own markings or its model-specific manual rather than guessing.

Use the method that matches the cover on your remote. If you cannot get a firm grip, Sony suggests trying rubber or anti-slip gloves.

Slide-and-peel cover
Find the triangle marking at the top of the cover and point it upward. Place your thumbs near the underside, slide the cover in the direction shown by the triangle until it loosens, then lift it off. Sony notes that this cover can be difficult to slide the first time.
Slider cover
Slide part or all of the back cover in the direction indicated on the remote. A triangle may mark the direction.

Clip-and-tilt lid
Locate the defined battery lid and release its small clip to remove the cover.
Button-release cover
Press the button on the underside of the remote to release the back cover.

Remove and install the batteries

Take out the old batteries and check the size and polarity diagram in the compartment.

Insert the replacements of the specified size and type. Match the plus (+) and minus (−) ends to the markings; Sony instructs users to start with the negative (−) pole.

Close the cover, then test the remote.
Sony says alkaline batteries are acceptable and generally recommends manganese batteries. For remotes with a microphone button or touchpad, Sony recommends long-life alkaline batteries for reliable Bluetooth communication. Follow guidance for your particular remote, and do not mix new and used batteries or different battery types. Sony also advises removing depleted batteries and taking batteries out if the remote will be unused for a long time, since batteries left inside can leak.
If battery fluid has leaked, clean the compartment thoroughly before inserting replacements. If fluid contacts skin, rinse thoroughly with water.

If the remote still does not work
Check the replacements
Try fresh batteries. If you are unsure whether the replacements work, test them in another compatible device.
Clean the battery terminals
If rolling the installed batteries makes the remote work, Sony identifies dirty terminals as a possible cause. Remove the batteries, clean the terminals with a small amount of alcohol on a cotton bud or soft cloth, then reinstall them.
