How to Replace a TP-Link Router Without Losing Your Wi-Fi Name and Password

Copy the old router’s exact Wi-Fi name and password to the new TP-Link router, then configure the ISP connection separately. Most devices reconnect automatically.

Set up the new router with the exact Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password used by the old one. Most Wi-Fi devices should then reconnect automatically, although some may need you to select the network and enter the password again. Internet access still needs to be configured separately: connect the modem to the new router’s WAN/Internet port and follow your ISP’s connection requirements.

Before you unplug the old router

  • Write down the exact Wi-Fi name and password. Match capitalization and spelling; the Wi-Fi password is case-sensitive. If your old router used separate names or passwords for different bands, record each one.
  • Check the network arrangement you want to preserve. Setup options vary by model. Some TP-Link routers let you configure 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz separately; Smart Connect can use one name for supported 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Match the old arrangement if you want devices to find the same network as before. TP-Link’s new-interface setup guide and wireless settings guide describe options that vary by model.
  • Keep the old router available until the new router has internet and you have checked important devices. If your ISP uses PPPoE and you do not know the login details, some supported TP-Link setup flows can retrieve them from the old router; availability depends on the model. See TP-Link’s PPPoE setup guidance.
  • Have the setup equipment ready: the new router and its power adapter, modem, a phone or computer, and an Ethernet cable. TP-Link says a cable is usually included. Confirm the modem has an internet connection before replacing the router, as advised in the router replacement guide.
  • Ask your ISP about required connection settings. Depending on the service, setup may require a connection type, PPPoE username and password, or VLAN ID. Do not guess these values; the ISP can confirm them.

Replace the router and copy the Wi-Fi settings

  1. Power off the modem. Disconnect the old router, then connect the modem’s Ethernet cable to the new router’s Internet or WAN port.
  2. Power the modem back on and wait for it to start. Then power on the new router and let it finish starting. TP-Link recommends this modem-first sequence in its replacement instructions.
  3. Connect your phone or computer to the new router, by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Open the TP-Link Tether app or enter tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1 in a browser’s address bar to reach the management page. You can access the local page while connected to the router even if the internet is not working yet. See TP-Link’s access instructions.
  4. Follow the setup wizard’s internet connection step. Check the detected connection type against your ISP’s instructions, and enter any required ISP credentials or VLAN details. If you are unsure what to enter, contact the ISP rather than guessing. The available setup menus depend on the router’s interface and model; TP-Link’s new-interface guide points owners of other interfaces to their applicable instructions.
  5. At the Wi-Fi settings step, enter the old network name and password exactly. If the wizard offers Use the Current Wi-Fi Settings, you can use it to keep the credentials already entered in that setup flow. Match the old band and network-name arrangement; enable Smart Connect only if you want supported bands to share a name. Options vary by model and region. See TP-Link’s setup guide and wireless settings guidance.
  6. Create or retain a separate router admin password for managing settings. This is not the Wi-Fi password. Newer models may ask you to create a local admin password during setup; TP-Link explains the distinction in its admin-password guidance.
  7. Save or apply the settings. If the router restarts, wait for it to come back online, then test internet access and check the devices you rely on most.

Why keeping the same Wi-Fi name usually works

Wi-Fi devices generally recognize a saved network by its SSID and password, not by the physical router broadcasting it. TP-Link says most devices reconnect automatically when both credentials are the same. Its replacement guide, dated August 27, 2026, also notes that some devices may still need manual reconnection: TP-Link’s replacement guide.

For the best chance of a seamless switch, preserve the exact spelling and capitalization of the name and password, as well as the band arrangement your devices used. A device that does not return on its own can be rejoined from its app or Wi-Fi settings.

Fix common setup problems

A device will not reconnect

Check that the new SSID and password match the old ones exactly, including capitalization. On the device, open its Wi-Fi controls or network-specific app, select the network, and enter the password again. TP-Link notes that manual reconnection can be necessary even when credentials are retained. See its replacement guidance and wireless settings guidance.

The router management page will not open

First connect the phone or computer to the new router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Then enter tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1 in the browser’s address bar. Use the router’s admin password—not the Wi-Fi password—if prompted. TP-Link’s access instructions explain how to reach the page.

The router has no internet connection

Confirm that the modem is connected to the new router’s WAN/Internet port, and check the required connection type and settings with your ISP. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guidance says an Internet IP address of 0.0.0.0 can indicate that the modem connection or physical setup needs checking. See TP-Link’s internet troubleshooting guide.

If you lack either value, contact the ISP. TP-Link covers connection options in its setup guide and documents a supported PPPoE retrieval flow in its PPPoE guidance.

Do not use a factory reset to transfer settings

A factory reset erases custom internet, Wi-Fi, and admin settings on the router being reset. It does not transfer those settings to the replacement. Configure the new router directly with the old Wi-Fi name and password instead. Reset only when you have a reason to clear settings on a router, and be prepared to set it up again. TP-Link explains the settings affected in its admin and reset guidance.
