In the United States, gene therapy eligibility depends on the exact genetic cause of retinal disease. The FDA-approved therapy LUXTURNA is indicated for people with confirmed biallelic RPE65 mutation-associated retinal dystrophy who also have viable retinal cells, as determined by their treating physician. It is not a treatment for inherited blindness in general.

“Retinal prosthetic goggles” usually refers to Argus II: glasses with a camera that formed part of a system requiring an implanted retinal device and external equipment. Argus II had narrow historical eligibility criteria, and its manufacturer says it is no longer available. The manufacturer describes Orion, a different type of visual prosthesis, as investigational and not FDA-approved. These pathways are not interchangeable.

Who may qualify for LUXTURNA gene therapy?

The FDA indication is for patients with confirmed biallelic RPE65 mutation-associated retinal dystrophy. Biallelic means that disease-causing variants have been identified in both copies of the RPE65 gene. A genetic result alone does not establish that someone is a candidate: the treating physician must also determine that viable retinal cells remain.

That distinction matters because the treatment targets a specific genetic cause of retinal disease, and the eye must have retinal tissue that can respond. Different inherited conditions can be associated with biallelic RPE65 variants, including LCA2 and RP20; the diagnosis name can vary even when the underlying gene association is the same. The FDA approval review discusses this variation.

The FDA labeling says treatment is not recommended for children younger than 12 months because retinal cells are still proliferating. Supporting pediatric studies included children ages 4 to under 12 and adolescents ages 12 to under 17. Those study ages are not a guarantee of eligibility for any individual; a specialist must assess the diagnosis, retinal condition, and other relevant factors.

What a candidacy assessment involves

A retinal specialist and genetics team can review the genetic test and eye examination together. Useful questions include whether testing confirmed two disease-causing RPE65 variants, how the laboratory interpreted them, and whether examination shows viable retinal cells. The team can explain how those findings affect candidacy and what treatment would involve in that patient’s case.

Who could qualify for Argus II retinal prosthetic goggles?

Argus II was not simply a pair of glasses. Its glasses contained a video camera and worked with an implanted retinal prosthesis and other external equipment. The FDA’s historical Humanitarian Device Exemption criteria described a narrow group of adults with severe-to-profound retinitis pigmentosa (RP).

Historical Argus II criterion What it meant
Age 25 or older The person had to be an adult at least 25 years old.
Severe-to-profound RP The qualifying condition was RP, rather than inherited blindness of any cause.
Bare or no light perception in both eyes Vision had to be at the severe end of the range specified in the FDA record.
Previous useful form vision The person had to have had useful vision for recognizing shapes before losing it.
Aphakic or pseudophakic status The natural lenses had to be absent or replaced with artificial lenses.
Ability to complete care and rehabilitation The person had to be able to attend follow-up visits, device fitting, and visual rehabilitation.

For patients with no residual light perception, the FDA criteria also required confirmation of intact inner retinal function. Meeting the historical criteria would not by itself mean that the device is currently obtainable: Cortigent says Argus II is no longer available. A company SEC filing corroborates that production and marketing were discontinued in 2019.

Is another retinal or visual prosthesis available?

Cortigent describes Orion as an investigational cortical prosthesis intended for profound blindness from several causes. It is not FDA-approved, according to the manufacturer. Orion is not the same system as Argus II, and its investigational status should not be confused with an approved treatment option.

If someone offers or discusses “prosthetic goggles,” ask for the device’s exact name and regulatory status. The phrase alone does not establish that it is an approved, available treatment; it could refer to a discontinued implant system, a research device, or a nonmedical vision aid.

How the options differ

Pathway What determines eligibility Status in the United States
LUXTURNA gene therapy Confirmed biallelic RPE65 mutation-associated retinal dystrophy and viable retinal cells, as determined by the treating physician; treatment is not recommended below 12 months of age. FDA-approved for this specific indication.
Argus II retinal prosthesis Historical criteria focused on adults 25 or older with severe-to-profound RP, bare or no light perception in both eyes, previous useful form vision, specified lens status, and capacity for follow-up and rehabilitation. Manufacturer says it is no longer available; production and marketing were discontinued in 2019, according to an SEC filing.
Orion cortical prosthesis Manufacturer describes it as intended for profound blindness across several causes. Investigational and not FDA-approved, according to the manufacturer.

These are different medical approaches, not alternatives a patient can select based only on the degree of vision loss. The cause of blindness, genetic findings, remaining retinal structure or function, relevant medical history, regulatory status, and ability to complete follow-up and rehabilitation all matter.

What risks and care needs should be discussed?

LUXTURNA is delivered by subretinal injection. FDA approval-review materials identify serious risks that include infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis), permanent decline in visual acuity, increased intraocular pressure, retinal tears or breaks, and development or progression of cataracts. A treating specialist should review the current prescribing information and weigh these risks against the expected benefits for the individual.

Before a decision, ask the care team:

  • Has clinical genetic testing confirmed two disease-causing RPE65 variants, and how are the results interpreted?
  • Does the eye examination show viable retinal cells, and what does that finding mean for candidacy?
  • How do the patient’s diagnosis and eye findings compare with the FDA indication?
  • What are the expected benefits, surgical steps, risks, and follow-up needs for this patient?
  • What genetic counseling, low-vision services, and rehabilitation are available locally?

This article summarizes U.S. regulatory information accessed October 9, 2026. It cannot determine an individual’s eligibility or establish access or reimbursement outside the United States. An ophthalmologist and genetics team can assess the patient’s situation using current labeling and clinical information.
