You can replace a video background without having filmed against a green screen. Use an editor’s AI background-removal or subject-mask feature to isolate the person, put a new image, video, or color on a lower layer, then review and refine the mask across the moving clip before exporting. If the footage was shot against an evenly lit green or blue screen, chroma key is a separate, often more controllable option.
Choose AI removal or chroma key
Start with AI Auto removal or an object mask when the footage has an ordinary room or outdoor background. These tools try to identify the subject without requiring a solid-color backdrop. CapCut documents Auto removal for footage without a green screen (CapCut’s video background remover).

Use chroma key when the subject was filmed against an even, solid green or blue screen. It removes a selected color rather than identifying the subject with AI, so lighting consistency, contrast between the screen and the subject’s clothing, and spill cleanup matter. Adobe’s Ultra Key instructions apply to this chroma-key method, not to AI masking (Adobe Premiere Pro: Apply and customize Chromakey using the Ultra Key effect).
Replace the background in CapCut
CapCut documents both desktop and online workflows. Labels can vary by platform or software update, so use the path matching the version you have open.

CapCut desktop
- Import the video and place it on the timeline.
- Select the clip, then choose Video > Remove BG > Auto removal.
- Add the replacement color, still image, or video on a track below the subject clip so it appears behind the cutout.
- Preview the clip from start to finish. Check moving edges for holes, flicker, or parts of the background that remain.
- Use available custom refinement or edge controls to repair the mask. Adjust expansion or feathering if offered, and compare the subject’s brightness and color with the replacement.
- Preview the composite, choose export settings appropriate for the destination, and export.
CapCut online
- Open the video in CapCut’s online editor and select the clip.
- Choose Smart tools > Remove background > Auto removal.
- Add a color, image, or video behind the isolated subject.
- Review the moving clip, refine problem areas where possible, then preview and export with suitable settings.

Use Premiere Pro’s Object Mask
If you already edit in Premiere Pro, Adobe’s June 1, 2026 tutorial demonstrates selecting a subject with Object Mask, tracking the mask both forward and backward, repairing gaps frame by frame, and refining the mask before compositing. Put the replacement clip on a lower timeline track so it sits behind the subject. Adobe notes that mask gaps and dark edges can require manual repair; inspect the whole moving shot rather than judging only one frame. See Adobe Learn’s Object Mask background replacement tutorial.

Fix common background-removal problems
- Unstable or missing areas: Complex backgrounds can confuse automatic removal. Use custom or manual masking for the difficult section, and check whether the mask changes or flickers as the subject moves.
- Parts of the subject disappear: A subject color similar to the background can be removed along with it. Refine the mask manually where available, and review the result against the actual replacement rather than only a transparent preview.
- Rough, dark, or flickering edges: Inspect multiple points throughout the clip. Repair gaps, and adjust mask expansion or feathering when the editor provides those controls.
- The subject looks pasted on: A mismatch in brightness, color, or apparent lighting between subject and replacement can make the composite look unnatural. Choose a better-matched background or adjust the composite to bring the tones closer.
- Green or blue spill: This is most relevant to chroma-key footage. Check the key and spill cleanup controls; avoid treating chroma-key lighting and color requirements as mandatory for AI subject masking.
Export and review the finished composite
Preview the complete moving video after masking and after compositing. Look for missed areas, edge changes, and lighting or color mismatches that are less apparent on a still frame. Before export, select resolution, format, and frame rate options suited to the destination and verify the exported file plays as expected. The documented workflows do not establish one universal export setting; choose according to your delivery requirements.
