For the best chance of preserving a G-SHOCK’s water resistance, have the battery replaced by the original retailer or an authorized CASIO service center, and request a water-resistance check at the same time. The correct battery depends on the exact watch or module; closing the caseback does not prove the watch is water-resistant.
Why battery replacement can affect water resistance
Opening the watch case disturbs the seal between the case and its gasket. A gasket can be aged, damaged, displaced, or contaminated when the case is opened, and visible closure alone cannot establish that the watch still meets its marked rating. CASIO advises professional battery replacement and a water-resistance check. Its Module 5714 guidance says to leave replacement to the original retailer or an authorized CASIO service center and to request a check for proper water resistance: CASIO Module 5714 battery-replacement guidance.

CASIO’s Module 3516 operating precautions say a trained technician will inspect the watch for proper water resistance when its battery is replaced. That is module-specific guidance, not a promise that every service provider or location follows identical procedures. Ask what the local service includes.
Find the exact battery and instructions first
There is no single battery number or universal G-SHOCK teardown. Identify the watch’s model or module number, then use the matching current CASIO manual to confirm the specified battery and any model-specific service instructions. CASIO warns that using a different battery type can cause malfunction. The Module 5714 manual is useful as an example of the brand’s guidance, but it does not establish the battery or procedure for another module.

- Locate the model or module information. Check the watch and its documentation; record the identifier before ordering a battery or seeking service.
- Open the matching CASIO manual. Use the model/module identifier to find the correct instructions on CASIO’s support site.
- Confirm the specified battery. Do not substitute a cell based on another G-SHOCK model or a generic online list.

For a watch that will be exposed to water, the professional route is the safer choice. If you still open the case yourself, follow only the exact module’s instructions and do not treat a successful battery change as confirmation of water resistance. No universal DIY procedure, battery part number, or pressure-testing specification applies to every G-SHOCK.
Ask about the gasket and test before handing over the watch
Tell the retailer or service center the model/module number and mention any cracks or other visible case or resin damage. Ask whether the service includes a gasket inspection or replacement and a water-resistance test after the case is closed. Service terms, availability, and methods vary by region. CASIO’s Module 3516 precautions give about two or three years as a general interval for periodic gasket replacement. This is guidance, not a guarantee that every gasket lasts that long; condition and the exact watch matter. CASIO Singapore separately recommends gasket replacement at least every 18 months on its regional service page. Treat that interval as Singapore-specific rather than universal.

Understand the rating—and when to stop using the watch
CASIO’s US technology page describes G-SHOCK water resistance as 20 bar and identifies FROGMAN as the collection with ISO-standard 200 m diving water resistance: CASIO G-SHOCK water-resistance information. These are brand-level statements, not a substitute for the rating and instructions for your exact model. A printed rating should not be read as permission to use every watch for every water activity, particularly after the case has been opened.

If the case or resin is cracked or visibly damaged, tell the service provider before work begins; CASIO says abnormal or cracked resin components may prevent service. If moisture appears inside or fogging persists, stop using the watch and seek authorized service rather than attempting a battery change. After replacement, keep the watch away from water until an appropriate water-resistance check has been completed.
