If Windows 10 won’t boot, open the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try Startup Repair first: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. If that fails, choose a recovery option that matches what changed—such as uninstalling a recent update or using System Restore—before considering a reset or reinstall. If the PC is encrypted, have its BitLocker recovery key ready.
Before you start: protect access to recovery
- If BitLocker encryption is enabled, WinRE may ask for the recovery key before allowing some recovery actions. Locate the key before proceeding. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance and recovery options.
- If important files are accessible from another route, back them up before choosing a reset or reinstall. A clean installation removes personal files as well as apps, customizations, and settings.
- Disconnecting recently added peripherals may help isolate a startup issue, but Microsoft’s cited recovery instructions do not establish that this will fix every failure.
How to open Windows Recovery Environment
Windows may open WinRE automatically after repeated startup failures. If it does not, Microsoft documents several routes; the exact key or boot-menu process can vary by PC maker.

- Use automatic recovery: allow Windows to attempt startup recovery after repeated failed starts.
- Use Shift + Restart: if you can reach the sign-in screen or desktop, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- Use a manufacturer recovery button: consult the PC maker for the model-specific button or startup procedure.
- Start from recovery or installation media: connect the drive or disc, then select it from the PC’s boot menu if needed. For Microsoft’s WinRE access guidance, see Windows recovery environment.
Run Startup Repair first
In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, then follow the prompts. Startup Repair scans for common startup problems and attempts to fix issues such as damaged system files, boot configuration problems, master boot record problems, incompatible drivers, or registry errors. Microsoft notes that if it cannot fix the problem, it provides a report of the issues it found. It is a first step, not a guarantee: hardware faults and other causes may need different help. Details are in Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.

Choose the next recovery option based on what happened
| What may have caused the boot problem | WinRE option | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| It began after a recent Windows update | Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates | Removes a recent update that may be causing the startup problem. |
| A suitable restore point is available | Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore | Rolls back system files and settings without affecting personal files. |
| Less disruptive options did not work | Troubleshoot > Reset this PC | Reinstalls Windows and lets you choose to keep personal files or remove everything. Keeping files does not preserve every app and setting. |
| WinRE options failed or Windows cannot be recovered | Use a manufacturer recovery image or Microsoft installation media | A manufacturer image may include drivers or factory apps for the PC. A clean installation from Microsoft media removes personal files, apps, customizations, and settings. |
These options and their consequences are described in Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows.

Use recovery or installation media if WinRE options fail
A recovery drive or manufacturer recovery image may be useful when built-in recovery cannot repair the PC. Another option is Microsoft installation media, created on a working PC. Microsoft specifies a USB drive of at least 8 GB for its recovery-options process; creating media may erase existing contents on the USB drive, so use one with nothing you need to keep. The drive is only a way to access recovery or setup—it does not itself repair Windows.
Connect the media and restart. If Windows Setup does not appear, the PC may not be set to boot from that drive. Follow the PC manufacturer’s instructions for changing boot order or choosing a startup device. See Microsoft’s guides to recovery options and reinstalling Windows with installation media.

When recovery still does not work
If Startup Repair reports that it cannot fix the problem, or the PC cannot reach recovery, do not assume that repeating the same repair will solve it. A missing BitLocker key, hardware failure, or model-specific boot behavior may require separate assistance. A clean reinstall is disruptive and should be a last resort when files matter; back up any files you can access first. Microsoft’s instructions explain the recovery choices, but they do not establish a universal fix for every hardware or boot failure.
