How long should a TV last?
There is no dependable single lifespan for every television. A nearly three-year RTINGS accelerated test, run from November 2022 through September 2025, recorded 20 outright failures and 24 partial failures among 102 tested TVs. Most accumulated roughly 18,000 hours—more than many households use a TV before replacing it. The test was deliberately harsh, including extended daily operation, high-brightness stress and repeated static content, so its results reveal possible failure modes rather than predict when a household TV will fail. RTINGS’ failure analysis cautions against treating the sample as a population-wide failure rate.

RTINGS reported at least one failed LED in 34% of the LED models in its test. That is a result from the tested models under those conditions, not a forecast that one in three LED TVs in homes will fail. The report found no simple relationship between purchase price and longevity, and the small, uneven brand samples do not support ranking brands by reliability.
Which panel type is more likely to last?
Panel labels alone cannot settle the question: use pattern and construction matter, and the available accelerated-test results are not a clean head-to-head trial.

OLED: consider how much static content you watch
OLED pixels produce their own light. Uneven aging can leave permanent burn-in when the same bright graphics remain on screen for long periods—for example, a channel logo, news ticker or game HUD. A viewer who leaves one channel or game on for many hours every day should weigh this risk more heavily than someone who watches varied films and shows. Modern OLEDs have image-care features, and mixed viewing is materially different from a continuous static-image stress test; the test does not establish that typical mixed use will produce the same result.
Every OLED in RTINGS’ accelerated test developed burn-in under its deliberately harsh exposure. That finding demonstrates a possible failure mode, not the expected outcome for ordinary viewing. RTINGS’ final three-year test update includes continued observations of burn-in and LCD degradation, while emphasizing the extended daily use in the test.

LCD/LED: look beyond the “QLED” label
LCD televisions use a backlight, and failures can affect LEDs, light-guide plates or screen uniformity. RTINGS’ test found heat-related concerns in some thin edge-lit sets and recommends considering direct-lit or full-array LCD construction for better heat distribution. Treat this as guidance drawn from an accelerated test, not a guarantee that a direct-lit or full-array model will outlast every edge-lit TV. “QLED” is a color-related LCD implementation, not a self-emissive panel type or a promise of longer life.

| Panel group in RTINGS’ test | Models tested | Complete failures | Partial failures |
|---|---|---|---|
| VA | 58 | 13 | 13 |
| IPS | 24 | 4 | 11 |
| WOLED | 17 | 2 | 0 |
| QD-OLED | 3 | 1 | 0 |
RTINGS specifically warns that the IPS result is misleading as a simple technology comparison because many of the IPS sets tested were entry-level. The QD-OLED group, with just three models, is also too small for a broad conclusion.
LCD backlight construction in the test
| Backlight configuration | Models tested | Complete failures | Partial failures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct-lit, no local dimming | 28 | 8 | 8 |
| Edge-lit, no local dimming | 10 | 2 | 4 |
| Edge-lit, with local dimming | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Full-array | 43 | 7 | 8 |
| OLED | 20 | 3 | 0 |
These counts describe RTINGS’ tested sample, not equal-sized groups or a controlled comparison of otherwise identical TVs. They are useful for identifying construction and failure modes to investigate, not for calculating a buyer’s odds.

How bright should a TV be, and does brightness affect lifespan?
Choose brightness for the room and your viewing needs; a brightness number is not a standalone durability score. A bright room may make a brighter set more comfortable to watch, while a dark room may not call for the same output. The cited evidence does not establish a universal brightness target in nits for a particular room.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Brightness and burn-in resistance are not interchangeable. In an August 2026 analysis, RTINGS said its tested 2020–2023 OLEDs did not show a consistent burn-in improvement over an older reference at the same 10,500-hour CNN checkpoint. The comparison was not made at matched luminance. RTINGS also found its 2023 OLED review set was brighter on average than its 2017 models. That supports a limited conclusion: newer OLEDs’ higher output does not, by itself, prove improved burn-in resistance at equal brightness. Read the comparison and its qualifications.

How to compare TVs for longevity before buying
- Start with your viewing pattern. Note whether the TV will show fixed channel graphics, dashboards or game HUDs for long stretches, or mostly varied content. Persistent static images make OLED burn-in more relevant.
- Match brightness to the room. Consider how much daylight or other ambient light reaches the screen and whether you watch mostly during the day or in a darkened room. Do not treat a peak-brightness figure as proof of durability.
- Check the actual screen construction. For LCD models, find out whether the backlight is edge-lit, direct-lit or full-array; do not infer construction from “QLED.” For OLED, consider whether the expected use includes long sessions with unchanging graphics.
- Look for model-level evidence. Seek credible information about repairs and reliability for the specific model, while checking how many units and years of use support the claim. A small accelerated-test sample is not a brand ranking or a guarantee about a current generation.
- Read the warranty before paying. Confirm the exact terms for the model, seller and country, including service, pixel policy and exclusions. Do not assume a retailer plan covers burn-in unless its written terms explicitly say so.
- Compare price after the practical factors. RTINGS’ test did not find a simple price-to-longevity link. A higher price alone is not evidence that a TV will last longer.
What to check in a TV warranty
Warranty coverage can vary by model, country and seller, including within a brand. RTINGS’ warranty comparison lists one year of parts and labor for several brands and 1 to 1.5 years for some Sony models, but those summarized terms may change and should not substitute for the current written warranty. Use the comparison as a starting point, then check the exact policy.
- Coverage period: Find the start date and duration, and whether registration or proof of purchase is required.
- Parts and labor: Confirm whether both are covered and whether you must pay shipping, transport or an in-home service fee.
- Pixel policy: Check how many defective pixels trigger service and whether the policy distinguishes dead, stuck or bright pixels.
- Exclusions: Look for explicit language on burn-in, accidental damage, misuse and ordinary wear. Manufacturer warranties generally address manufacturing faults; they may not cover accidental damage or ordinary wear.
- Remedy and service: Find out whether the remedy is repair, replacement or refund, and whether service is in-home or requires shipping the TV.
- Transferability: Check whether coverage follows the TV if it is sold or given to someone else.
Keep the receipt and warranty document, and record the model and serial number. If a problem appears, document the symptom and check the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance before arranging service; RTINGS’ common-TV troubleshooting guide covers initial checks, but warranty eligibility is determined by the applicable policy.
What is not established yet about newer TVs?
RTINGS’ Longevity 3.0 test had only just started as of October 2, 2026, so it does not yet establish long-term outcomes for current generations. Its early results should not be used to claim that recent models will last longer—or fail sooner—than older ones. See RTINGS’ description of the new test.
