How to Render Video Faster in After Effects

A practical guide to faster After Effects previews and exports: diagnose slow layers, use Multi-Frame Rendering, improve storage and cache, and match export settings to the deliverable.

To render faster in After Effects, first find what is slowing the project down, then target that bottleneck. Multi-Frame Rendering can help CPU-heavy work; fast local storage helps when footage or cache access is slow; and proxies, pre-rendering, or lighter preview settings can cut time spent waiting while you work. None is a universal speed switch, and preview-only changes do not necessarily make a final export faster.

Find the bottleneck before changing settings

Run a short, representative render and note the elapsed and estimated remaining time in the Render Queue. Check the estimated file size, available disk space, and render information. In the Composition Profiler, compare the relative render time of layers and effects to identify expensive parts of the composition. Adobe recommends testing the workflow and output pipeline early rather than assuming a particular component is responsible (Adobe: Improve performance in After Effects; Adobe: Composition Profiler).

For a useful before-and-after comparison, keep the frame range and output settings the same. Render settings control properties such as frame rate, duration, resolution, and layer quality; output module settings control format, compression, and cropping (Adobe: Rendering and exporting basics).

Use Multi-Frame Rendering for parallel frame processing

Multi-Frame Rendering (MFR) lets After Effects use CPU cores to render multiple frames at once for previews and Render Queue exports. Adobe says MFR is enabled by default; check or change it in Edit > Preferences > Memory & Performance on Windows or After Effects > Settings > Memory & Performance on macOS. Performance depends on the CPU, RAM, GPU, effects, third-party plug-ins, and project type, so enabling MFR does not guarantee a particular improvement (Adobe: Preview and render with Multi-Frame Rendering).

  • Dell Services: 1 Year Onsite Service provides support when and where you need it. Dell will come to your home, office, or location of choice, if an issue covered by Limited Hardware Warranty cannot be resolved remotely.

Adobe’s documentation for After Effects 2022 gives example MFR improvements of 1.2–1.5× for a 4–6-core system with 16 GB RAM, 1.75–2× for an 8–10-core system with 16–32 GB RAM, and 2.5–4× for a 16–64-core system with 48–128 GB RAM. Those are version-specific examples, not benchmarks for your system or predictions for a current project. Adobe’s current general performance guidance recommends at least 2 GB of RAM per processor core; that is guidance, not a measured optimum for every workload (Adobe: Multi-Frame Rendering; Adobe: Improve performance).

Look for a yellow warning icon in the Effects Control panel: it identifies an effect without MFR support, which may constrain parallel rendering. Render Queue process information can show concurrent frames and system use. MFR is not the older “Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously” feature, which launched multiple After Effects instances.

Improve footage and cache access when storage is the hold-up

Keep source footage on a fast local disk when possible. Adobe warns that slow drives and network storage can reduce performance, and recommends a separate fast disk or disk array for disk cache; SSDs are well suited because of their speed. Enable Disk Cache in After Effects’ preferences and place it on a fast drive with ample available space. If practical, keep source media and rendered output on separate fast local disks (Adobe: Improve performance in After Effects).

An external SSD may be a practical way to add fast local project or cache storage, but choose one only after checking your computer’s connection and the project’s storage needs. Adobe’s guidance does not establish a particular model, capacity, interface, or benchmark. An SSD will not fix a render limited by an expensive effect or CPU processing.

Reduce repeated work in the composition

  • Remove unused project material. Delete or exclude footage and layers the composition does not need; split a complex project where doing so makes its processing easier to manage.
  • Pre-render completed nested compositions. This can prevent After Effects from repeatedly processing a finished nested composition whenever it is used.
  • Use proxies while iterating. Lower-resolution or still-image proxies can stand in for source footage during work that does not require the original media. Restore the intended sources and settings for final output.
  • Render only what you need to inspect. Lower the composition resolution while working, solo the layer being edited, or limit work to a region of interest.
  • Defer costly effects when appropriate. Temporarily disable expensive blurs or distortions, or reduce particle counts while previewing. If an effect applied to several layers produces the intended result on their composite, applying it to an adjustment layer can let After Effects process that effect once for the layers below.
  • Gather media onto fast local storage. Use File > Dependencies > Collect Files when appropriate before moving a project or preparing its media for rendering.

These techniques reduce or postpone composition work; check the full-quality result before delivery, especially if a proxy, disabled effect, or altered particle count changes the intended image (Adobe: Improve performance in After Effects).

Make previews and screen updates lighter

Several settings make interaction smoother by reducing preview or panel work, not by making the final rendered pixels cheaper to compute. For previews, set resolution to Auto, lower magnification, close panels you do not need, hide unnecessary controls, and use hardware-accelerated previews for drawing panels where available. Limit the preview to a region of interest when you are checking a small area. Press Caps Lock to pause panel updates; Adobe notes this can save processing time for simple Render Queue items with many frames (Adobe: Improve performance; Adobe: Rendering and exporting basics).

Choose GPU rendering and export settings for the deliverable

In File > Project Settings > Video Rendering and Effects, After Effects offers Mercury Software Only and Mercury GPU Acceleration options. GPU acceleration can help supported GPU effects, but it does not make every render GPU-bound. Adobe warns that GPU-accelerated effects can produce small color-precision differences from CPU-only rendering in 8-bpc projects; for accuracy, Adobe advises using 16-bpc or 32-bpc. Confirm image-quality requirements before changing project bit depth or rendering mode (Adobe: Rendering and exporting basics).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the export path according to the file you need. Adobe recommends the After Effects Render Queue for high-quality intermediate movies or image sequences intended for another editing, compositing, or 3D application. For compressed web, DVD, or Blu-ray delivery, Adobe recommends Adobe Media Encoder. The Render Queue can batch items and add output modules, so you can make multiple outputs from the same rendered movie rather than rendering the composition again for each output (Adobe: Rendering and exporting basics).

For the MPEG-2 or WMV workflows covered in Adobe’s guidance, you can render a losslessly encoded master in After Effects to a watched folder for Media Encoder to encode, or add the composition directly to Media Encoder. The watched-folder method uses After Effects rendering features where applicable and Media Encoder’s parallel encoding, but occupies the main After Effects application during rendering. Direct queueing lets you continue working, though Adobe cautions that rendering may be slower because the background After Effects instance may lack GPU acceleration and multiprocessing. This is format- and version-specific advice, not a universal speed ranking (Adobe: Exporting using Adobe Media Encoder).

A practical order for speeding up a render

  1. Run a representative test. Record the frame range, render time, output settings, and any signs of disk-space or media-access problems.
  2. Inspect the composition. Use the Composition Profiler and Render Queue information to find costly layers, effects, or repeated nested work.
  3. Try the matching fix. Check MFR for parallel CPU work, move media or cache to fast local storage if access is slow, or reduce repeated work and preview quality while iterating.
  4. Verify the final output. Restore the required resolution, effects, frame range, bit depth, and delivery format; compare against the original test using the same settings.
  5. Consider hardware only after diagnosis. A faster CPU, GPU, or SSD can help only when the project is limited by the resource it improves; Adobe’s general guidance also recommends at least 2 GB RAM per processor core.
