To get an alert when Claude Code finishes a response, add a command hook under the Stop event in your settings JSON. On macOS, the command can use osascript to display a notification. A Stop hook runs on ordinary completion of the main agent’s response—not when you interrupt it, and not when an API error triggers StopFailure.
Choose the event that matches the alert you want
Use Stop when you want to know that Claude Code’s main agent has finished responding. Anthropic’s Hooks reference says the event “Runs when the main Claude Code agent has finished responding. Does not run if the stoppage occurred due to a user interrupt. API errors fire StopFailure instead.”

For a basic completion alert, there is no need to inspect hook input or parse the last assistant message.
Add a Stop command hook to settings
For a personal alert that applies across projects, edit ~/.claude/settings.json. Project-level or local settings are alternatives when the behavior should be limited to a repository or a particular local setup. The official hooks guide shows hooks configured in settings JSON and advises adding an event key alongside existing keys, not replacing the whole hooks object.

Open

Save the JSON, preserving valid commas and brackets and any other settings already in the file.
macOS command
Anthropic’s guide gives this macOS notification command as an example for a Notification hook. For a completion alert, change the message and place it under Stop as shown above:

osascript -e 'display notification "Claude Code has finished" with title "Claude Code"'The command is specific to macOS. The cited guide presents platform-specific command examples; use the appropriate command for Linux or Windows rather than copying the macOS example there. The guide’s example text “Claude Code needs your attention” is for a waiting/input notification, which is a different event.

Let the main agent complete a normal response, then check whether the operating system displays the notification. An interruption is not a valid completion test because user interrupts do not fire
Stop.
If no macOS notification appears
Anthropic notes that osascript routes notifications through the built-in Script Editor app and may fail silently if Script Editor does not have notification permission. Run this once in Terminal:

osascript -e 'display notification "test"'If it still does not appear, check macOS notification settings for Script Editor. This is a macOS-specific permission check, not a general fix for other operating systems.
If the hook does not appear or run

Check that the entry is nested under the top-level
hooksobject and namedStop. -
Confirm you edited the settings file intended for your use: user settings for a personal cross-project hook, or project/local settings for narrower behavior.

Verify that the command exists and is valid for your operating system, and check that the operating system permits notifications.

Review the command before enabling it
A command hook executes a shell command with your user’s permissions. Anthropic warns that hooks can access, modify, or delete files available to that user. Review the command before saving it; keep a notification command simple and avoid inserting untrusted values into it.
