First, identify which Media Player you mean
Microsoft distinguishes Windows Media Player Legacy from the newer Media Player app. This guide covers removing the Legacy optional feature, not uninstalling the newer app. If you are unsure which app you have, check its name in the Start menu or in Settings before making a change. To investigate the newer app on your device, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 and look for Media Player. Availability and uninstall controls can vary by build; the documented Legacy removal steps below do not promise to uninstall it.

How to remove Windows Media Player Legacy in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Optional features.
- Under Installed features, search for or locate Windows Media Player Legacy.
- Expand its entry and select Remove.
Windows removes the Legacy optional feature. If the entry is not immediately visible, use the search field in the Installed features list.

How to remove Windows Media Player in Windows 10
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Manage optional features.
- Find Windows Media Player in the installed optional-features list.
- Select it and choose Uninstall or Remove, if that control is shown.
Windows 10 builds can use different labels, so the exact control may vary. Microsoft’s general optional-feature guidance describes removal from the installed-features list; it also notes that Settings paths and labels can differ across supported versions and cumulative updates. If the route differs on your PC, search Settings for Optional features and use the installed-features list. A work or school administrator may manage access to these controls. What to check if the player is missing
Windows N edition
Windows 10 and 11 N editions omit Windows Media Player and related media technologies. If you cannot find the player or other media functions, check whether your Windows edition is N. Microsoft says those technologies can be restored by installing the Media Feature Pack as an optional feature, and that a restart is required after applying the pack. Optional-features controls are unavailable
On a managed device, your organization may restrict or control feature management. If you cannot access the installed-features list, contact your IT administrator rather than trying an unsupported workaround.

No such result is established by the Legacy optional-feature instructions. Microsoft treats Windows Media Player Legacy and the newer Media Player as separate apps, so check Settings > Apps > Installed apps on your Windows 11 build if you want to see whether the newer app has its own uninstall control. Do not assume that removing Legacy removes both.

Does removing the feature require an internet connection?
Microsoft specifically says Windows Update is used to download content when adding optional features, so the device needs to be online for that download. That guidance does not establish that every removal requires internet access.
