To remove an unwanted object or style from an AI-generated image, be explicit about what should change and what must stay the same. Use the image tool’s own syntax: Midjourney supports a dedicated --no parameter, while OpenAI’s image-editing guide uses ordinary-language instructions such as “Remove the flower from man’s hand. Do not change anything else.” Neither approach guarantees a pixel-perfect edit.
Choose the right kind of instruction
First decide whether you are creating a new image or editing one that already exists. For a new image, describe the subject and desired appearance, then use the generator’s supported way to express exclusions. For an edit, identify the specific object or trait to change and name the surrounding details to preserve.

There is no universal negative-prompt syntax. Midjourney documents --no for exclusions. OpenAI’s Image prompting guide demonstrates direct natural-language editing instructions; it does not document Midjourney’s parameter as an OpenAI control.
| Task or approach | What to say or use | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Midjourney exclusion | --no followed by unwanted items |
A dedicated parameter; Midjourney says terms after it are read independently. |
| OpenAI image edit | A direct instruction naming what to remove and what to preserve | Natural-language editing guidance, not the --no parameter. |
| Local edit to an existing image | Name the object and its location, then specify unchanged composition details | Useful preservation language can guide the edit but cannot ensure exact fidelity. |
Remove an object from an existing image
Be concrete: identify the object, where it appears, the result you want, and the elements that should remain intact. OpenAI’s example is “Remove the flower from man’s hand. Do not change anything else.” Its guide recommends naming the object explicitly and preserving what surrounds it.

A reusable natural-language pattern is:
Remove the [specific object] from [location]. Keep [subject], [pose], lighting, framing, and background unchanged. Do not add new objects or text.
Replace the bracketed parts with details that actually matter in your image. This is a prompt pattern adapted from OpenAI’s guidance, not a guarantee that every edit will preserve all those details.

Exclude objects in Midjourney
Midjourney’s “No” documentation describes the parameter this way: “Tell Midjourney what you don’t want in your image using the no parameter: --no.” It shows the example still life gouache painting --no fruit, apple, pear. Put the parameter at the end of the prompt and list the unwanted elements clearly.

Be careful with compound exclusions. Midjourney says its moderation system reads each word after --no independently. Its example, --no modern clothing, can be problematic because “modern” and “clothing” may each be treated as excluded terms. When a phrase could be read in an unintended way, specify the clothing or other content you do want rather than relying on an ambiguous exclusion.

Change an unwanted style without losing the image
State the desired rendering as well as the style trait to avoid. For example: Keep the same subject, layout, and colors. Change the rendering to [desired style]. Avoid [one concrete unwanted style trait]. This pattern applies OpenAI Academy’s advice to use explicit constraints and revise incrementally; it is not a vendor-provided template.
“Avoid a bad style” is less actionable than naming a recognizable trait and describing the alternative. Keep the edit focused: if you want to change the rendering but preserve the subject, layout, and colors, say so directly instead of rewriting the whole prompt with many new creative directions.

Revise in small, controlled steps
OpenAI Academy recommends small, targeted revisions and repeating key details to reduce drift. OpenAI’s GPT Image Generation Models Prompting Guide also recommends starting from a clean base and using single-change follow-ups, such as removing one extra tree or restoring the original background.
- Describe the core image. Establish the subject, composition, and visual details you care about before adding a long list of exclusions.
- Make one change per follow-up. Ask to remove one unwanted object or alter one style trait at a time.
- Restate the important invariants. If the image starts drifting, repeat the details that must remain, such as the original background, framing, or subject pose.
- Check the result against the request. If something else changed, make a focused correction rather than replacing the whole prompt with unrelated instructions.
What a prompt can—and cannot—preserve
More specific instructions can direct a model toward the intended edit, but they do not guarantee an exact result. OpenAI’s Image generation API guide lists composition control and consistency as limitations: models may struggle with precise placement in layout-sensitive compositions and with recurring elements across generations. If exact placement or unchanged details are essential, inspect the output rather than assuming the instruction was followed perfectly.
