Image-to-prompt tools often miss details because they generate a concise description of an image, not a complete record of everything in it—and not the original prompt that created it. To get a more useful result, tell the tool what you need the description for, request a structured inventory of visible details, check it against the image, and refine one important omission at a time.
Why image-to-prompt tools leave things out
A caption is a selective summary
An image contains more information than a short caption can preserve. A general request such as “describe this image” asks the model to choose what seems salient; it may mention the main subject and overall scene while leaving out a small object, a precise position, a material, or readable text that matters to your task.

The PromptCap paper explains the underlying problem: “Generic image captions often miss visual details essential for the LM to answer visual questions correctly.” Its approach uses a natural-language prompt to steer which visual entities a caption describes. That supports a practical lesson: ask about the details relevant to your goal instead of relying on one generic description. PromptCap: Prompt-Guided Task-Aware Image Captioning

A useful description may need to identify objects and attributes, understand how objects relate to one another, and express those observations in language. A caption can simplify a scene or favor its overall impression over the exact composition you want to recreate. The available studies explain general captioning and controllability challenges; they do not establish that every current tool reliably misses the same categories of detail.

It cannot recover a unique original prompt from the pixels
An image-derived prompt is a new interpretation of visible content. The cited captioning studies examine how to create or control descriptions; they do not establish a general method for recovering the creator’s exact wording, model settings, or intent. Many different prompts and generation settings can lead to images with similar visible features, so treat a generated description as a starting point, not as a transcript of the original request. How to get a more accurate, useful description
-
State what you want to do with it
Tell the tool whether you need a literal inventory, an accessibility description, a product listing, visual analysis, or a prompt for a particular image generator. The purpose helps focus the description on relevant information: a recreation prompt may need layout and lighting, while a product listing may depend more on visible materials and features. Task-aware captioning is supported by PromptCap; vision-prompting guidance also recommends defining the task and providing context. Microsoft Learn: Image prompt engineering techniques
-
Ask for observations before asking for a polished prompt
Have the tool inventory what is visibly supported before it turns those observations into creative instructions. Ask it to separate uncertain details rather than fill gaps with guesses. This uncertainty instruction is a cautious practical safeguard, not a documented guarantee that a model will correctly identify every uncertain detail.

Specify the output format
Breaking a complex request into parts makes omissions easier to spot. Microsoft recommends decomposing complex tasks and specifying the output format; OpenAI’s image prompting guidance similarly recommends organizing a request around scene, subject, details, and constraints. OpenAI: Image prompting
A reusable request is:
Describe only what is visibly supported by the image. First list the main subject and its attributes, then the positions and relationships of objects, composition, lighting, visual medium, and any readable text. Separate uncertain observations. After that, draft a prompt for [target tool] that prioritizes [key details]. Do not claim this is the original prompt.
This is a practical synthesis of the cited guidance, not a vendor-prescribed template.

Check the description against the image
Identify the few details that would materially change the result: for example, the number of objects, their relative positions, a particular material, or text that must remain legible. Ask a focused follow-up about those observations instead of requesting another unconstrained long caption.

Turn the description into a prompt, then refine it
Put the important visual information first
For a recreation prompt, lead with the subject and intended composition, then include the relevant attributes and constraints. You might describe where the subject sits in the frame, what it is doing, the setting, lighting, and visual medium. Include only details that serve the intended result; a long list of incidental observations can obscure the priorities.
Prompt formats are system-specific. AWS, for example, recommends describing a Nova Canvas request like an image caption rather than a command or conversation, and suggests including a subject, action, environment, and optional details such as pose, lighting, camera, and medium. That advice is for Nova Canvas image generation, not a universal syntax for captioning tools or other generators. Amazon Nova Canvas prompting best practices

Change one thing at a time
- Generate an image from the current prompt and compare it with the reference.
- Name the most important mismatch, such as an object being on the wrong side or the lighting being too harsh.
- Revise only the clause that addresses that mismatch, then compare the new result.
- Repeat for the next priority rather than rewriting the whole prompt after every attempt.
OpenAI recommends changing one thing at a time when refining image prompts. AWS gives more specific advice for Nova Canvas: hold the seed constant while making small prompt changes, then try other seeds after refining the prompt. Seed controls and their behavior differ across image generators, so use that technique only when the target system supports it. OpenAI: Prompt engineering best practices for ChatGPT
Inspect each result for details you meant to preserve
Prompt wording cannot guarantee exact preservation. OpenAI cautions that repeated edits can still change details intended to remain unchanged; restate important constraints and inspect each result rather than assuming they carried over.

There is no universal omission rate or named current cross-tool accuracy score established by the cited sources. PromptCap’s authors reported 60.4% on OK-VQA and 59.6% on A-OKVQA for their approach; those are results on specific visual-question-answering benchmarks, not accuracy estimates for image-to-prompt tools generally. Likewise, Vivian Liu and Lydia B. Chilton’s 2021 study examined prompt keywords and model hyperparameters for text-to-image generation across 5,493 generations in five experiments. It informs how prompt iteration has been studied, but it is not a benchmark of current tools that describe images. Design Guidelines for Prompt Engineering Text-to-Image Generative Models
When comparing tools for your own task, check whether each one captures the details that matter to you, separates observation from uncertain inference, handles relationships and text, provides an editable output, and produces a prompt that works in your target generator. These are practical evaluation questions, not published comparative scores. Official recommendations also differ by system: Microsoft’s guidance addresses image prompts to vision-enabled chat models, OpenAI’s addresses its own image-prompting guidance, and AWS’s concerns Nova Canvas.
