In Firefox 157, the most directly reported workaround is to turn off Nova: open about:config, find browser.nova.enabled, and set it to false. This removes Nova as a whole—not just the titlebar gradient. If you want to keep Nova, custom CSS may be worth experimenting with, but Mozilla does not officially support it and the suggested gradient rule has not been verified for current Firefox builds.
Option 1: Turn off Nova
- Enter
about:configin Firefox’s address bar and press Enter. - Accept the warning if Firefox displays one, then search for
browser.nova.enabled. - Change the preference to
false. Restart Firefox if the appearance does not update immediately.
A Mozilla Support moderator gave this as a workaround for Firefox 157. It disables the Nova interface broadly, so other Nova changes will disappear along with the gradient. To reverse it, return to the same preference and set it to true. Mozilla warns that changing advanced preferences can break Firefox or cause unexpected behavior; it does not guarantee this preference will remain available in later releases. Option 2: Try a different theme
A moderator in a Mozilla Support discussion suggested trying the Firefox Proton theme as an appearance alternative. The discussion does not establish that Proton removes only the gradient or preserves all Nova styling, so treat it as a broader appearance experiment rather than a targeted fix. Custom CSS may offer more control over Firefox’s interface, but it is an unsupported and version-sensitive approach. Mozilla says it does not officially support adding custom rules with userChrome.css or changing preferences through about:config. The following rule was proposed by a third-party article; it has not been verified here on current Firefox builds, and it may not remove only the titlebar gradient:

Mozilla’s documentation explains how to enable profile CSS and how to undo it. First make sure you are editing the active Firefox profile, back up the profile, and create a chrome folder in it if needed. Put the rule in a file named userChrome.css inside that folder, then set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to true in about:config and restart Firefox. The exact selector and visual result may vary by version or theme.
If the change causes problems, set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets back to false and remove or rename userChrome.css in the profile’s chrome folder. Mozilla’s instructions and support caveat are in Firefox advanced customization and configuration options. The unverified selector appears in AskVG’s third-party suggestion.

Why there may not be a gradient-only switch
Mozilla’s Firefox 157 Nova theme-authoring documentation describes gradient support and theme controls such as backgrounds_area, which determines whether images cover the window or remain in the top toolbars, and a toolbar color. Those are theme-authoring controls; they do not establish a simple end-user setting that removes only the titlebar gradient. Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog: Nova theme documentation.

Which approach should you choose?
| Approach | Scope | Support and stability | How to undo |
|---|---|---|---|
Set browser.nova.enabled to false |
Turns off Nova as a whole; not gradient-only. | Reported by a Mozilla Support moderator for Firefox 157. Advanced preference changes can cause unexpected behavior. | Set the preference back to true. |
| Try the Proton theme | Broader appearance change; gradient-only removal is not established. | Suggested in a Mozilla Support discussion; outcome is not guaranteed. | Switch back to your previous theme. |
Use custom userChrome.css |
Potentially more targeted, but the proposed selector is unverified. | Mozilla does not officially support custom CSS rules; behavior may change between versions. | Disable profile stylesheets and remove or rename the CSS file. |
These instructions reflect sources checked on October 4, 2026, and the reported workaround is specifically for Firefox 157. Check the preference and appearance in your installed version; no official, stable selector specifically for this gradient is established by the cited sources.
