To hide the subject field when composing in Messages, turn off Show Subject Field in the Messages settings. On some iOS versions, you’ll find Messages directly in Settings; on versions that group app settings, look under Settings > Apps > Messages.
Turn off the subject field in Messages
- Open Settings.
- Tap Messages. If you don’t see it in the main Settings list, tap Apps, then Messages.
- Turn off Show Subject Field.
- Return to Messages and start composing a new message to check that the separate subject field is no longer shown.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes the control as a way to turn the subject field on or off. Its guide edition uses the older path Settings > Messages, so the exact navigation may differ on your iOS version. A more recent walkthrough also gives that direct path: iPhone Life’s February 20, 2024 guide.

If “Show Subject Field” is missing
First check the Messages settings page, including under Settings > Apps > Messages if your iPhone groups app settings there. Apple’s older iPhone User Guide also documents that the subject field and its setting do not appear when the carrier does not support MMS. That is Apple’s stated caveat in that guide edition; it may not describe every current carrier, iOS version, or message type.

What this setting changes
The switch controls whether a separate subject field appears while composing in Messages. The available guidance does not establish what happens to subject text in messages that were already sent, so don’t treat turning the switch off as a way to edit existing conversations. No purchase or paid service is needed for this settings change.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Use the right Apple subject-field instructions
Apple’s guide titled Share long videos on iPhone concerns a subject field in Mail, not the Messages setting described here. For Messages, look specifically for Show Subject Field in the Messages settings.
