In the iPhone Photos app, open the Portrait photo, tap Portrait at the top-left, then tap Portrait Off. If you only want a sharper background rather than removing the effect altogether, use the Depth Control slider instead.

Depending on your iOS version or which screen you are viewing, the control may appear in the editing interface instead: open the photo, tap Edit, then tap Portrait to turn the effect off. Apple describes that control as a way to turn the Portrait effect on or off. Apple’s camera guide explains the toggle.

Reduce background blur without turning Portrait off
If you want to keep the Portrait look but make the background less blurry, open the photo, tap Edit, and adjust the Depth Control slider. This changes the amount of background blur; it is not the same as choosing Portrait Off. Apple’s iOS 26 guide covers Depth Control.
Turn the effect back on or undo edits
Where the Portrait control is available, you can use it again to turn the effect back on. To undo saved edits, open the photo, tap Edit, tap Revert, then tap Revert to Original. Reverting restores the photo to its original state, not just its previous blur setting. Apple documents both the Portrait controls and Revert workflow.

When Portrait effects are available on photos not taken in Portrait mode
Some supported iPhone models can capture depth information for photos taken in Photo mode when the Depth button appears. That depth data can let you apply Portrait effects later; it does not mean every ordinary photo can be converted into a Portrait photo. Apple’s camera guide describes this capability.
What happens to a Live Photo
For a Live Photo taken in Photo mode, Apple says Live Photo effects are unavailable while the Portrait effect is applied. Tap Live to view the Live Photo or apply a Live Photo effect without the Portrait effect. See Apple’s iPhone guide.
