Identify which popup you are seeing
The title alone does not identify the notification. The fastest fix is to check the branding and behavior of the window before changing settings.

If the popup contains Discord branding and appears over the game, start with the overlay procedure. If it says that you are playing, detected a game, or changed activity, use the activity-notification procedure instead. A Steam logo, invitation, or friend notification points to Steam rather than Discord.
Turn off the Discord Game Overlay
Discord documents the Game Overlay as an interface that lets you access Discord while a game is running without switching windows. Its main switch is the first setting to change when a Discord-branded panel, chat element, or overlay notification appears over Space Engineers.

- Open the Discord desktop application.
- Select User Settings using the cogwheel.
- Open Overlay.
- Switch Enable Overlay off.
- Return to Space Engineers and check whether the popup is gone.
This is a client-side change. It applies to the Discord installation and account you changed; it does not modify the dedicated server or change the experience for other players.
What you lose when the overlay is disabled
Disabling the overlay removes Discord’s in-game interface while a game is running. If you rely on that interface for in-game chat, voice controls, or other Discord features, those functions will no longer be available through the overlay. Discord itself remains available outside the game window.
Use a narrower game-specific control when available
Discord’s overlay guidance also supports disabling the overlay for an individual game when the problem is limited to that title. Open Discord’s game-related settings and look for Space Engineers in Registered Games. If Discord provides a per-game overlay switch for the entry, turn it off there instead of disabling the overlay globally. The exact controls can vary with Discord’s current desktop interface; do not assume that a setting shown for one game is present for every installation.
Stop Discord game-activity prompts
A game-activity prompt is separate from the overlay. You can have the overlay disabled and still receive a Discord message because Discord detected Space Engineers as a running game or is sharing your activity.

- Open Discord User Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Turn off the game-activity notification control if it is enabled.
- Open Registered Games and check the Space Engineers entry. Disable the game’s activity or related notification control if Discord presents one.
- If you do not want Discord to share game activity at all, turn off Activity Sharing.
These controls have different effects. Turning off a notification stops the prompt but may leave activity sharing enabled. Removing or disabling Space Engineers in Registered Games limits Discord’s treatment of that game. Turning off Activity Sharing is broader and affects activity visibility beyond this one title.
When the prompt appears as you join a server
Joining a server can coincide with Discord recognizing that Space Engineers is running. That timing does not prove that the server sent the popup. Discord’s client detects the game locally, and its activity or notification settings decide whether anything is displayed. Apply the change on the computer that shows the message.
Check whether Steam is responsible
Some notifications that appear while playing Space Engineers come from Steam rather than Discord. Invitations, friend messages, or a Steam-styled overlay should be handled in Steam’s client settings.
- Read the popup’s title, icon, and visual style to confirm that it is from Steam.
- Open Steam’s settings for the relevant game or overlay.
- Use Steam’s per-game overlay and notification controls to disable the message or invitation type.
- Test Space Engineers again and confirm that the remaining popup, if any, has the same source.
The exact Steam popup is not identified by the question, so a Discord-specific switch will not fix every Steam notification. Likewise, changing Steam settings will not remove a Discord overlay.

What a Space Engineers server owner can and cannot control
The Space Engineers Dedicated Server GUI and its configuration files govern the server and world: installation, world management, and server operation. The documented dedicated-server controls do not include a switch for Discord popups.
- A server owner can: configure the Space Engineers server and world through the documented server tools.
- A server owner cannot: centrally disable Discord’s overlay or activity notifications on another player’s computer through the Space Engineers server configuration.
- A player must: change Discord or Steam settings locally on the computer where the popup is rendered.
Do not edit world files, dedicated-server configuration, or startup settings looking for a Discord option. Those files are unrelated to an overlay drawn by a client application. If several players report the same popup, each player should verify the source and apply the corresponding client-side setting.
Platform limits: Windows, macOS, and Linux
Discord states that its Game Overlay is compatible with Windows only and does not function on macOS or Linux. Discord’s current overlay documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Windows 10 or 11: a Discord-branded in-game panel can be the documented Game Overlay. Use User Settings > Overlay > Enable Overlay first.
- macOS or Linux: the documented Discord Game Overlay is not available. If a Discord-branded popup appears, capture its exact wording and identify which application owns the window before changing server settings. It may be an activity notification or another client message rather than the Game Overlay.
Operating-system information helps narrow the diagnosis, but it does not replace checking the popup’s branding. A Steam notification can appear on a platform where Discord’s documented overlay is unavailable.

Choose the least disruptive remedy

Start with the narrowest setting that matches the symptom. If you only want to stop a game-detection prompt, changing activity notifications is less disruptive than disabling the entire overlay. If the popup is a Discord panel that appears over the game, disable the overlay itself.

- Record the source. Note the logo, exact wording, and whether the message appears inside the game window or as a desktop notification.
- Check the operating system. On Windows 10 or 11, the documented Discord overlay is possible. On macOS or Linux, treat a Discord popup as something other than that documented overlay until verified.
- Disable the Discord overlay. In Discord, go to User Settings > Overlay and switch off Enable Overlay.
- Check activity notifications. If the message remains, open User Settings > Notifications and disable game-activity prompts.
- Inspect Registered Games and Activity Sharing. Disable the Space Engineers entry or turn off Activity Sharing if the prompt is caused by activity detection.
- Test the same action again. Start Space Engineers, connect to the server, and observe whether the identical popup returns.
- Switch to Steam troubleshooting only when the branding matches. Use Steam’s own overlay and notification controls for a Steam message.
- Leave the server configuration alone. If the popup is rendered by Discord or Steam, no documented Space Engineers dedicated-server setting will remove it.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Changing the server when only one player sees the popup
A notification visible to one player is strong evidence that the setting belongs to that player’s client. Ask that player to change Discord or Steam settings locally rather than modifying the shared server.
Disabling the overlay but not activity notifications
The overlay and game-activity systems are separate. If the in-game panel disappears but a message about playing Space Engineers remains, use the Notifications, Registered Games, or Activity Sharing controls as appropriate.
Using a Windows overlay fix on macOS or Linux
The documented Game Overlay does not function on macOS or Linux. On those systems, identify the application and exact message first; do not assume that the Windows overlay switch is relevant.
Assuming every popup is Discord
Steam can display its own overlay messages and invitations while Space Engineers is running. Confirm the logo and window style before applying Discord-specific instructions.

Expecting a server-wide switch
Discord renders its interface on each player’s computer. A dedicated-server administrator cannot centrally suppress that rendering through the documented Space Engineers server configuration.
How to confirm the fix
- The popup no longer appears when Space Engineers is running.
- No unrelated Discord activity prompt appears when you connect to the server.
- Other players’ settings remain unchanged unless they make the same client-side adjustment.
- You understand which feature was disabled: overlay, activity notification, activity sharing, or Steam notification.
- If the message persists, its branding and wording have been checked again before another setting is changed.
Discord’s Game Overlay documentation was updated April 2, 2025. Discord’s Activity Sharing FAQ was updated September 22, 2026. Interface labels can change, but the functional distinction remains: overlay controls govern Discord’s in-game interface, while notification, Registered Games, and Activity Sharing controls govern activity prompts and sharing.
