How to Remove the Back of an HP All-in-One PC Safely

HP All-in-One rear covers vary by model. Identify your exact product, distinguish the port cover from the access panel, and follow the matching service guide.

There is no single back-cover removal procedure for every HP All-in-One. The fasteners, cover design and disassembly order vary by model, so identify your exact HP product name or product number and follow its matching Maintenance and Service Guide before opening the computer. A rear port cover, an access panel and the computer’s larger rear enclosure can be separate parts.

Identify your HP All-in-One and the part you need to remove

Find the full product name or product number on the computer’s label, or in its system information if it still starts. Use that identifier on HP Support to locate the correct documentation. Do not choose instructions or replacement parts based only on screen size or a similar-looking case.

Check the guide’s parts diagram and disassembly section to establish whether you need to remove a rear port cover, an access panel, or the larger rear cover or enclosure. These terms describe different parts on some models, and removing one may be a prerequisite for reaching another.

HP’s guides illustrate why the distinction matters: the EliteOne 800 G3 procedure removes a rear port cover and stand before its main access panel, while the HP 205 G1/G2 and HP 18 guide describes captive screws that release the rear cover directly. These are examples for those models, not interchangeable instructions.

Prepare the computer before opening it

Follow the safety and shutdown instructions in the guide for your exact product. HP’s EliteOne 800 G3 guide directs users to remove media, shut down, disconnect the power adapter after shutdown, remove any cable lock, and disconnect other attached cables. It then instructs users to place the computer face down on a soft, flat surface such as a blanket or towel. Apply that positioning only when your model’s guide calls for it.

HP warns in the EliteOne 800 G3 service guide: “Beware of sharp edges inside the chassis.” Keep the work area clear and avoid touching internal components unnecessarily.

Follow the model-specific removal sequence

  1. Read the matching guide’s disassembly steps in order. Identify the fasteners, release points and any parts—such as a stand or port cover—that must come off first.
  2. Use only the specified tool and release method. For example, the EliteOne 800 G3 guide specifies a T15 tamper-resistant Torx security screwdriver if the rear-port-cover security lock screws are secured. It then directs users to slide the retainer tabs toward each other and pull the port cover toward the bottom of the computer. Do not apply this sequence to another HP model unless its guide says to.
  3. Remove any required preceding parts before the access panel. On the EliteOne 800 G3, HP says to remove the rear port cover and stand first, then lift the access panel at its notches. On the ProOne 600 G3 21-inch, the guide likewise places access-panel removal after the rear port cover and stand; it directs users to pull up at two recessed areas at the panel’s bottom and lift the panel off. These are separate model-specific procedures.
  4. Release captive screws as the guide describes them. For the HP 205 G1/G2 and HP 18, the cited guide describes two captive screws on the bottom of the computer: turn them left until they click and release the rear cover, lift the cover’s bottom edge to disengage it, then lift it off. Do not assume another model uses these screws or releases in the same direction.

Stop if the cover resists or clips begin to break

Do not pry harder, pull against a fastener, or skip a preceding step when a panel will not release. Confirm that you have identified the correct cover and followed the guide’s complete order. Clips can be damaged: HP’s ProOne 600 G4/G5 21.5-inch guide notes that clips or the rear cover may be damaged during removal. It also says that a replacement cover is available for that model and that the webcam must be transferred from the old cover when replacing it. That note does not establish compatibility with other HP computers.

If the panel remains stuck after checking the guide, stop and consult HP support or a repair professional rather than force the cover. Reassemble in the reverse order specified by the same guide, ensuring covers and fasteners are seated as directed before reconnecting power.
