To remove text baked into a picture, select the lettering and a narrow margin around it, then use Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill to replace those pixels with sampled surroundings. Check the result for seams and altered details; use Generative Fill or Content-Aware Patch when the background makes a straightforward fill unsuitable.
Before you start: preserve the original
Text that has been flattened into an image is part of its pixels. This workflow replaces the covered pixels; it does not recover the original background hidden beneath the lettering.

Remove text with Content-Aware Fill
- Select the text. Open the image and use a selection tool such as Object Selection, Quick Selection, Magic Wand, or a lasso. Include the lettering’s antialiased edge and a modest border of surrounding background, but avoid nearby objects or details you want to keep.
- Open Content-Aware Fill. With the selection active, choose Edit > Content-Aware Fill. Photoshop opens a workspace where you can review the proposed sampling area.
- Guide the sampling area. Keep background regions with similar texture, color, lighting, and direction; exclude areas that would introduce unrelated objects or mismatched patterns. The preview helps you judge whether Photoshop is borrowing suitable pixels.
- Apply and inspect. Apply the fill, then examine the edit both at normal viewing size and zoomed in. Adobe’s Content-Aware Fill instructions cover the selection, sampling-area adjustment, and application steps.
If the result has a repeated pattern, blur, halo, or changed nearby detail, undo and try a tighter or more carefully shaped selection, or adjust the sampling area. A different selection can help because the fill depends on what is included and what Photoshop can sample.

Choose another method when the background calls for it

Try Generative Fill for complex scenes
Select the text and surrounding edge, then invoke Generative Fill. Adobe says you can enter a prompt describing the desired result or leave it blank for a fill based on surrounding pixels; Photoshop provides variations to inspect. This is a way to try alternatives, not a guarantee that nearby content will remain unchanged. See Adobe’s Generative Fill instructions.
Generative features use generative credits. Adobe’s live help page lists available models and availability notices, which can change; consult it for current details rather than relying on a fixed model list.

Use Content-Aware Patch when you can choose a good source
With the Content-Aware Patch tool, select the unwanted area and drag it to a clean part of the image with a similar texture or pattern. Adjust Structure and Color if the patch does not follow the pattern or blend naturally. Adobe recommends extending the selection a little beyond the element being removed. For small residual marks, use Spot Healing Brush, Healing Brush, or Clone Stamp on a separate retouching layer. Where suitable, enable Sample All Layers so the tool can draw from the image beneath the cleanup layer. Adobe distinguishes small-object retouching with Spot Healing Brush from larger removals with Content-Aware Fill in its retouching tutorial.

Once the repair looks plausible at both normal and close-up views, save an editable working file. Export a flattened copy only when you need a shareable final image.
