If you shared an active password, API key, access token, or bank credential, revoke or change it at the service that issued it now; deleting a chat cannot make an exposed credential safe again. Then delete the conversation and check for related saved data. Hiding a chat, deleting it, and stopping future use of activity are different actions—and a deletion request may not mean immediate removal from every system.
First, contain the exposure
- Secure anything that can still grant access. Change a password, revoke a token or API key, and contact the issuing bank or service if financial credentials were exposed. Do this before relying on chat deletion.
- Delete the conversation or activity that contains the information. Use the service-specific steps below. Do not archive a conversation when your goal is deletion.
- Look for separate copies and controls. Check relevant file libraries, saved memory or personalization, activity history, and connected-app data. If you created a share link or exported a conversation, review those surfaces separately; the procedures below do not establish that deleting a chat revokes every separately created copy or link.
- Escalate ongoing risks through the right channel. For a compromised account, regulated information, or a work or school account, contact the provider through its official support or privacy process and notify your organization’s security or privacy contact. Do not paste the sensitive material into a support request.
Remove information from ChatGPT
Delete one chat or clear chat history
- Open your chat history and select the conversation’s more-options menu.
- Choose Delete and confirm. To remove multiple conversations, use the archive or delete-all controls in Settings > Data Controls, choosing deletion rather than archiving.
Archiving only removes a conversation from the main history view; it remains saved under the same retention rules as other chats. Deleted conversations cannot be restored.

Check files, connected apps, memory, and future-use settings
- Library files: A file saved separately in ChatGPT’s Library is not deleted when you delete the chat that used it. Remove the Library copy separately if you do not want it retained.
- Connected apps: Deleting a conversation removes connected-app data retained inside that conversation. Disconnecting an app only prevents future access; it does not remove the past conversation.
- Memory and model improvement: OpenAI provides separate controls for memory, model improvement, Temporary Chat, privacy requests, and account deletion. Turning off model improvement does not delete earlier chats, so use the deletion control for past conversations.
Remove Gemini Apps activity and chats
Delete a conversation or selected activity
To delete an individual conversation, remove it from Recent chats. Google says this also deletes related Gemini Apps Activity and content created in that chat, such as Canvas documents and apps.
For activity controls, open Gemini Apps Activity from the profile or menu on mobile, or choose Settings & help > Activity on the web. In the Gemini section of My Activity, you can delete an individual activity item, a day, a custom range, the last hour or day, or all activity.

Understand Keep Activity and connected apps
Turning Keep Activity off changes how future chats are handled; it does not clear activity already saved. With the setting off, future chats do not appear in Activity or get used to train Google’s AI models unless you send feedback. Google may still save conversations with the account temporarily to provide the service, process feedback, and protect Google, its users, and the public.
If Gemini used information from a connected app, deleting or disconnecting that source app alone does not clear Gemini Apps Activity. Delete the relevant chat or activity and disconnect the source app to prevent future access. A source-app deletion or change may take days to affect the Gemini experience, according to Google.

Check account and administrator controls
Google’s Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete default is 18 months; the available alternatives are 3 months, 36 months, or no auto-delete. Some usage data remains until the Google Account is deleted. Google also says activity already reviewed by human reviewers is not removed when you delete Gemini Apps Activity and may be retained for up to three years.

For a work or school account, the Workspace administrator controls Gemini Apps Activity. You may not be able to change retention settings or see the retention duration.

Remove conversations from Claude
Delete an individual conversation
Free and Pro Claude users can delete individual conversations from conversation history. A deleted conversation disappears from the history view immediately; its backend deletion follows Anthropic’s stated retention policy shown below.
Delete the Claude account
Account deletion is permanent and removes access to saved chats. Export anything you need before proceeding. Anthropic’s instructions say Claude Pro subscribers must cancel and wait until the current subscription period ends before deleting the account.

What deletion means after you confirm
A conversation disappearing from the screen is not proof that every related record has already been erased. These are the providers’ published deletion or retention terms, not a promise that all copies vanish on a particular day. The exceptions and other retained data described below matter when deciding whether a deletion request is sufficient.

When deleting a chat is not enough
- You shared a credential that still works: rotate or revoke it even if the conversation is deleted.
- You uploaded a file or used a connected app: check the relevant separate library or activity controls; a chat deletion does not necessarily remove data stored elsewhere.
- You turned off future activity or model use: that setting is not a substitute for deleting past activity.
- You need account-wide removal: account deletion is a separate, consequential action. Export records you need first; account deletion may permanently remove access to services and saved chats.
- You use an organization-managed account or face a continuing threat: settings may be controlled by an administrator, so involve your organization and the provider’s official privacy or support channel.
