If a Samsung phone you own asks for Google account verification after a reset, sign in with the Google account previously used on that phone. If you cannot, recover the account through Google, try any alternate sign-in option or previous screen lock that the setup screen offers, then contact an authorized Samsung service center if you still cannot verify ownership. There is no legitimate owner-facing step that simply skips this theft-protection check.
Why Google verification appears after a reset
Samsung’s Factory Reset Protection (FRP), also called Google Device Protection in Samsung’s US support material, is intended to help protect a device if it is lost or stolen. After a reset, the phone may require the Google account previously registered on it before setup can continue. A reset through the recovery menu can trigger this check; resetting again does not recover the account or remove the requirement. Samsung Australia explains FRP and factory resets.

Work through the recovery steps
1. Identify the Google account previously used
At the verification prompt, try the Google account that was on the phone before it was reset. If you have more than one, Samsung suggests checking which account lists the device. Do not assume that any Google account you currently use will satisfy the check; it needs to be the account previously linked to the phone. See Samsung’s Google Device Protection guidance.

2. Recover the account with Google
If you have forgotten the username, password, or cannot access a verification code, use Google’s account recovery flow. Follow its prompts and answer as accurately as possible. Google may ask questions to establish that the account is yours; Samsung cannot substitute for that account check.

Google warns: “We don’t work with any service that claims to provide account or password support.” Do not pay a third party claiming it can recover your Google account, and do not share your password or verification codes with anyone.
3. Try another 2-Step Verification method
If you know the password but the usual second step is unavailable, Google lists alternatives that may already be configured for your account: a phone where you are still signed in, another registered phone number, saved backup codes, a hardware security key, or a passkey on another device. Check Google’s 2-Step Verification troubleshooting guidance. If none is available, return to account recovery. A work or school account may require help from its administrator.

4. Use a previous screen lock only if setup offers it
Some Samsung devices may offer the screen-lock method previously configured on the phone, depending on Android version. This is not a universal alternative to Google sign-in. Follow the exact options shown on your phone; if no screen-lock option appears, proceed with Google account recovery. Samsung describes this device-dependent option in its US support guidance.
5. Contact Samsung-authorized service if you remain locked out
If you cannot complete Google verification after trying account recovery, contact an authorized Samsung service center and ask what proof of purchase and device information are required in your country. Samsung recommends service escalation when verification cannot be completed; it does not promise an instant unlock. Regional instructions differ, so check your local Samsung support guidance. Samsung UK advises bringing proof of purchase and notes that a newly reset Google password may take 24 hours or longer before it works to unlock the device; that timing is UK guidance, not a universal Google guarantee. What not to do
- Do not reset the phone again expecting verification to disappear. A recovery-menu reset can bring up the same account check.
- Do not use paid FRP-bypass tools or account-recovery services. They do not provide the legitimate Google or Samsung ownership-verification route, and Google warns against sharing passwords and verification codes.
- Do not assume every Galaxy has the same prompts. Options and service requirements vary by model, Android version, and country. Follow the on-screen instructions and ask local Samsung support when an option described here is absent.
