For a rusty bare cast-iron grill grate, gently scrub off surface rust with a brush or scrubber approved by the grate’s manufacturer, wash only if needed, dry it completely, then apply a thin coat of high-temperature oil and reseason it according to the manual. First check whether the grate is bare cast iron or porcelain-coated: the wrong tool can damage a coated surface.
Identify the grate before cleaning
Check the grill model and care manual to confirm whether the cooking surface is bare cast iron or porcelain-coated cast iron. These surfaces do not necessarily share the same care instructions. Weber cautions that sharp tools can damage the porcelain enamel on its coated grates and expose the surface to corrosion; follow that guidance for the applicable Weber grates, not as a universal rule for every grate. Remove rust from compatible bare cast iron
1. Scrub gently with an approved tool
For minor surface rust, Napoleon recommends gentle scrubbing. Its guidance for cast-iron grids identifies brass or wood-fiber brushes as suitable and says not to use a stainless-steel brush. Lodge, by contrast, recommends a nylon scrubber for its Sportsman’s Pro cast-iron grate. These different examples are a reason to check your grate maker’s instructions rather than assume one brush type is right for all cast iron. If the grids are particularly dirty, Napoleon allows washing with soap and warm water. Dry them thoroughly and reseason promptly. Lodge also advises prompt drying after washing its Sportsman’s Pro grate. Napoleon’s cleaning instructions; Lodge’s care instructions.

3. Oil and heat to reseason
Napoleon’s procedure is to coat both sides with a thin layer of high-temperature oil, such as shortening, flaxseed oil, or canola oil, then heat the grids at 350–400°F for 30–60 minutes. Napoleon specifies that this is its own process and says to keep the temperature below the oil’s smoke point; the publication year is not stated on the reviewed page. What if the rust is more than minor?
Napoleon’s gentle-scrubbing directions address minor rust. Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove describes other approaches for rust on outdoor grills, including a vinegar-and-salt soak for significant rust and a baking-soda method. Keep rust from returning
- Keep cast-iron grids clean and dry, and apply a light protective coat of cooking oil if the manufacturer recommends it.
- Store the grate in a dry place. Lodge recommends dry storage for its cast-iron grill; Broil King advises storing clean, dry grids somewhere dry and warm, with cooking oil applied for extended storage. Broil King’s rust and storage FAQ; Lodge’s care instructions.
- Inspect grill brushes for loose bristles. Napoleon warns that swallowed bristles can be dangerous and says to replace a brush when it begins shedding them. Napoleon’s brush safety guidance.
For routine food residue—not rust—Lodge chef Kris offers a separate tip: while the grill is still hot, loosely crumple aluminum foil and use tongs to rub it over the grate.
