How to Remove Pre-Installed Apps on iPhone and Android

A practical guide to removing pre-installed apps: hide iPhone icons, delete eligible apps, uninstall Android downloads, and disable system apps safely.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The correct action depends on what you mean by “remove.” On an iPhone, Remove from Home Screen hides an app but keeps it in the App Library; Delete App removes an eligible app from the phone. On Android, a downloaded app can usually be uninstalled, while a pre-installed system app may offer Disable instead. Some built-in apps cannot be deleted on either platform.

Before changing anything, identify whether the app is merely a shortcut you do not want to see, an app you want deleted, or a system component that the phone will only let you disable. The available controls vary by iOS version, region, Android version, manufacturer and model.

“Remove” can produce three different results. Pick the row that matches your goal before touching the app’s settings.

Goal iPhone Android Main consequence
Clear the icon but keep access Use Remove from Home Screen. Use the launcher’s hide or remove-shortcut control if your manufacturer provides one. The app remains available; this is not an uninstall.
Delete an app Use Delete App when that option is offered. Use Uninstall for an app you installed. The app is removed. Related data can also be removed.
Turn off a pre-installed system app There is no universal iPhone equivalent for every built-in app; Apple allows deletion of some, but not all. Use Disable when the phone does not allow deletion. The system app is turned off; Android warns that other apps may misbehave and associated data is deleted.

Do not assume that an option missing from your screen is hidden elsewhere. It may be unavailable for that app, blocked by a restriction, or omitted by the phone maker.

How to identify the app’s status

Think about when the app appeared. An app you downloaded from the App Store or Google Play is normally treated as a user-installed app. An app that was present when you first set up the phone is more likely to be built in or supplied by the manufacturer, although an earlier owner or setup process may also have installed it. The app’s information screen and the controls it exposes are more reliable than its name alone.

Do not judge the action by the icon disappearing. A launcher can remove a shortcut while leaving the package installed, and an iPhone Home Screen can be rearranged without changing the app itself. Confirm the result in App Library or the phone’s installed-app list.

Removing an app from an iPhone Home Screen without deleting it

Use this when you want a cleaner Home Screen but may still need the app. The app stays in App Library and can be opened from there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Touch and hold the app icon on the Home Screen.
  2. Tap Remove App.
  3. Tap Remove from Home Screen.

The icon disappears from the Home Screen, but the app remains installed. Swipe left past your Home Screen pages to reach App Library, then search for the app or open its category.

This is often the lowest-risk choice for an app you rarely open, an Apple app another feature may use, or an app you might need later. It changes visibility rather than app data or system configuration.

Deleting from App Library

If the app is already only in App Library, touch and hold its icon there, tap Delete App, and confirm. This is a deletion, not merely a layout change, and it is available only when Apple permits that app to be deleted.

If you cannot find an app, use App Library search rather than assuming it was deleted. A Home Screen page can also be hidden while its apps remain installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deleting an eligible iPhone app

For an app that can be removed, use the same initial menu but choose deletion:

  1. Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen or in App Library.
  2. Tap Remove App if that menu appears.
  3. Tap Delete App.
  4. Confirm the deletion when iPhone asks.

Apple says deleting a built-in app also removes related user data and configuration files. Depending on the app, that can change or remove features that rely on it. Check what the app supports before confirming, especially if it stores information you still need.

Deletion is different from signing out, hiding an icon or removing a widget. If the app holds information that is not already synchronized or copied elsewhere, preserve it first. The confirmation prompt is the point to stop if you are unsure what will be affected.

Why a built-in iPhone app may not have Delete App

Apple does not make every built-in app removable. The eligible set depends on the iOS release and, in some cases, your region. Apple also notes that additional built-in apps may be deletable in the European Union, so a result seen on one phone or in one country is not a universal list.

If the app is not an Apple built-in app, deletion can also be blocked by parental controls. A phone managed by an organization’s mobile-device-management system may restrict app deletion as well. On a supervised or family-managed phone, the missing button can therefore be a policy decision rather than a fault.

For that reason, avoid relying on a generic list of “all removable Apple apps” unless it names the applicable iOS release and region. Apple can change the eligible set, and the same model can show different controls after a software update or in a different country.

When you need to block use rather than delete

If the purpose is to stop access, review Settings > Screen Time and its app-use restrictions instead of trying to remove a system component. Screen Time controls can be appropriate when deletion is unavailable or when the phone must retain the app for another feature.

Blocking use and deleting are separate decisions. A managed family phone or organization-owned iPhone may require the administrator or family organizer to change the restriction. Do not interpret a missing deletion button as evidence that the app is malfunctioning.

Removing a downloaded app on Android

Google’s documented Play Store route applies to an app you installed yourself. Menu wording can vary slightly with Android versions, and Google notes that some steps apply only on Android 13 and later.

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon.
  3. Choose Manage apps & devices.
  4. Open Manage.
  5. Select the app you want to remove.
  6. Tap Uninstall and confirm.

If the app does not appear in this list, verify that you are viewing installed apps and that you selected the same Google account used to install it. You can also look for an uninstall control on the app’s information page in your phone’s Settings, but the exact path and labels are manufacturer-specific.

Google Play management is intended for apps installed through the account and device. A manufacturer app, carrier component or other system package may appear in Settings but not offer the same uninstall action. Treat the button shown for that particular app as the authoritative choice.

What uninstalling does and does not mean

Uninstall removes a user-installed app through the supported Android management flow. It is not the same as removing an icon from the launcher, clearing the app’s cache, or signing out of an account. If you reinstall the app later, whether its previous information returns depends on the app and its own storage or account behavior; do not assume that uninstall preserves local data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before confirming, check whether the app contains drafts, downloads or other information you need. The platform instructions establish the removal route, but they do not promise a particular amount of storage recovered for every app.

Disabling a pre-installed Android system app

Google states: “You can’t delete some system apps that came pre-installed on your Android phone.” On phones that support it, the alternative is Disable. A disabled system app is turned off and no longer appears in the app list, but the control is not offered for every component.

Find the Disable control

Because Android manufacturers organize Settings differently, start with the phone’s app-management screen. Common labels include Settings > Apps, Apps & notifications or See all apps. Select the pre-installed app and look for Disable. If you do not see it, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model rather than applying another phone’s menu sequence.

  1. Open the phone’s Settings.
  2. Open the section that lists installed apps, such as Apps or Apps & notifications.
  3. Choose the system app.
  4. Read the warning and tap Disable only if you understand the effect.
  5. Confirm the choice if the phone asks.

Some system apps are required by the operating system and expose neither Uninstall nor Disable. Do not treat the absence of a button as an invitation to use unofficial rooting or package-removal tools; those methods are outside Google’s supported instructions and can create separate reliability and security problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What disabling changes

Google warns that disabling a system app can make other apps misbehave. It also deletes associated app data. Save anything important from that app first, and consider which phone functions, accounts or other apps might depend on it. A pre-installed app that looks unnecessary may provide a service used by another feature.

Disabling may also remove the app from the normal app list without removing every underlying system component. The practical result is that the app is turned off, not that the phone has been converted into a device without that system package. Use the supported control and read the warning rather than inferring more than the phone states.

If the app’s information page later offers Enable, that is the phone’s built-in way to turn it back on. The exact recovery screen and wording vary by manufacturer, so follow the on-screen instructions for your model.

Re-enabling is the sensible first response if a dependent feature stops working. If you cannot locate Enable, search Settings for the app name or ask the manufacturer for model-specific instructions.

iPhone and Android: the practical differences

Question iPhone Android
Can every pre-installed app be deleted? No. Apple identifies built-in apps that can be deleted and says some cannot. Availability can also depend on iOS version and region. No. Google says some pre-installed system apps cannot be deleted.
What is the safest way to hide an icon? Remove from Home Screen; the app remains in App Library. Use a launcher-provided hide or shortcut-removal feature when available; labels differ by manufacturer.
What is the normal deletion path? Touch and hold > Remove App > Delete App, if offered. For a user-installed app: Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Manage > app > Uninstall.
What replaces deletion for a system app? There is no single replacement for every Apple built-in app; some must remain. Disable, where the manufacturer exposes it.
What data or features may be affected? Deleting a built-in app removes related user data and configuration files and can affect linked functionality. Disabling deletes associated app data and may cause other apps to misbehave.
Why do instructions differ? iOS version, region and restrictions such as Screen Time or device management. Android version, manufacturer, model and whether the app is user-installed or a system component.

The key comparison is control, not brand preference. iPhone gives a clear distinction between removing an icon and deleting an eligible app. Android separates uninstalling a downloaded app from disabling a protected system app, but the manufacturer decides how prominently those controls appear.

Neither platform promises that every pre-installed item can be removed or that removal produces a fixed storage saving. A result that is possible on one phone may be unavailable after an operating-system update, in another region or on another manufacturer’s model.

A safe decision process before you tap Delete or Disable

1. Identify who supplied the app

If you downloaded it, treat it as a normal app and look for Uninstall on Android or Delete App on iPhone. If it shipped with the phone, expect platform restrictions and look for Disable on Android or check whether Apple permits deletion.

2. Decide whether visibility is the real problem

For an occasional nuisance, hiding the icon avoids data and feature changes. On iPhone, use Remove from Home Screen. On Android, use the launcher’s own hide or shortcut control if your model has one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check for information you need

Apple warns that deleting a built-in app removes related user data and configuration files. Google warns that disabling a system app deletes associated data. Export, copy or otherwise preserve anything important before proceeding.

4. Consider dependencies

Ask whether another app, account, accessory or phone feature might call the component you are changing. Android specifically warns of misbehaving dependent apps; Apple warns that built-in-app deletion can affect system functionality.

5. Check restrictions and ownership

On iPhone, Screen Time, parental controls or organizational device management can remove the deletion option. On Android, the manufacturer and the system image determine whether a pre-installed package can be disabled. If the phone belongs to an employer, school or family organizer, the administrator may need to make the change.

6. Use the supported control shown on your device

Do not force a deletion when the operating system does not offer it. A missing control is evidence that the platform, manufacturer or administrator has restricted that action.

7. Record what you changed

If you disable a system app, note its name and the date. That makes it easier to reverse the change when a feature later depends on it. If the phone offers Enable, use that supported recovery action before attempting anything more drastic.

Troubleshooting when removal does not work

The iPhone still shows the app after I removed it

Check which option you selected. Remove from Home Screen intentionally leaves the app installed in App Library. To delete it, find it in App Library, touch and hold it, choose Delete App, and confirm—provided that option is available.

There is no Delete App option on iPhone

The app may be a built-in app Apple does not allow you to delete, or your iOS version or region may not support deletion for it. If it is a non-Apple app, review Screen Time restrictions. A device managed by an organization may also block deletion. If your goal is simply to prevent use, adjust Screen Time controls instead.

Android shows Uninstall for one app but not another

The first app is likely user-installed, while the second is a pre-installed system app or a component protected by the manufacturer. Open the second app’s information page in Settings and look for Disable. If neither control exists, use the manufacturer’s model-specific support instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disabling an Android app caused another feature to fail

Return to the app’s information page and look for Enable to restore it. If the option or location is unclear, consult the manufacturer for the exact model. This is why Google recommends checking an app’s role and saving needed information before disabling it.

The Android menu in a guide does not match my phone

Android instructions are not universal. Labels and locations change with the manufacturer and Android version. Use Settings search for “Apps” or the app’s name, then follow the controls displayed on your device rather than assuming another model has the same sequence.

The app is absent from the Play Store management list

That usually means the app is not being managed as a user-installed Play app, or you are viewing a different account or filter. Open its Settings app-information page and inspect the available action. If it is a protected system component, Google’s supported alternative may be Disable, or there may be no user-facing removal control.

The app returned after an update or reset

A system update, manufacturer configuration or device reset can restore or re-enable built-in components. Recheck whether the current phone offers Disable or whether the icon is simply present in the launcher again. Do not assume that a previous result applies after a software or regional change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing a hidden icon with deletion: on iPhone, removing an icon from the Home Screen leaves the app in App Library.
  • Assuming every Apple built-in app is removable: Apple explicitly says some cannot be deleted, with availability also affected by version and region.
  • Calling every Android pre-install an uninstallable app: system components may expose only Disable—or neither control.
  • Skipping the data warning: iPhone built-in-app deletion removes related data and configuration files; Android disabling deletes associated data.
  • Copying another model’s Android instructions: the manufacturer and Android release can change both the menu path and the available action.
  • Using deletion to solve an access problem: Screen Time restrictions on iPhone may be the better answer when the app must remain for system functionality.
  • Promising a fixed storage gain: official guidance does not establish a universal amount of space recovered.
  • Using unsupported removal tools: rooting or package-removal utilities are not part of the supported steps and can introduce separate reliability and security issues.

What to expect after the change

After an iPhone Home Screen removal, the app remains reachable through App Library. After an eligible iPhone deletion, the app and the related data and configuration files covered by Apple’s warning are removed, and linked functionality may change.

After an Android uninstall, the user-installed app is removed through Google Play’s management flow. After an Android disable, the system app is turned off and no longer appears in the app list; associated data is deleted, and dependent apps may not behave normally. The exact presentation and recovery controls depend on the phone maker.

These actions are settings operations, not a guarantee of a particular storage saving. Neither Apple’s nor Google’s cited guidance establishes a universal amount of space recovered, so do not rely on a promised number.

If the result is not what you intended, stop and identify which control you used. On iPhone, a hidden app can remain in App Library; on Android, a disabled app may be restored with Enable. Reversing a supported setting is safer than trying to remove a protected package by another method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete every pre-installed app on an iPhone?

No. Apple allows deletion of some built-in apps but says others cannot be deleted. The available set can depend on the iOS version and region, and Apple notes that additional built-in apps may be deletable in the European Union.

Does Remove from Home Screen delete an iPhone app?

No. It removes the icon from the Home Screen while keeping the app installed in App Library. To delete an eligible app, choose Delete App instead.

Why is Delete App missing on my iPhone?

The app may be a built-in Apple app that is not removable, or deletion may be restricted by iOS version, region, Screen Time, parental controls or organizational device management.

How do I uninstall an Android app I downloaded?

In Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps & devices, open Manage, select the app and tap Uninstall. Labels can vary with Android versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if an Android pre-installed app has no Uninstall button?

Open the app’s information page in Settings and look for Disable. Some system apps cannot be deleted, and some phones do not allow them to be disabled either.

Is disabling an Android system app safe?

It can affect other apps, and Google warns that associated app data is deleted. Check the app’s role and preserve needed information first. If a feature fails, look for Enable on the app’s information page.

Why do Android removal instructions differ from one phone to another?

Manufacturers customize Settings, and the Android version and model affect both menu labels and available controls. Use instructions for your exact phone or contact its manufacturer.

Will removing a pre-installed app free a guaranteed amount of storage?

No universal storage amount is established by the platform guidance. Hiding an icon does not delete the app, and disabling a system app is not the same as removing every system component.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

The Bottom Line

On iPhone, choose Remove from Home Screen when you only want to hide an icon, and choose Delete App only when Apple offers it and you have checked the data and feature consequences. On Android, uninstall apps you installed through Google Play; for protected pre-installed apps, use Disable only when your phone provides it and you understand the warning. Version, region, manufacturer, model and device-management rules determine what is possible.
