How to Fix a Phone That Won’t Charge on a Qi Wireless Charger

First confirm that your exact phone model supports Qi wireless charging. Then test it without its case or attachments, clear the charging surfaces, reposition it slowly, check the charger’s power connection and compatibility, and let the phone cool if it is warm. If it still will not charge on a known-compatible charger after those checks, contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider. A Qi charger cannot charge a phone without a wireless charging receiver, and the right position and charger depend on the specific phone and pad.

Why a Qi charger may not charge your phone

Wireless charging works only when the phone has a compatible receiver and that receiver lines up with the charger’s transmitting coil. A case, metal accessory, misplaced phone, weak or interrupted power supply, incompatible charger, or heat protection can prevent charging or make it stop and start. These causes can look alike, so work through the checks in order rather than assuming the battery or charging coil has failed.

The guidance below applies to Qi wireless charging, but details vary by phone model, charger design, and region. The manufacturers’ support pages cited by name are Samsung’s US wireless-charging guidance and regional support guidance, Google Pixel Help, and Xiaomi Global support. Samsung’s regional support page was updated April 27, 2026; the other pages consulted did not display a publication date. None of these general checks can identify a fault in an individual phone without its model and symptoms.

Start with the symptoms

Before changing accessories, note exactly what happens. Does the phone show a charging indicator and then stop? Does it never recognize the pad? Is charging merely slower than expected? Does the phone or pad become hot? Does moving the phone by a few millimeters make a difference? Does the problem occur with one pad or every compatible pad?

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

These observations help separate a positioning or accessory problem from a phone-side problem, but they do not prove which component has failed. A phone that charges intermittently may be misaligned, shifting on a sloped stand, reacting to a case or metal object, losing power through its adapter, or pausing because of heat. Treat the symptoms as clues and use a controlled test rather than guessing.

1. Check whether your exact phone supports wireless charging

Look up the full model name and number in the manufacturer’s specifications or support materials. Do not assume that a phone supports wireless charging because it belongs to a particular brand or looks similar to another model. If the phone has no wireless receiver, changing pads, adapters, or alignment will not make a Qi charger work.

For example, Google’s Pixel guidance says wireless charging is available on Pixel 3 and later with listed exceptions; it also distinguishes newer Qi2-capable models from earlier generations. Samsung’s current US compatibility guidance says Galaxy A, XCover, and Tab families do not support wireless charging, while listing compatible Galaxy families. These are examples, not exhaustive lists for every manufacturer or every model year: verify the exact device before proceeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the model designation in the phone’s settings, on its original packaging, or on the manufacturer’s support page rather than relying on a retailer category. A family name can contain both wireless-charging and non-wireless-charging models. The same caution applies to Qi2: a phone may support ordinary Qi charging without supporting every Qi2 feature, and a Qi2-capable accessory does not add a receiver to an unsupported phone.

If the official specifications do not list wireless charging, stop troubleshooting the pad as though the phone were compatible. A wired charging port, a similar-looking sibling model, or a brand’s premium reputation is not evidence that the particular phone accepts Qi power.

2. Remove anything between the phone and charger

Take off the case for the first test. Remove wallets, cards, magnetic rings, ring holders, metal plates, and other attachments, and check both the back of the phone and the charger surface for debris. Even if the phone appears to sit flat, an object or case can interfere with the connection.

Cases are not interchangeable in their effect. Google says thick or metallic Pixel cases—including cases with magnets or ring holders—can affect or stop charging. It also notes that a non-Qi2 case can affect charging on supported newer Pixel models. Samsung’s current US guidance gives a maximum thickness of 5 mm for non-Samsung cases; that is Samsung-specific guidance, not a universal Qi case limit. If the phone charges bare but not in its case, check the phone and case makers’ compatibility guidance before deciding whether to replace the case.

Do not test by leaving just one suspected item in place. Remove everything, confirm that the bare phone charges, and then add accessories back one at a time if you need to identify the culprit. A wallet case can contain cards or a metal shield even when its exterior does not look metallic. A ring holder or magnetic plate may also change the distance between the coils.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Inspect the pad for grit, stickers, protective film, or objects left on its surface. Inspect the phone’s back as well, but do not scrape or open the device. The purpose of this step is to create a clean, bare-phone baseline, not to modify the hardware.

3. Find the phone’s charging coil position

Place the back of the phone against the charging surface, then move it slowly until the phone indicates charging. Centering the phone is a useful starting point, but it is not a guarantee: the coil may sit away from the visual center, and different pads can have different coil layouts. Consult the manuals for both devices if the charging area is unclear.

Samsung’s support guidance illustrates the issue with the Galaxy Z Fold8: its coil is near the bottom, so placing the phone by visual center may miss the charging area. Samsung also notes that third-party pads can have different coil structures and that a sloped pad can make alignment harder. For foldables, follow the model’s instructions; Samsung advises closing Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip phones with the rear facing the charger.

Misalignment can cause more than a complete failure. Samsung states, “Improper alignment may cause the device to charge slowly, stop charging, or overheat.” If a charging indicator appears only at one position, or charging stops when the phone shifts, alignment or the pad’s coil layout may be involved.

Use a deliberate alignment test:

  1. Remove the case and place the phone’s back against the pad.
  2. Start near the pad’s suggested center or marked charging area.
  3. Move the phone a small distance at a time in different directions.
  4. Wait for the charging indicator at each position rather than sliding it rapidly.
  5. Once charging starts, leave the phone still for several minutes and observe whether it remains connected.

A stand can make this harder if the phone slides, leans, or rests at an angle. A flat pad may be easier for a first diagnosis, but the important factor is reliable coil alignment, not the shape of the accessory. If one position works only briefly, repeat the test without a case and on a second compatible pad if one is available.

4. Check the entire power path and charger compatibility

A pad that is not receiving power cannot charge the phone, even if the phone is positioned correctly. Check the outlet, the charger’s cable, and its adapter. Use the cable and adapter intended for the pad, and try another working outlet. If available, compare with a second charger that is known to support the exact phone.

Check each connection rather than assuming the pad itself is defective. Confirm that the adapter is connected to the outlet, that the cable is firmly connected to the adapter and pad, and that the outlet operates with another device. If the pad has an indicator, note whether it behaves differently when the phone is placed on it, but do not treat a light alone as proof of correct charging.

Do not choose a charger by its advertised wattage alone. Basic charging compatibility, certification, and fast-charging support are separate questions. Google directs Pixel users to the Wireless Power Consortium’s product database to check Qi certification, and notes that charging speed depends on both the charger’s output and the phone’s support. Samsung says third-party charger coil structures may interrupt charging and that fast wireless charging requires Samsung and WPC certification.

Some model-specific charging limits show why compatibility matters. Google’s current Pixel Help page says older Qi 1.x chargers still work with Pixel 10 and later, except Pixel 10a, at up to 5 W. That statement is limited to those named Pixel models; it should not be applied to other phones. Samsung’s current US guidance describes fast wireless charging up to 15 W with Qi2-certified covers and MPP chargers in the Samsung scenario described on that page. Confirm support for the exact phone and accessory rather than treating that figure as a general Qi speed.

Certification and speed should therefore be checked separately. A certified basic Qi pad may charge a supported phone without providing the model’s fastest rate. Conversely, a pad with a high maximum output may not deliver that output to a phone that does not support it. Look for the phone maker’s stated standard, the charger’s certification information, and the adapter requirements together.

5. Let a hot phone cool before trying again

If the phone feels hot, remove it from the pad, stop demanding apps or games, and let it cool in a ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Do not continue charging if the phone or an object on the pad becomes unusually hot. Remove any metal object before retrying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charging can slow or pause as a protective response, rather than because the connection has failed. Google says a warm Pixel may pause charging and resume after it cools. Samsung’s regional support guidance says high temperature can reduce or stop charging performance. Xiaomi explains that foreign-object detection may slow or stop magnetic wireless charging when metal objects create a heating risk. These protections vary by device and charger; do not treat heat-related behavior as proof of a particular failed component.

For a controlled retry, move the phone to a cool, ventilated location, close demanding apps, and wait until it no longer feels unusually warm. Keep the pad clear of coins, keys, cards with metal elements, and other objects. Do not cover a hot phone or pad with bedding or clothing while it is charging. If the same heat behavior returns immediately on a bare phone and a compatible charger, stop repeated tests and seek manufacturer guidance.

6. Check for software updates and built-in diagnostics

If a Galaxy phone disconnects from wireless charging or the issue began after an update, check whether a later software update is available. An update may be relevant to a software-related problem, but it cannot be assumed to repair an unsupported phone, incompatible charger, or hardware fault.

Samsung’s regional support page gives this Samsung Members diagnostic route: Get help → Diagnostics → View tests → Wireless charging. Menu names and availability can vary by model and software version. If you do not see that test, use the diagnostic options available on your phone or follow the manufacturer’s support instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record what the diagnostic reports and when the failure occurs. Tell support whether the phone was bare, cool, aligned, and connected to a known-compatible charger. That information is more useful than reporting only that “wireless charging does not work.” Do not repeatedly install updates or reset settings as a substitute for checking compatibility and physical interference.

7. Decide whether a replacement charger is appropriate

Consider another pad only after checking the phone’s support, removing case interference, testing alignment, and confirming the power supply. A new charger will not fix a phone that lacks wireless charging support or an internal phone fault. If you need another charger, evaluate the match rather than buying the highest advertised wattage.

  • Phone support: Confirm the exact model’s Qi or Qi2 capability and supported charging speeds.
  • Charger standard and certification: Check the standard and certification relevant to the phone’s stated support.
  • Coil position and form: Consider whether a flat pad, stand, or vehicle mount will let you position that phone reliably.
  • Case fit: Verify that the case and any magnetic or alignment features are compatible with the specific phone and charger.
  • Power accessories: Confirm which adapter and cable the charger requires, and use an appropriate power source.

A Qi2-compatible case may matter for a particular device that requires or benefits from Qi2 alignment, but this is model-dependent. Check the phone and accessory specifications together; do not assume that buying a new case or pad solves every charging problem.

When comparing replacement pads, ask five practical questions: Does the pad’s certified standard match the phone? Does it include, or require a separate, appropriate adapter and cable? Will its coil layout suit the phone’s coil location? Will the phone remain stable on the chosen flat pad or stand? Can the case remain on without blocking charging? These questions are more meaningful than a maximum wattage printed on the box.

A phone-compatible Qi wireless charging pad can be a sensible purchase when the existing pad fails a power or compatibility check. It is not a remedy for an unsupported model, a blocked receiver, or a phone that fails on multiple known-compatible chargers. Buy only after the controlled bare-phone test establishes that a replacement accessory is the likely missing link.

8. When to contact the manufacturer or repair service

Escalate if the phone supports wireless charging and still fails when it is bare, cool, correctly positioned, and connected to a compatible charger with a working power supply. Samsung recommends a service center or repair request after its troubleshooting steps; Google directs users with unresolved charging or power issues to support. Use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or an authorized service provider, and describe which controlled checks you tried.

Include the exact phone model, the charger and adapter models if known, whether wired charging works, whether the failure is constant or intermittent, and whether the phone becomes hot. Explain whether the phone displays a charging icon, pauses after starting, or never recognizes the pad. This does not diagnose the component, but it gives the service team the information needed to choose the right next test.

Do not open the phone or replace an internal coil based only on these symptoms. A failed charge does not establish whether the problem is the phone, battery, receiver, pad, or power accessories. A model-specific diagnosis is needed before repair. If a foreign object or phone becomes unusually hot, stop using the setup until the manufacturer advises you.

A quick order for troubleshooting

  1. Confirm wireless charging support for the exact phone model.
  2. Remove the case, wallet, cards, magnets, metal attachments, and debris.
  3. Place the phone back-down and move it slowly to find the coil alignment.
  4. Check the pad’s cable, adapter, outlet, certification, and phone compatibility.
  5. If the phone is hot, stop charging and let it cool before retrying.
  6. Check applicable software updates or manufacturer diagnostics.
  7. If the controlled test still fails, contact the phone maker or authorized service.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the brand is enough: Wireless charging varies within a brand and product family. Verify the exact model.
  • Testing through a thick case: A case can conceal cards, metal, magnets, or a ring holder that interrupts charging.
  • Using visual centering as a rule: The receiver may sit away from the phone’s apparent center, especially on a foldable.
  • Buying by wattage: Output, certification, phone support, and fast-charging support are separate specifications.
  • Ignoring the adapter: A correctly aligned phone cannot charge if the pad, cable, adapter, or outlet is not supplying power.
  • Continuing while hot: Heat protection may pause charging, and a metal object can create a heating risk.
  • Declaring a failed battery too soon: These checks cannot identify a failed battery, receiver, coil, or pad without model-specific diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my phone charge wirelessly only when I remove the case?

The case may be too thick, metallic, magnetic, or fitted with a ring holder or metal plate. Google says those features can affect or stop Pixel charging, and Samsung gives 5 mm as guidance for non-Samsung cases on its devices. Verify the exact phone-and-case compatibility rather than treating 5 mm as a universal Qi rule.

Does every phone from a major brand support Qi charging?

No. Support is model-specific. Google lists Pixel generations and exceptions, while Samsung says Galaxy A, XCover, and Tab families are not wirelessly chargeable in its compatibility guidance. Check the exact model’s official specifications.

Why does the phone show charging and then stop?

Misalignment, a shifting phone, a different coil layout, an incompatible accessory, interrupted power, or heat protection can all cause stop-and-start behavior. Remove the case, align the bare phone slowly, verify the complete power path, and let a hot phone cool.

Can I use any high-wattage wireless charger?

Do not choose by wattage alone. Check the charger’s Qi or Qi2 certification, the phone’s supported standard and speed, the coil layout, and the required adapter and cable. A high advertised output does not guarantee that your model will receive that speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I position a phone on a Qi pad?

Start with the manufacturer’s suggested charging area, then move the phone gradually until the charging indicator appears. The coil may not be visually centered; Samsung notes that the Galaxy Z Fold8 coil is near the bottom. Follow model-specific instructions for foldables.

Why does wireless charging stop when my phone is hot?

Phones and chargers may slow or pause charging to protect against heat. Google says a warm Pixel may pause and resume after cooling, while Samsung and Xiaomi describe reduced charging or foreign-object protection in high-temperature conditions. Remove the phone from the pad, stop demanding apps, and let it cool in ventilation.

Should I buy a new pad if my phone will not charge?

Only after confirming that the phone supports wireless charging, testing it bare and correctly aligned, and checking the existing pad’s cable, adapter, outlet, and compatibility. A new pad cannot add a receiver to an unsupported phone or repair an internal fault.

When should I contact the manufacturer?

Contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider when a supported phone still fails bare, cool, correctly positioned, and connected to a known-compatible charger. Provide the model, charger details, symptoms, heat behavior, and diagnostics results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Verify the exact phone model first, then test it bare, clear all metal and magnetic accessories, find the coil alignment, check the pad’s cable, adapter, outlet and certification, and let the phone cool if necessary. If a supported phone still fails those controlled checks on a compatible charger, stop replacing accessories at random and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
