Each step changes a different layer of exposure, and none guarantees that every copy disappears permanently.
Understand what must be removed
First identify where each item is actually published. The live source may be an account or page you control, a third-party website, a Google result, or a people-search/data-broker profile. Search your name, phone number, email address and current or former addresses, then record the exact URL and the information shown.

1. Remove information at the original source
Pages and accounts you control
Delete the post, profile field, account, document or listing yourself. Check privacy settings and old accounts, not just your current public profile. Keep the deletion confirmation or a screenshot for your records.

Pages controlled by someone else
Ask the site owner, publisher or administrator to remove or correct the information. Use the site’s privacy, abuse or legal-removal form when available, and include the precise URL and the exact data to be removed. Google’s guidance explains why source-page removal is different from removing a Search result: Google’s web-result removal guidance.

If the owner removes or edits the page, Google may continue showing an old snippet temporarily. Request a refresh through Google’s outdated-content removal process.
2. Request removal from Google Search
Use Google’s Results about you feature to monitor for eligible contact details or specified private identifiers and submit requests for matching results. Google asks for the result URL and the information as it appears. Review status in the tool after submitting.

Google evaluates every request under its current policies. It can decline a result when it determines that the information has substantial public-interest value. An approved request hides the result from Google Search; it does not erase the underlying webpage. As Google states, “When you remove a result that shows your personal info from Google Search, it doesn’t mean that the info is gone from the internet.”

3. Opt out of people-search and data-broker sites
People-search companies compile information from brokers, public social profiles and government public records. The Federal Trade Commission’s people-search guidance recommends a site-by-site do-it-yourself process.
- Search the site using the name, phone number or address shown in its profile.
- Open the matching profile and copy its exact URL or record identifier.
- Find the site’s “opt out,” “remove my information” or privacy-request instructions.
- Submit the request through the site’s actual procedure. A site may ask for identity verification; provide only information reasonably needed to match the listing, and avoid sending extra documents.
- Save the confirmation, request date and any deadline for follow-up.
- Repeat for every site where a listing appears.
An opt-out generally stops that service from selling or displaying certain existing information; it does not delete the government or other public record behind it. Your details may still appear in a relative’s, neighbor’s or associate’s profile, and changed public records can cause a listing to return. Recheck periodically and submit a new request when it does.

4. California: use DROP for registered brokers
California residents have an additional bulk-request option. A California Attorney General notice dated February 18, 2026, says the state’s DROP tool can send one deletion request to more than 500 registered data brokers: California Attorney General announcement.
DROP is California-specific and its stated scope is registered brokers. It is not a universal way to erase every online record, remove every Google result or delete nonregistered websites. Verify the current eligibility, instructions and broker coverage in the official tool before submitting.

Choose a practical removal strategy

Keep a removal log and recheck
Use a private spreadsheet or notes file with these fields:
- Source or profile URL
- Website owner or broker name
- Type of information exposed
- Date submitted
- Confirmation number or email
- Response and completion date
- Next check date
After a source confirms deletion, revisit the original URL, search the exact exposed detail in Google, and check the relevant broker profile again. Repeat requests when a page, snippet or profile returns. The FTC specifically recommends periodic checks because information can reappear.

Limits you should expect
- Search-result removal is not source deletion. The webpage can remain accessible through its direct URL, another search engine, links, screenshots or copies.
- Google may retain results that it considers valuable to the public, even when they contain personal information.
- People-search opt-outs do not remove government public records and cannot control information displayed in another person’s related profile.
- Data can be repopulated when a public record changes or a broker acquires a new copy.
- No universal deletion timeline or success rate is established; each website’s process and response time differs.
A repeatable checklist
- Search your identifiers and list every exact exposure URL.
- Delete or edit anything you control.
- Ask third-party publishers to remove the source page.
- Submit eligible Google Results about you requests and monitor their status.
- Refresh Google’s index after a source page changes or disappears.
- Complete opt-outs on each matching people-search or broker site.
- Use California DROP if you are a California resident and want its registered-broker coverage.
- Set a recurring reminder to recheck sources, Search and broker profiles.
