To protect an AI-generated image before sharing it, check and clean two separate things: details visible in the pixels and information stored in the file’s metadata. Edit and flatten the image, remove metadata from the exported copy, then inspect that exact file. Neither step proves the image is anonymous or establishes whether it was AI-generated.
What to check before you share
An image can disclose personal information in two ways. The pixels may show a face, name, address, vehicle plate, badge, screen, reflection, landmark, or private setting. The file may also contain metadata such as a creator name, device details, date, or location. Removing metadata does not remove anything visible in the picture; editing the picture does not necessarily remove metadata.

The FBI cautions that people and locations can remain identifiable from image content even when EXIF data is absent. Its guidance recommends removing EXIF and checking the result with a viewer: FBI guidance on image privacy.
Recommended workflow
- Make a copy. Keep the original private if you may need it for further editing, provenance, or an audit. Avoid uploading a sensitive image to an online cleaner unless you are comfortable with its handling and retention terms.
- Inspect the image at full size. Check the whole image, including reflections, screens, mail, signs, badges, and details near the edges. If a crop removes the entire sensitive detail, cropping may be enough. Otherwise, use an editor’s genuine removal or redaction feature.
- Remove visible information completely. Do not rely on small text, a rectangle that merely covers text, or a color-matched overlay. The underlying content may remain searchable or recoverable. Google recommends fully removing or obscuring information before making a file public: Google’s redaction guidance.
- Export a new, flattened image. Google recommends exporting edited images as a flattened, non-vector format such as PNG or WEBP. A flattened export helps prevent hidden layers or an uncropped source from traveling with the image. Open the export itself rather than assuming the editor or document saved only the visible result.
- Remove file metadata. Use a suitable image or operating-system tool to remove the fields you do not want to share. The available controls and fields differ by tool and file format.
- Verify the exported copy. Reopen the exact file you intend to send or post. Inspect its visible content and use a metadata inspector or EXIF viewer to check location, creator or device details, dates, comments, and any other fields you meant to remove.
- Check the sharing context. Do not depend on a platform to strip metadata for you. Consider whether the image or its use requires an AI disclosure; removing metadata is not a substitute for any applicable labeling obligation.
Ways to remove metadata on Windows and macOS
The Publications Office of the European Union’s guidance, last updated 16 June 2025, gives examples for common systems: EU guidance on removing metadata.

- Windows: In File Explorer, open the image’s Properties, select Details, then choose Remove properties and Personal Information. Review the resulting copy and verify which fields were removed.
- macOS: The EU guidance names Photos as an option for removing location data and ImageOptim for broader image metadata removal. These are examples, not endorsements; check the current app controls and verify the output.
- Online cleaners: The EU page also lists Metadata2Go, Ardasus, and MetaCleaner. Before uploading, check current availability, supported formats, which metadata fields are removed, and the service’s file-handling and retention terms. Do not assume an online tool removes visible details from the pixels.
Metadata removal varies by tool and format, so a successful-looking action is not proof that every field is gone. The FBI recommends checking with an EXIF viewer rather than assuming the file is clean.
Metadata cleanup does not remove AI provenance signals
Ordinary EXIF, IPTC, or XMP metadata is not the same as an AI provenance credential or watermark. OpenAI’s current help information says images generated with ChatGPT, Codex, or the OpenAI API include Content Credentials and SynthID signals, but coverage varies by product, model, file type, export path, and creation date: OpenAI information about C2PA in ChatGPT images.

Content Credentials use the C2PA standard and can record origin or history information. Platforms, editing tools, screenshots, and file conversions may remove metadata or credentials. SynthID is embedded in image content and may persist through some changes, although extensive changes can make it undetectable. As a result, stripping metadata is not the same as removing an AI watermark, and a missing signal does not prove that an image was not AI-generated.

Privacy cleanup and AI disclosure are different questions
Removing personal information is a file-privacy step; it does not determine whether you must disclose that an image is AI-generated. Requirements depend on the content, use, and jurisdiction. The European Commission says the EU AI Act’s Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. The Commission describes its Code of Practice as a voluntary way for signatories to help demonstrate compliance, while Article 50 requirements are legal obligations. Its page discusses disclosure for certain deepfakes—artificially generated or manipulated content resembling existing people, objects, places, entities, or events that could falsely appear authentic or truthful. It does not mean every AI-generated image must always be labeled: European Commission information on the Code of Practice.
