To remove or replace a physical SIM in most Samsung Galaxy phones, power the phone off, eject the correct SIM tray with the supplied pin, seat the card in its shaped cutout, and slide the tray back in without forcing it. The tray’s position and the SIM’s contact orientation vary by model, so check the instructions for your exact device before opening it.
How to remove or replace a physical SIM
- Power off the phone. Samsung’s general instructions recommend switching the device off before removing or inserting a SIM.
- Find the SIM tray. Look for the outline of the tray along the phone’s edge. Use the opening associated with that tray—not a nearby microphone or speaker hole. Samsung warns that inserting the ejector into those openings can damage the device. Samsung’s SIM card instructions show the general process.
- Eject the tray. Insert the supplied ejector pin straight into the tray hole and press until the tray pops out. A replacement ejector may be available from a carrier or electronics retailer, but you do not need to buy one if you still have the supplied tool.
- Remove or position the SIM. To remove the card, lift it from the tray. To insert a replacement, match its notched corner to the tray’s shaped cutout. Contact orientation differs by model; use your phone’s diagram or manual rather than assuming the contacts face a particular direction.
- Check the fit and reinsert the tray. The SIM should sit level and flush in the tray. Carefully slide the tray back into its slot. If it resists, stop and check the card’s alignment; pushing a misaligned tray or inserting a SIM backwards can bend or break the tray, Samsung cautions.
- Turn the phone on and wait for recognition. Give the device time to detect the card. Samsung’s Galaxy A57 setup guidance also recommends waiting after reinsertion.
Why the exact Galaxy model matters
Samsung publishes device-specific directions because the tray location, phone position, and steps can differ. For example, Samsung’s Fold7 instructions say to place the phone on a flat surface with the screen facing up and the camera side down; its Fold6 instructions specify screen facing down and camera side up. The opening steps also vary among Flip generations: Flip7 and Flip6 directions have the phone closed, while Flip5 directions have it open to the main screen. These are model-specific examples, not a universal setup.

Eject the tray, lift out the SIM, then return the empty tray carefully. Do not force it if it does not slide in smoothly. If the tray or card will not come out or go back in with gentle handling, stop rather than risk damage; Samsung says service may be needed.

If the phone does not detect the SIM
- Power off the phone, eject the tray, and check that the SIM matches the cutout and lies flat.
- Reinsert the tray fully without bending or forcing it, then turn the phone on and wait for recognition.
- If the phone still does not detect the card, follow Samsung’s SIM-not-detected troubleshooting guidance. The cause may involve the card, phone, or carrier account; the right next step depends on the situation.
Samsung advises inserting the eject pin straight into the tray hole and pulling the tray out completely without bending or forcing it. If the tray is difficult to operate or the problem persists after correct reseating, contact Samsung support or arrange service rather than repeatedly pushing it.
When to contact your carrier
Installing a physical SIM does not necessarily activate service by itself. Your carrier may require account or activation steps, and it is the right contact if the phone requests an unlock code after you insert a new card. A phone may also need to be SIM-unlocked to work with a different carrier. Samsung notes that eSIM support depends partly on carrier availability, so ask your carrier about activation, unlocking, and whether an eSIM is supported for your phone and account.

A model-specific moisture precaution
The Galaxy S9+ user manual says to ensure the SIM tray is dry and fully inserted to help prevent liquid from entering the phone. This is a precaution stated in that model’s manual; consult the documentation for your own device for its specific care guidance. Samsung Galaxy S9+ User Manual.
