The sources do not establish a universally supported way to remove it permanently. If you are troubleshooting lost Wi-Fi or VPN access, address that connection problem separately: the virtual adapter is not the same as your physical Wi-Fi adapter.
First decide what you are trying to fix
“Remove the adapter” can mean three different things: hide or remove a device instance from Device Manager, stop using a feature associated with the virtual adapter, or restore a failing internet connection. These goals call for different steps.

- It is only listed in Device Manager: You can remove the current instance, but it may reappear when Windows or a feature recreates it.
- You do not want to use hotspot or projection features: Community answers associate the virtual adapter with features such as hotspot and Miracast. Consider whether you use those features before disabling it.
- Wi-Fi or VPN is failing: Do not assume the virtual adapter caused the problem because it appeared at the same time. Troubleshoot the connection and physical Wi-Fi adapter instead.
Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guidance addresses connection faults and the physical network adapter driver; it is not a procedure for permanently removing the Wi-Fi Direct virtual adapter.

Remove the current device instance
Device Manager can uninstall a listed device, but uninstalling an instance is not evidence that Windows will never recreate it. Microsoft Q&A users report that the adapter returned after restart, so treat this as a temporary removal rather than a permanent fix.

- Open Device Manager from the Windows search box.
- Expand Network adapters and identify the Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter entry.
- Right-click the entry and choose Uninstall device, then confirm if prompted.
- Restart Windows and check Device Manager again. If the entry returns, that is consistent with the community reports; the sources do not establish a supported setting that guarantees it will stay gone.
Device Manager labels and the number of listed virtual-adapter instances can vary by Windows version and device. Avoid uninstalling the physical Wi-Fi adapter when your only goal is to remove a virtual entry.
If your real problem is a Wi-Fi connection failure
Use Microsoft’s connection troubleshooting steps rather than treating removal of the virtual adapter as a repair. Its guidance includes uninstalling the physical network adapter driver and restarting as a later troubleshooting step; Windows can reinstall that driver after restart. Before doing this, have the driver supplied by your PC or Wi-Fi adapter manufacturer available in case it is needed.

Microsoft also warns that a network reset can require reinstalling or reconfiguring networking software, including VPN clients and Hyper-V virtual switches. Consider that impact before using network reset, particularly on a work-managed or development PC. The official guidance is at Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.

A Microsoft Q&A answer suggests deleting a hosted-network registry key and checking the hosted-network state afterward. This is a community workaround, not a general Microsoft Support procedure, and the available sources do not verify that it applies to every Windows version or permanently removes the virtual adapter.

The answer describes this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicesWlansvcParametersHostedNetworkSettings. It says to delete the HostedNetworkSettings key, restart, and check netsh wlan show hostednetwork for a “Not configured” state. That check concerns hosted-network configuration; it does not establish that the Wi-Fi Direct virtual adapter will never return or that a physical Wi-Fi fault is fixed.
Because this changes the registry, do not proceed unless you understand the consequences and have a recovery plan. XinGuo-MSFT, the answerer in the Microsoft Q&A thread, advises backing up the registry or creating a system restore point as a precaution. What the available reports do—and do not—show
Microsoft-hosted Q&A discussions include reports of the adapter returning after a reboot and suggestions to investigate VPN drivers or startup automation. These are individual reports and suggestions, not proof of a cause or a consistent outcome across Windows releases, devices, and driver versions. One older community answer describes the adapter as a system feature and suggests disabling it rather than removing it; another associates it with hotspot and Miracast use.
