Standard-pool Brawl, Historic Brawl, and Competitive Brawl differ in card pool, matchmaking, and rules, so a list that works in one may not be legal—or suited to the same play experience—in another.
Which MTG Arena Brawl queue should you choose?
Start by deciding whether you want Standard-pool Brawl, Historic Brawl, or ranked Competitive Brawl. Wizards describes Brawl as using a Standard card pool and Historic Brawl as using cards available on Arena, with each format subject to its own rules and bans. Check the current queue and card legality in the Arena client before building; the official Arena formats overview explains the distinctions.

| Queue | Card pool and deck rules | Starting life and mulligan | Matchmaking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard-pool Brawl | One commander and 99 other Brawl-legal cards sharing its color; singleton except basic lands, with no sideboard. The format uses a Standard card pool. Wizards: MTG Brawl Format; Wizards: MTG Arena Formats | 25 life; best-of-one; one free mulligan. Wizards: MTG Brawl Format | Deck power is considered, weighted mostly by commander choice, alongside Constructed skill rating. Wizards: MTG Arena State of the Formats 2026 |
| Historic Brawl | Uses cards available on Arena, subject to format rules and bans. Verify the chosen queue’s current deck-builder legality. Wizards: MTG Arena Formats | Not stated on the cited formats overview; check the current queue details in Arena. | Do not assume its matchmaking works the same as Competitive Brawl; queue details may change. |
| Competitive Brawl | 100 singleton cards including one commander, using commander color identity; check current legality and bans. Wizards: Introducing Competitive Brawl | 25 life; no free mulligan. Wizards: Introducing Competitive Brawl | Ranked matchmaking uses Constructed rank and rating and does not factor in deck composition. Wizards: MTG Arena State of the Formats 2026 |
Ordinary Brawl’s commander-sensitive matchmaking can influence which opponents you face. Competitive Brawl works differently, so consider whether you want deck-power-aware matching or ranked progression when choosing a queue.
What makes a Brawl commander a good fit?
There is no supported universal “best commander” ranking in the official sources cited here. Choose a commander for the plan you want to play, not an unverified tier label. The most useful comparison questions are:
#1 Best Overall
- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
- Game plan and pace: Does the commander encourage creature combat, spells, tokens, artifacts, or a longer value engine? Picture what you want to do in a typical game.
- Synergy: Does its ability directly reward particular cards or actions? Favor cards that enable or benefit from the commander, while checking that each still earns its slot compared with other available options.
- Color identity and card pool: Which colors does it allow, and does the selected queue give you access to the cards your plan needs?
- Cost and timing: How early can the commander affect the game? Its predictable availability can shape the curve and which other plays you need.
- Resilience and dependence: Can the deck still function when the commander is removed, or does the whole plan rely on keeping it in play?
Wizards says Brawl passed Historic’s play rate in early 2025, a historical format-level comparison—not evidence that any particular commander is stronger or more popular now. Wizards: MTG Arena State of the Formats 2026.
How to build a Brawl deck around your commander
- Set the queue and verify legality. Pick Standard-pool Brawl, Historic Brawl, or Competitive Brawl. Confirm the current card pool, commander eligibility, and ban list in the Arena client. The client supports deck building and format-aware legality checks. Wizards: How To Get Started
- Write down the game plan. Decide what a typical win looks like—for example, winning through combat or building value from the commander’s ability. This gives each card a job to do.
- Start with the commander’s text. Add cards that directly enable or reward its ability. Wizards’ deck-building guidance recommends checking that synergy cards remain better choices than the alternatives available to your deck. Wizards: Deck Building with a Brawl Commander
- Plan the curve around reliable access to the commander. Because the commander is predictably available, it can fill a known point on your curve. Make sure your other cards give you useful early plays, mana development, and later actions that support the plan; do not fill every slot with synergy pieces that leave the deck unable to function.
- Check every card and slot. Confirm the deck has 100 cards including its commander, follows singleton rules, uses only permitted colors, and complies with the selected queue’s legality and bans. Remove cards that neither advance the plan nor help the deck function.
- Play and revise. Test the list in its intended queue. If a card repeatedly fails to help your plan or make the deck function, replace it with an available card that has a clearer role, then check legality again.
Which bans and rules should you verify before playing?
Rules and bans can change, so treat the Arena deck builder and the official ban information as the final check rather than relying on an old deck list. In Wizards’ September 11, 2026 format update, effective September 22, Nadu, Winged Wisdom was banned in Brawl; the update listed no Competitive Brawl ban changes. Those details are dated and may be superseded by later changes. Wizards: MTG Arena State of the Formats 2026.
