For a removable retainer, rinse it promptly with lukewarm water and clean it gently according to your orthodontist’s instructions. If odor or cloudiness remains, an orthodontist-approved cleaning tablet may help with buildup—but home cleaning cannot reliably reverse aging, cracks, or permanent discoloration. Avoid very hot water and harsh chemicals.
Clean a removable retainer gently
- Rinse it: Use lukewarm water, especially after taking the retainer out. Avoid very hot or boiling water, which can warp or damage it.
- Brush it as directed: Use a gentle approach and follow your orthodontist’s instructions for your specific appliance. Guidance about toothpaste can vary, so do not assume it is suitable for every retainer.
- Use a deeper cleaner only if appropriate: If your orthodontist recommends an effervescent retainer cleanser, follow that product’s label and rinse the appliance afterward as directed. If odor or cloudiness persists
Persistent odor can indicate that bacteria have multiplied. Odor or discoloration that remains despite regular cleaning may also be related to overlooked buildup, aging material, or bacteria lingering in microscopic cracks or other damage. Cleaning may remove some residue, but it cannot be counted on to make aged or damaged plastic clear again.

The AAO advises trying a stronger or more frequent deep-cleaning method, such as a cleaning tablet or baking soda paste, before contacting your orthodontist. If the odor or discoloration persists after multiple cleaning methods, schedule an appointment; the orthodontist can assess whether the retainer is damaged or needs attention. Use cleaning tablets according to their own instructions
Cleaning tablets are an optional aid, not a universal fix. Products can differ, so use one only if it is suitable for your retainer and follow its exact directions. For example, Dentsply Sirona’s Retainer Brite instructions identify it for removable dental appliances, call for warm—not hot—water, and direct users to rinse after soaking. Those directions apply to that product; do not transfer its soak instructions to another cleaner.

Avoid heat and harsh DIY chemicals
Do not use very hot or boiling water, bleach, alcohol-based mouthwash, strong detergents, or other harsh chemicals to try to remove odor or cloudiness. They can damage retainer material or leave residues. Vinegar is not established by the cited AAO guidance as a recommended or universally safe treatment. When in doubt, ask the orthodontist who provided the appliance before trying a new cleaning method.
Prevent new odor and buildup
When the removable retainer is out of your mouth, keep it in its case. Follow your orthodontist’s routine-care directions so residue does not have time to build up between cleanings.
