Ethereum is a programmable network for smart contracts, secured by proof-of-stake; its native asset, ETH, pays fees and supports staking, but has no fixed supply cap in the comparison described by Ethereum.org. Those differences shape how the networks work—not which asset will perform better. Both involve price volatility and risks from custody, user error, and network use.
What Bitcoin and Ethereum are designed to do
Bitcoin’s core design centers on transferring value between users without relying on a central payment operator. Its native asset, BTC, is the currency transferred on the Bitcoin network.

Ethereum is a programmable network. Developers can deploy smart contracts—software that runs according to its programmed rules—and build applications on top of them. ETH is used to pay network fees, supports contract execution, and can be staked to help secure the network. Ethereum.org’s Bitcoin-versus-Ethereum comparison describes these different roles.
How their consensus systems differ
| Feature | Bitcoin | Ethereum |
|---|---|---|
| Consensus mechanism | Proof-of-work: miners expend computational work to add blocks. | Proof-of-stake: validators stake ETH to participate in securing the network. |
| What participants contribute | Computing capacity and energy for mining. | Staked ETH; validators can be penalized for misconduct. |
| Energy framing | Mining requires computation and energy. | Ethereum.org estimates that Ethereum’s energy expenditure fell by approximately 99.98% after its transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake. This is Ethereum.org’s estimate of Ethereum’s change, not a current live measurement or a direct Bitcoin comparison. |
These are different resource and security models, not guarantees that either network is invulnerable. Ethereum.org also notes that proof-of-stake has been in live use for less time than Bitcoin’s proof-of-work design. Its official proof-of-stake FAQ states: “Ethereum uses a proof-of-stake mechanism to secure the blockchain.”

How the supply of BTC and ETH differs
Bitcoin: predetermined issuance and a maximum
Bitcoin has a protocol-defined eventual maximum of 21 million BTC, with new issuance following a predetermined schedule. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s April 17, 2025, memo says the April 2024 halving reduced the block reward to 3.125 BTC per new block. That is the subsidy for a block—not a fixed payment to every miner, and not a statement about BTC’s price.
Ethereum: issuance and burning affect net supply
Ethereum has no fixed supply cap in Ethereum.org’s cited comparison. ETH is issued in connection with staking, while some ETH is burned in connection with network activity. As a result, net supply can rise or fall over time. A capped supply does not guarantee that an asset’s price will rise, and variable net issuance alone does not determine ETH’s value.

What the differences mean for users
- For straightforward value transfer: Bitcoin’s design is centered on peer-to-peer currency transfers.
- For programmable applications: Ethereum supports smart contracts and applications, but using them can add complexity beyond simply holding or transferring an asset.
- For network participation: Ethereum allows ETH holders to stake, which involves additional operational considerations; Bitcoin uses mining rather than staking.
- For energy considerations: Ethereum’s reported reduction concerns its own transition to proof-of-stake. It should not be read as a controlled, current comparison of the energy used by Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Network designs can shape fees, transaction handling, and the kinds of applications available, but performance and ecosystem conditions can change. A description of a network’s design is not a permanent guarantee of speed, cost, or availability.

Direct self-custody means controlling the private keys that authorize transactions. Losing access to keys, exposing them to someone else, or making an operational mistake can put funds at risk. The SEC’s Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors explains that using a third-party custodian or an exchange-traded product brings a different set of dependencies and risks; it does not make the risk disappear.

- READY IN 3 MINUTES – Set up your ELLIPAL X Card crypto wallet on the offline Starter device, then tap to the ELLIPAL mobile App and start using it. This 100% offline crypto wallet is a no battery crypto wallet with no charging, no firmware updates, and no complicated setup.
- TURN ANY WALLET INTO A CARD – Already have a wallet? Import your recovery phrase from MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Ledger, Trezor, or any compatible seed phrase wallet. X Card works as a backup wallet and physical twin of your existing bitcoin wallet, ethereum wallet, NFT wallet, or altcoin wallet — no transfers, no new accounts, no starting over.
- BUILT ON AN EAL6+ SECURE CHIP – Designed as a secure crypto wallet and private key wallet, X Card generates and stores your private keys inside the EAL6+ secure chip. Your keys never reach your phone, the App, USB, Bluetooth, or the internet, making it a true no bluetooth hardware wallet and no USB crypto wallet.
- ONE APP, EVERYTHING CRYPTO – Manage more with one cold storage wallet. Buy, sell, swap, send, spend, and earn across 45+ blockchains and 10,000+ tokens. Use X Card as your cryptocurrency wallet, coins and tokens wallet, DeFi wallet, and staking wallet for everyday crypto management.
- TAP TO CRYPTO – Carry your crypto cold wallet on a card and secure every transaction with one NFC tap. ELLIPAL X Card combines the simplicity of a crypto wallet with the protection of a cold storage hardware wallet.
A wallet device is optional and may be part of a self-custody setup, but it does not protect against market losses, forgotten or compromised keys, or user error. Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin FAQ also covers practical questions about using Bitcoin. The SEC’s September 2024 investor bulletin warns that bitcoin and ether prices can be highly volatile. The material cited here does not establish an up-to-date investment outlook.

There is no universal winner in this comparison. Bitcoin’s focus is peer-to-peer currency and predetermined issuance; Ethereum’s focus is programmability, with ETH serving fee and staking roles and net supply affected by both issuance and burning. Which design matters more depends on what someone wants to do. Neither design removes price, custody, or operational risk, and supply mechanics alone cannot establish an investment outcome.
