Unplug the phone, cable and any connected accessories. Gently dry the phone’s exterior, then follow the drying instructions for your exact make and model. Do not charge by cable while the phone’s port or cable connector is wet; don’t use rice, heat or compressed air, and don’t put anything into the port.
What to do first
- Disconnect power. Unplug the cable from the phone and, where applicable, disconnect the power adapter from the outlet. Remove attached accessories.
- Wipe only the exterior. Use a soft, clean cloth to remove surface moisture. Do not push a cloth, swab, tissue or other object into the charging port.
- Let it dry using the method for your model. Keep the phone in a dry, ventilated place and avoid external heat. If the phone was submerged or is not behaving normally, consult the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider rather than assuming that a dry exterior means the inside is safe.
- Wait for the charging warning to clear. Do not connect a cable until the port and cable connector are dry and any moisture alert has cleared.
Follow the instructions for your phone
iPhone
Apple’s liquid-detection instructions apply to iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later. Disconnect the cable or accessory at both ends. With the connector facing down, gently tap the phone against your hand to help remove liquid, then leave it in a dry area with airflow. Apple says to wait at least 30 minutes before trying a cable connection; if the alert returns, continue drying. Complete drying can take up to 24 hours. Do not use heat or compressed air, insert anything into the connector, or put the phone in rice. A Qi-certified wireless charger may be used if the back of the iPhone is dry. Google Pixel
If the USB-C port or cable is wet, Google says to turn off the Pixel and leave it on a flat surface at room temperature to dry. Do not put anything into the port or cable. If the phone displays a liquid-or-debris alert, wait until it indicates the USB port is okay to use. Google advises contacting support if that alert remains for two hours or more. Visible burning, melting or corrosion also calls for service. The Pixel 10 safety guide says not to charge the phone while wet; both the port and cable connector must be dry before charging again. Samsung Galaxy
For a water-resistant Galaxy with moisture in the charging port, Samsung advises disconnecting the charger, gently shaking the phone, wiping its exterior with a soft, clean cloth and leaving it in a ventilated area. Samsung says port moisture usually evaporates in approximately 1 to 2 hours. Do not insert anything into the port or use heat or compressed air. Cable charging must wait until the port is completely dry. Wireless charging is an option only on a supported device, and the phone itself must be thoroughly dry before it is placed on the charger. If a Galaxy without water resistance is exposed to liquid, Samsung says to turn it off immediately, remove removable cards and accessories where possible, wipe it and arrange service inspection. Do not turn it back on before inspection: moisture may remain inside even if the outside looks dry. Follow the instructions for the specific model.
Why rice, heat and port cleaning are unsafe shortcuts
- Rice is not a drying method to rely on. Apple explicitly warns against putting an iPhone in rice because small particles can damage it.
- Skip hair dryers, heaters and direct heat. Apple and Samsung warn against using external heat to dry a phone.
- Do not use compressed air. Apple and Samsung advise against it in their liquid-drying guidance.
- Keep objects out of the connector. Swabs, paper towels and other items can cause damage. Wipe the outside only and let the port dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Water resistance does not make wet charging safe. Google warns against charging a wet phone, and Samsung requires a completely dry port before cable charging.
When to stop and get service
Contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider if the phone was submerged, behaves abnormally, has a visibly burned, melted or corroded port, or continues to show a moisture warning or charging fault after the manufacturer’s drying instructions. Samsung recommends inspection after water exposure even if the device appears normal. If an Apple liquid alert repeatedly appears with one cable or accessory, Apple advises contacting that accessory’s manufacturer or seeking service.

Follow model-specific advice if the liquid was dirty or was not fresh water; Samsung notes that different handling may be needed. Do not rinse the phone unless the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model tell you to.
