Choose in-store when timing or hands-on help matters
Local pickup can avoid waiting for delivery, and a pool-specialty retailer may be able to discuss a product or offer water testing if that service is available. Call first with the product name, model or part number, and any relevant equipment details. Ask whether the item is physically in stock, whether testing or advice is offered, and whether a service appointment is needed.

Choose online when comparison and assortment matter
Online listings make it possible to compare options across pool-specific retailers and marketplaces, but a listing alone does not settle whether an item can be shipped to your address or when it will arrive. For chemicals, check the retailer’s shipping rules; for bulky equipment, check freight, delivery access, returns, and installation requirements before checkout.
Compare equivalent products, not just sticker prices
There is no established nationwide cheapest retailer. Compare the same product specification and package size, then include shipping, freight, and pickup costs. Chemical formulations and concentrations may differ, so a lower shelf price is not necessarily an equivalent purchase.

What pool products can you buy?
Retailers may list chemicals, cleaning tools, water test kits, filters, pumps, heaters, liners, and accessories, but the selection and stock vary by store and season. Home Depot’s category, for example, lists pool test kits among its offerings; check its local inventory rather than assuming a kit is on the shelf. What channel-use figures can—and cannot—tell you
In Skimmer’s 2025 State of Pool Service report, surveyed pool-service businesses reported buying parts and supplies in person at a local distributor (79%), through delivery from a local distributor (53%), from online pool retailers (30%), and from online non-pool retailers, including Amazon and big-box retailers (41%). Respondents could select multiple channels, so the figures are not exclusive market shares.
