Open the post, tap its menu, choose Edit, tap the X beside the location, and tap the checkmark. Editing the post does not change the image file on your phone or computer, and it does not stop Instagram from having location access in other situations. Those are separate controls, covered below.
Remove the location from an existing post
These steps follow the iDownloadBlog guide “How to remove location from your existing Instagram photos” by Sébastien Page, updated September 18, 2026. It is a third-party how-to, not official Instagram help documentation, so menu labels may shift as the app updates.

- Open your Instagram profile and select the photo whose location you want to remove.
- Tap the post menu and select Edit.
- In the edit view, tap the X next to the location name.
- Tap the checkmark to save.
- If the old location still appears on the post, force-close Instagram, reopen it, and check again. The guide suggests the label may be cached in the app.
According to the same guide, the edit also removes the post from that location’s photo map, so it should no longer appear under the place’s photo listing once the change takes effect. The guide does not give a timeframe for that to update, so if the post still appears there after a few refreshes, the force-close step above is the next thing to try.

Three different location settings
Most confusion about location on Instagram comes from treating three separate things as one. Each is controlled in a different place.

If your goal is simply to stop one old post from showing a place, the post editor is the only step you need. If your goal is to stop future photos from being tagged automatically, you need the permission change. If you are worried about what a copy of the original file reveals to anyone who downloads it, you need to deal with the file itself.
Restrict Instagram’s location access on iPhone
The guide’s iPhone route is:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Select Instagram and choose Never.
This stops Instagram from using your device location under that permission setting. It does not remove a location already attached to an earlier post, so use the post editor for that. The guide covers iPhone only. If you use Android, the menu names and permission structure may differ, and this article does not verify an Android route.

Location embedded in the photo file
Instagram’s post editor changes what is shown on the post. It is not established that it also strips location metadata from the original image file. The guide notes that metadata in the source file is handled through a separate process before upload. If a file you already posted carries location data and you are concerned about copies of it, check the original file and remove its metadata with a separate tool or your device’s photo settings. Do not assume the Instagram edit has done that.

If you publish through a scheduling service, the location control may live in that tool rather than in Instagram. HeyOrca’s help article “Tag locations on Instagram,” published August 6, 2026, describes deleting a selected location in its own post editor: open the location selector and click its trash icon. HeyOrca says this applies to its Direct Publishing feature, and that location availability through Meta’s API can vary. Those controls are not the same as the Instagram app’s, so changes made in the scheduler may not show the same behavior in the Instagram app.

What to do if the location still shows
- Stale label: Force-close and reopen Instagram, then view the post again. The guide attributes this to the app caching the display.
- Post still appears under the place: Confirm that the location was removed from the post itself by opening Edit again. If the post shows no location in the editor, the remaining listing is likely a display delay.
- Location still tied to future uploads: Check the iPhone permission setting described above. The post editor will not prevent it.
The guide does not describe what happens on posts that were shared to other platforms or copied elsewhere. Those copies are outside what an Instagram edit can change.
