If you’re seeing alerts labeled “JEV,” first check the name of the site or app shown on the notification and which browser is displaying it. “JEV” has not been established here as a specific malware family, so the alert alone does not prove your device is infected. If only one website is sending notifications, revoke that site’s permission; if your search engine, homepage or extensions have also changed, investigate beyond notifications.
Identify the notification sender before acting
Look at the notification’s displayed site or app name. If possible, note the site address and the browser in which the alert appears. A website that has permission to send notifications can produce unwanted pop-ups without that alone establishing a malware infection.

- Do not click links in an alarming alert, call a number it displays, or download a “fix” it offers.
- For software updates or security tools, use the program’s official website rather than a pop-up. Google’s guidance on unwanted ads, pop-ups and malware cautions against suspicious download and update prompts.
- If you need to identify a specific “JEV” detection, use the exact sender, URL or security-tool detection name. The label by itself does not identify a confirmed threat.
Revoke the website’s notification permission
Chrome on desktop
- Open Chrome’s menu and choose Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security → Site settings, then open the notification permission controls. Labels and layout can vary by Chrome version.
- Find the unfamiliar site in the allowed list and block or remove its permission.
That permission belongs to the browser profile and site; you do not need to buy or install an antivirus product just to revoke it. Sophos Home Support says, “Removing the websites sending the notifications will stop the pop-ups.” Its browser-hijacker guidance also links to notification-management help for Chrome, Firefox and Edge.
Firefox or Edge
Use the browser’s own current notification-permission controls to remove or block the sender. Chrome’s menu path does not apply to every browser; consult the notification instructions linked from Sophos Home Support if you need help locating them.

Check whether the problem goes beyond notifications
After blocking the sender, see whether the browser still redirects you, shows persistent pop-ups, has an unfamiliar extension, or uses a homepage or search engine you did not choose. Google lists changed homepage or search settings, returning extensions, redirects and persistent pop-ups as possible signs of unwanted software or malware—not proof that any particular named threat is present.
Mozilla describes search hijacking as a third party altering browser settings without permission. Its Firefox Help article on search hijacking explains that extensions, bundled installers, advertising networks, fake antivirus software and downloads from unreliable sources can be involved. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of your device.

Remove unwanted changes and reset only if needed
Review extensions and installed apps
Remove browser extensions or installed programs only when you can identify them as unwanted. If the homepage or search setting changed, check the browser’s own settings and recovery guidance. Mozilla notes that Firefox’s automatic search reset is not perfectly accurate, and it is not a malware scan.
Consider a browser reset
If unwanted settings remain, Chrome’s reset option is under Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults. Google advises checking the computer for unwanted programs before resetting Chrome. A reset may mean you need to enable trusted extensions again; review them first rather than restoring every extension automatically. See Google’s removal and reset guidance for platform-specific instructions.

If the changes return, check for persistence
If the sender comes back or browser changes reappear, review unfamiliar installed programs, startup apps and browser accounts that sync settings across devices. Then consider a full system scan, especially if redirects, pop-ups or other symptoms persist after browser cleanup. Sophos recommends this broader follow-up in its browser-hijacker guidance; a paid security product is not established as necessary for removing a notification permission.
