Does a 1,000Hz Gaming Monitor Make a Difference?

Yes, a native 1,000Hz gaming monitor is technically faster than a 500Hz one, but that does not guarantee a noticeable improvement or better results for every player. At 1,000Hz, the display can refresh every 1 millisecond, versus every 2 milliseconds at 500Hz. To use that capability, your game and PC need to deliver frames quickly, and motion clarity also depends on pixel response, image persistence, and blur-reduction features.

What does 1,000Hz change?

Refresh rate is the number of times per second a display can update its image. The interval between refreshes is 1,000 milliseconds divided by the refresh rate:

Native refresh rate Time between refreshes
500Hz 2ms
1,000Hz 1ms

Those intervals are derived from the stated refresh rates. A 1,000Hz display has twice as many refresh opportunities per second as a 500Hz display, but that specification alone does not establish how large a difference you will perceive in a particular game. The result depends on the frames your system supplies and on how the display handles motion. LG’s product information identifies 1,000Hz as the monitor’s native refresh rate.

Does 1,000Hz mean 1,000 FPS?

No. Refresh rate is what the monitor can display; frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), is how many frames the game renders or outputs. A 1,000Hz monitor does not make a game render at 1,000 FPS. If the game supplies frames less often than the display can refresh, the monitor may refresh without receiving a new game-rendered frame. LG explicitly cautions that support for 1,000Hz does not imply or guarantee 1,000 FPS or more in any particular game. See LG’s qualification.

The practical question is therefore not just whether a monitor supports 1,000Hz, but whether your games and system can deliver very high frame rates at the resolution and settings you use. NVIDIA Research’s 2026 study examined first-person-shooter tasks at frame rates up to 500 FPS and reported perceived benefits across its tested range. That study does not test 1,000Hz, so it cannot establish a universal performance gain from moving to a 1,000Hz display. NVIDIA Research’s study.

Why refresh rate is not the whole motion-clarity story

Motion clarity describes how clearly moving objects appear. Refresh rate matters, but it is not the only factor. The time each image remains visible, the speed of pixel transitions, frame delivery, and blur-reduction behavior can all affect the result. A high refresh-rate specification by itself does not describe all of those characteristics.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor | 180Hz, 1ms, AMD FreeSync, HDR10, Height Adj Stand, Black Equalizer, Virtual Aim Point, Auto Source Switch+ (LS27FG512ENXZA)
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Some displays use strobing or related blur-reduction methods to reduce the time an image is visible. NVIDIA’s ULMB 2 explainer describes an “effective motion clarity” figure calculated using refresh rate and strobe duty cycle. That is a vendor metric for blur reduction, not the monitor’s native refresh rate; it should not be read as proof that the panel refreshes at the resulting effective figure. How VRR and strobing fit in

Variable refresh rate (VRR) synchronizes display updates with the game’s variable frame output. Strobing instead targets sample-and-hold motion blur by reducing the time an image remains visible. They address different parts of the experience, and whether they can be used together depends on the monitor and its implementation. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC Pulsar as combining these approaches. Check the specific model’s mode limitations rather than assuming every feature works at every refresh rate. LG says the 25G590B-B’s 1,100Hz overclock can limit adaptive-sync functionality. LG product details.

A real native 1,000Hz example: LG UltraGear 25G590B-B

LG lists the UltraGear 25G590B-B as a 25-inch-class Full HD (1920 × 1080) IPS monitor with native 1,000Hz refresh. Its listed features include MBR Pro, G-SYNC compatibility, FreeSync Premium, DisplayPort 2.1, and HDMI 2.1. Reaching the maximum refresh rate requires Windows 11, a qualifying recent GPU, and DisplayPort 2.1; actual performance also depends on system and game limits. How to decide whether 1,000Hz is worth it for you

  • Check real game performance: Consider the frame rates your games and PC can sustain at your chosen resolution and settings, not just the monitor’s maximum refresh specification.
  • Compare at the resolution you use: The cited LG example is Full HD. If you prioritize a different resolution, compare monitors at that resolution as well as at their native refresh rates.
  • Look beyond the Hz figure: Review pixel response and visible ghosting, image persistence, and the actual blur-reduction modes available.
  • Check VRR and strobing compatibility: Confirm which modes work together and whether an overclock or other setting changes adaptive-sync behavior.
  • Weigh the cost against your needs: Compare the current price with alternatives that match your games, system capability, resolution needs, and desired motion features.

A 1,000Hz monitor is most compelling when very high frame rates and the display’s motion features fit the games and system you actually use. The reviewed evidence does not establish one refresh rate as best for everyone, nor does it support a universal claim that every player will notice a large improvement at 1,000Hz.
