Safari does not save a transparent version of the original picture; it produces a cutout you copy or drag elsewhere.
Steps to lift a subject in Safari
Apple calls this feature a photo cutout or subject lift. These steps follow Apple’s iPhone User Guide and Apple Support documentation.

- Open the web page or saved image in Safari, then tap the image so it fills the screen.
- Touch and hold the subject you want to keep. Keep your finger on it until an outline appears around the subject.
- Lift your finger. In the menu that appears, choose Copy Subject.
- Open the app where you want to use the cutout, such as Notes, Messages, or a design app, and paste it.
You can also keep holding the subject and drag it into a document in another app that supports drag and drop, such as Notes. Apple’s documentation describes this as an alternative to copying.

Where else the cutout feature appears
The same subject-lifting feature is described in Apple’s guide as available in Photos, Quick Look, and other places, not only Safari. In those apps, the follow-up options can include copying or sharing the subject, dragging it into a document, looking it up, or saving it as a sticker. If you already have the picture in Photos, the same touch-and-hold gesture works there and may give you more sharing choices.

Which iPhones and iOS versions support it
Apple Support lists photo cutouts on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and later running iOS 16 or later. Older models or earlier iOS versions are not covered by this documentation, so if the outline never appears on an older device, check your iOS version under Settings, then General, then About, and update it first.
What the cutout cannot do
Apple states that subjects cannot be pasted onto another photo using this feature. You can copy or share the cutout, but placing it over a new background requires a separate image editor. Apple’s documentation does not describe the cutout as a transparent-background export of the original file, so do not expect the saved picture in Photos to be altered.

If the outline does not appear
- Make sure the subject is clearly separated from the background. Busy images with overlapping objects can be harder to lift cleanly.
- Press and hold directly on the subject rather than on empty space, and keep your finger still until the outline shows.
- Confirm your device model and iOS version meet the requirements above.
- Try the same image in Photos, where the feature is also documented.
Evidence and limits
These instructions are based on Apple’s iPhone User Guide and an Apple Support article on photo cutouts. Apple does not give performance figures for how accurately subjects are isolated, so results will vary by photo. Menu labels and availability can change with iOS updates, so check Apple’s current documentation if you are reading this long after its publication.
