To remove HTTP Basic Authentication from Nginx, remove the auth_basic and auth_basic_user_file directives from the configuration block that enables them, test the configuration, and reload Nginx. If authentication should remain on most of a site but one URL should be public, keep the inherited rule and add auth_basic off; inside that URL’s location block.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The password file does not have to be deleted. Nginx stops reading it when no active configuration points to it, so deleting the file is an optional cleanup step after you have confirmed that nothing else uses it.

What controls htpasswd protection in Nginx?
Nginx’s ngx_http_auth_basic_module implements HTTP Basic Authentication with two directives:
| Directive | Purpose | What happens when it is removed |
|---|---|---|
auth_basic |
Sets the authentication realm and turns Basic Authentication on for the configuration block. | The block no longer requests Basic Authentication unless another inherited or more specific rule enables it. |
auth_basic_user_file |
Names the htpasswd-format file that contains the usernames and password hashes Nginx reads. | Nginx no longer uses that file for Basic Authentication from this configuration. |
Both directives can appear in the http, server, location, and limit_except contexts. Their location determines which requests are protected. A rule at http level can affect many virtual hosts; a rule at server level normally affects one virtual host; and a rule in a location affects the matching URI area.

Nginx configuration is hierarchical. A child block can inherit a parent directive unless it sets its own value. The special value off cancels an inherited auth_basic setting. That distinction gives you two different ways to remove protection: delete the rule where it is defined, or override it only for a selected path.
Choose between deleting the rule and overriding it
| Approach | Use it when | Result |
|---|---|---|
Delete auth_basic and auth_basic_user_file |
The whole configuration block should stop requiring a username and password. | Protection is removed at that scope. Requests can still be protected by a different, more specific configuration block. |
Add auth_basic off; in a child location |
A parent server or HTTP block should remain protected, but one path should be public. | That location cancels the inherited authentication rule while other locations continue to use it. |
| Delete the htpasswd file | Only after confirming that no active configuration references it and no other service needs it. | Removes an unused credential file. It does not itself disable authentication. |
Do not remove only auth_basic_user_file and assume the site is open. The authentication policy is controlled by auth_basic; leaving an active policy without its file can produce configuration or request failures rather than the intended public access. Remove or override the policy, then deal with the file separately.

Start by searching the Nginx configuration directory:
grep -rn "auth_basic" /etc/nginx/
The search shows the files and line numbers containing the directive, including occurrences in included files. Inspect each result in context. A commented line is not active, and a directive in one virtual host may not control the hostname or path you are testing.
Look for the paired file directive as well:
grep -rn "auth_basic_user_file" /etc/nginx/
Write down the enclosing block for every active match: http, server, location, or limit_except. That scope tells you whether changing the line affects one directory, one virtual host, or a broader set of requests. If several files contain the directives, determine which file is included by the active configuration before editing. Avoid deleting a rule from an unrelated example file while leaving the live rule untouched.

Remove both directives from the block where they are set
A typical protected server block may look like this:
server { listen 80; server_name example.test; auth_basic "Restricted area"; auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd; location / { root /var/www/example; } }Delete the two authentication lines, leaving the rest of the server block intact:
server { listen 80; server_name example.test; location / { root /var/www/example; } }If the directives were placed in an
httpblock, remove them there to stop the inherited policy for all affected servers. If they were placed in a specificlocation, remove them only from that location.What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Save the file without changing unrelated settings
Check braces, semicolons, include statements, and the remaining location rules. A missing semicolon or brace can make the entire configuration invalid even though the authentication edit is correct.
-
Validate before applying the change
Run:
nginx -tProceed only when the command reports that the syntax test is successful. If it reports an error, use the filename and line number in the message to correct the configuration. Do not reload a configuration that fails the test; the running worker processes will continue using the last successfully loaded configuration.
-
Reload Nginx
Apply the validated configuration without stopping the service:
nginx -s reloadIf Nginx is managed by a service manager in your environment, use that manager’s reload operation instead. A reload is the step that makes the saved directives take effect for new requests.

Test without credentials
Send a request that does not include an
Authorizationheader:curl -i https://example.test/Confirm that the response matches the public behavior you intended. The exact status may be a success response, a redirect, or an application-level response depending on the site; the important check is that Nginx no longer returns an authentication challenge for the formerly protected block.
Make one path public while keeping the rest protected
For a public directory, health endpoint, download area, or landing page under a protected server, keep the parent authentication settings and cancel them in the child location. The Nginx admin configuration pattern is:
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.test;
auth_basic "Private site";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
location / {
root /var/www/example;
}
location /public/ {
auth_basic off;
root /var/www/example;
}
}
Requests matching /public/ use auth_basic off; instead of inheriting the server-level realm. Other locations continue to inherit auth_basic "Private site"; and the configured htpasswd file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems-
Identify the exact URI prefix or pattern
Use the location that actually matches the public request. For a directory-style path, include the trailing slash when that is how links are generated, and account for any separate location handling the slashless form.
-
Add the override inside that location
Place
auth_basic off;in the child block. Do not put it in a neighboring location and expect it to affect this path. -
Test, reload, and check both sides
Run
nginx -t, reload withnginx -s reload, then make an unauthenticated request to the public path and to a still-private path. The first should no longer receive the Basic Authentication challenge; the second should retain it.Rank #4

The override changes authentication only. It does not change file permissions, application authorization, IP restrictions, or any other access-control mechanism configured elsewhere. A path can therefore be free of htpasswd while still returning an application login page, a forbidden response, or another policy-specific result.
Understand scope before editing
http context
An authentication directive in the top-level http context can be inherited by multiple virtual hosts and locations. Removing it may open more hostnames than intended. Use this scope only when the policy was deliberately shared across those servers.
server context
A server-level rule normally protects requests handled by that virtual host. Deleting both directives here opens the site unless a matching child location defines its own authentication rule. Adding auth_basic off; to one location leaves the server default in place for other paths.
location context
A location-level rule is the narrowest common scope for a URI area. Remove the two directives to open that area, or use auth_basic off; when the location inherits authentication from a parent.
limit_except context
The module also supports limit_except. If authentication is configured there, it applies to the methods covered by that block. Check for this context when browser requests appear open but a particular method, such as a write request, still receives a challenge.

Verification should cover the request path, the absence of credentials, and the configuration state.
- Confirm the test passed: Run
nginx -tafter every edit. A successful syntax check is required before a reload. - Confirm the reload completed: Run
nginx -s reloadand check the command’s result. If the reload is rejected, the old configuration remains active. - Use an unauthenticated client: Test with
curlwithout supplying-uor anAuthorizationheader. This avoids accidentally proving access with cached credentials. - Test the intended scope: Check the path you opened and a path that should remain private. This catches an override placed at the wrong level.
- Search again: Repeat the
grepsearches if a challenge remains. Another included file, virtual host, or location may still defineauth_basic.
A response that is not a Basic Authentication challenge does not guarantee that the application is publicly usable. Upstream authorization, filesystem permissions, maintenance rules, and redirects can produce other responses. Judge the result against the behavior you intended for that URL.

Troubleshoot common results
The browser still asks for a username and password
First test with unauthenticated curl so browser state is not part of the diagnosis. Then search all Nginx files for auth_basic and auth_basic_user_file. If a parent block still defines authentication, either remove those directives at the parent or add auth_basic off; to the exact child location that handles the request. Confirm that you reloaded the same Nginx instance whose configuration you edited.
nginx -t fails after the edit
Read the reported file and line number. Check for a missing semicolon, unmatched brace, misspelled directive, or an edit made outside the intended block. Restore the backup if necessary, correct one issue at a time, and run the test again. Do not use a reload as a way to discover syntax errors.
The reload succeeds but the path is still protected
Authentication may be defined in another scope or in a more specific location. Search every included configuration file and inspect the matching server and location blocks. Also check whether the request is reaching a different hostname, port, or virtual host than the one you edited.
Removing the file caused an error
The htpasswd file is optional only after no active directive references it. If auth_basic_user_file remains anywhere that Nginx loads, deleting the file can leave authentication misconfigured. Restore the file or remove the remaining policy, run nginx -t, and reload only after the configuration is valid.
The public path returns an application login page
auth_basic off; disables Nginx’s Basic Authentication for that location; it does not bypass authentication implemented by the upstream application. Inspect the application routing and authorization separately if the response is an HTML login page rather than an Nginx challenge.
What to do with the htpasswd file
Removing the directives is enough to stop Nginx from using the file for that policy. Keeping the file is often the safer first choice because another virtual host, included configuration, or maintenance process may still reference it.
If you want to remove the file, search for its path and verify every reference before deleting it. Perform the deletion only after the configuration no longer uses it, then run nginx -t and reload. Treat the file as credential material: restrict access while it exists, and follow your normal secret-disposal procedure rather than deleting it casually from a production system.
Practical decision checklist
- Open everything controlled by this block: Delete
auth_basicandauth_basic_user_filewhere they are defined. - Open only one child path: Keep the parent directives and add
auth_basic off;in the matchinglocation. - Do not rely on deleting the file: A missing htpasswd file is not the switch that disables the policy.
- Always validate: Run
nginx -tbefore applying changes. - Always reload: Use
nginx -s reloador the equivalent reload action for the service manager. - Always verify without credentials: Test the exact URL and confirm that other protected URLs retain their intended behavior.
Example: complete before-and-after configuration
This example shows a server that protects everything initially, then exposes only a status endpoint.
Before
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name example.test;
auth_basic "Staff";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
location / {
proxy_pass http://application;
}
location = /status {
proxy_pass http://application;
}
}
After opening /status
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name example.test;
auth_basic "Staff";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
location / {
proxy_pass http://application;
}
location = /status {
auth_basic off;
proxy_pass http://application;
}
}
The exact-match location now cancels the inherited Basic Authentication rule for /status, while the general location remains protected. After saving, run nginx -t, reload, and request /status without credentials. Then request another application URL without credentials to confirm the parent protection still applies.
The Bottom Line
Remove both auth_basic and auth_basic_user_file to disable htpasswd protection at its configured scope. Use auth_basic off; for a public child path, validate with nginx -t, reload with nginx -s reload, and delete the htpasswd file only after confirming that no active configuration still references it.
