Excel’s blank-cell selection and filters reveal candidates; they do not prove a whole row is empty. For recurring cleanup, Power Query’s Remove Blank Rows checks rows as records. Make a recoverable copy before bulk deletion, and reveal hidden rows and columns so their contents are not overlooked.
Before deleting anything, define what counts as a blank row
Set the boundaries of the list or table you intend to clean, then identify the columns that can contain meaningful data. A row with an empty cell in one field may still hold a valid record in another. Only treat a row as blank when it has no data in any relevant column.

Display hidden rows and columns before editing; hidden data can be deleted inadvertently. Microsoft also advises checking worksheet data organization before making changes: organize data in a worksheet.

Delete rows found through Go To Special
Go To Special selects blank cells within a selected range. It does not automatically identify only rows that are blank across all columns. Microsoft documents this workflow for Excel for Windows.

- Select the bounded range containing the list you want to check.
- Choose Home > Find & Select > Go To, or press Ctrl+G.
- Choose Special, select Blanks, and confirm.
- Inspect the selected cells in context. Check every relevant column in each candidate row; a selected blank cell alone is not a reason to delete its row.
- After confirming which rows are empty across the record, select those entire rows and delete them using the worksheet’s row-delete command.
For Microsoft’s instructions on selecting blanks, see find and select cells that meet specific conditions. Because this method starts with blank cells, take care not to delete a row that has data elsewhere.
Use a filter to inspect likely blank rows
Filtering is useful when a column reliably signals which rows might be empty. It displays rows with a blank value in that column while hiding the others; it does not itself remove records. If other columns can contain data when the chosen field is blank, inspect the full visible row and keep any valid records.
- Select the range or table, then choose Data > Filter.
- Open the filter menu for a column that can help identify candidate rows and select its blank value.
- Check every visible candidate across all relevant columns.
- Select and delete only rows confirmed to be empty across the record.
- Clear the filter to show the remaining records again.
Microsoft documents filtering for ranges and tables across Excel for Windows, Mac, and the web in its filter data in a range or table guidance. To restore the full view, follow Microsoft’s instructions to clear or remove a filter.
Remove wholly blank rows in Power Query
For a repeatable cleanup, Power Query offers a whole-row operation: Home > Remove Rows > Remove Blank Rows. Microsoft describes this command as evaluating the row as a record. It is different from a column-specific operation that removes rows with null or blank values in one chosen field.
Rank #3
- Open the query for the data you want to clean.
- Choose Home > Remove Rows > Remove Blank Rows.
- Review the query output to verify it removed only rows blank across the record.
- Load the reviewed result back to the worksheet when it is ready.
See Microsoft’s Power Query instructions for removing rows for the distinction between removing blank rows and removing rows based on a particular column.
Keep the source intact with FILTER
If you want a cleaned view rather than physically deleting source rows, Excel’s FILTER function can return matching rows as a dynamic array. Its inclusion condition is a Boolean array, so the condition must check the columns that define a wholly blank record. A condition based on only one column can mistakenly omit records that contain data elsewhere.
Rank #4
This produces a separate result and leaves the original range in place; it is not a full-row deletion command. Microsoft documents the function and its behavior in FILTER function.

| Method | What it does | Best suited to | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Go To Special > Blanks | Selects blank cells in a selected range. | One-time inspection and cleanup in Excel for Windows. | A blank cell does not establish that its whole row is empty. |
| Filter a column for blanks | Temporarily displays rows with blank values in that field. | Inspecting candidate rows in a range or table. | Other fields may still contain valid data; filtering hides rows rather than deleting them. |
| Power Query > Remove Blank Rows | Removes rows that are blank as records. | Repeatable query-based cleanup. | Review the output and distinguish whole-row removal from a column-specific blank test. |
| FILTER function | Returns matching rows as a dynamic array without deleting the source. | Creating a cleaned view while preserving the original data. | The inclusion condition must test the intended columns. |
