TypeScript arrays and Python lists are both ordered, mutable collections, but they differ in how their element types are handled. TypeScript adds static type descriptions to JavaScript arrays; Python’s built-in list can hold objects of different types, even when an annotation describes a preferred element type. Their everyday operations often map neatly to one another, but the languages’ methods and return values are not identical.
What is a TypeScript array?
TypeScript uses JavaScript arrays and adds type syntax that lets the type checker check the intended element type. For example, number[] and Array<number> both describe an array of numbers:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
const scores: number[] = [10, 20, 30];
const alsoScores: Array<number> = [10, 20, 30];
These annotations do not create different kinds of runtime containers: both declarations use JavaScript arrays. The distinction is in how TypeScript describes and checks the values in your code. The TypeScript Handbook documents both forms at TypeScript: Everyday Types — Arrays.

A TypeScript tuple is useful when a collection has a defined positional shape rather than a uniform element type. For instance, [string, number] describes a two-item structure whose first position is a string and second is a number. Use an array type for a collection of similar items; use a tuple type when each position has a distinct meaning or type. See the TypeScript Handbook — Tuple Types.

How are Python lists different?
Python’s built-in list is a mutable sequence that can contain arbitrary Python objects. A list may contain values of different types; Python does not make the built-in container homogeneous just because you use an annotation to express an intended element type. The official documentation describes lists in Python’s built-in types reference.
Python also has tuples, which are immutable sequences often used to represent a fixed collection of values. This is a useful conceptual comparison, but it is not a one-to-one equivalence: TypeScript tuple types describe positional types, while Python tuples are a distinct immutable runtime sequence. Python’s documentation covers sequence types at Python sequence types.

- TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
- TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

What are the common method equivalents?
When translating everyday code, treat these as practical mappings, not exact equivalents. TypeScript calls a property or method on an array; Python commonly uses a built-in function or an operator on a list.

Python’s append, reverse, and sort methods change the existing list in place. The methods described here return None, not the modified list. That means you should call them as statements rather than assigning their result back to the list:
items.append("new")
items.reverse()
items.sort()
For example, items = items.sort() assigns None to items. The behavior and return values are specified in Python’s list documentation.

How should you choose between a list, tuple, array, and tuple type?
- In TypeScript, use
number[]orArray<number>for an array whose items are intended to be numbers. - In TypeScript, use a tuple type such as
[string, number]when the positions have specific meanings and types. - In Python, use a list when you need a mutable sequence; it can hold any Python objects, regardless of whether an annotation documents an intended element type.
- In Python, use a tuple for an immutable sequence or a fixed collection of values.
