To remove a comment in Google Sheets, open its discussion card, click More (three dots), then choose Delete. To remove a cell note, right-click its cell and choose Delete notes. These are separate features: resolving a comment closes its discussion but does not delete it.
First, tell comments and notes apart
A comment is a discussion attached to a cell. It can include replies and can be resolved or reopened. A note is text attached to a cell, without a discussion thread. Use the comment card to manage a comment; use the cell menu to remove a note.

Delete a comment
- Open the comment attached to the cell. If you cannot locate it, use Show all comments to open the Comments panel; search by keyword or username, or filter by open or resolved status and, in Sheets, by sheet.
- On the comment card, click More (three dots).
- Choose Delete and confirm if prompted.
Google’s documented Help workflow deletes comments one at a time. The official instructions reviewed for this article do not establish a built-in bulk-delete-comments command, so do not assume there is a supported bulk UI option.
Resolve a comment without deleting it
If you want to close a discussion but retain it, open the comment and click Resolve. A resolved comment remains available from the Comments panel and can be reopened. Google’s Help explains: “To see a comment that you closed, click Comments at the top corner of the window.” Choose Delete instead when you want to remove the thread.

Remove a note from a cell
- Find the cell with the note. Hovering over a cell may reveal its note.
- Right-click the cell.
- Choose Delete notes.
The menu instruction comes from a Google support community answer by a volunteer product expert, rather than a Google employee. Google’s Apps Script documentation also describes removing a note programmatically by setting the cell’s notes property to null. See Range.setNote(note) for that developer route.
What if you cannot delete a comment?
For ordinary use, try the documented comment-card menu. If you are using the Sheets API, deletion rights depend on authorship: the API permits deleting a whole thread only when the caller authored its head post. A user can delete only their own replies, and a reply containing a comment action or assignee email cannot be deleted through that reply request. These API restrictions are distinct from the click-by-click interface guidance; consult the Sheets API comments guide if you are building an integration.

Keyboard shortcuts
Google’s computer shortcut reference lists Shift + F2 to insert or edit a note and E to resolve the selected comment. It does not list a dedicated shortcut for deleting a comment. Google cautions that some shortcuts may not work for every language or keyboard, so use the menus if a shortcut is unavailable. See Google Sheets keyboard shortcuts.
