Wash the tumbler with water and mild detergent, using a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Rinse it thoroughly and dry it with a soft cloth. Check the maker’s care instructions first: plastic types and product guidance differ, and persistent cloudiness may come from scratches or other surface damage that cleaning cannot reverse.
Why a plastic tumbler may look cloudy
Cloudiness is not always a removable water spot. Hard-water minerals can leave deposits as water dries, while detergent, grease, or drink residue can dull the surface. Scratches and other surface changes can also make plastic look cloudy. Appearance alone does not reliably identify the cause across all tumbler materials.

Some causes are specific to a product or material. For example, Fortessa Tableware Solutions’ copolyester care guidance notes that sunscreen exposure at high temperatures can cause clouding or staining; that is not a general explanation for ordinary water spots.

Clean it gently, in this order
- Check the care instructions. Read the tumbler’s label or maker’s guidance before choosing a cleaning method. The American Cleaning Institute’s general plastic-cleaning advice says to follow manufacturer instructions and test a cleaner on an inconspicuous area.
- Wash with mild detergent. Use water and a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Avoid steel wool, metal scouring pads, and harsh abrasives, which can scratch plastic. Carlisle FoodService Products gives this type of caution in its polycarbonate drinkware care instructions.
- Rinse thoroughly. Rinse away detergent and loosened residue rather than leaving it on the surface.
- Dry with a soft cloth. Drying removes residual water that might otherwise leave new spots. Fortessa’s material-specific guidance also recommends thorough drying.
- Inspect the surface before trying anything stronger. If haze remains, do not assume that more scrubbing or a stronger chemical will restore clarity. Ask the manufacturer for product-specific advice.
When a product-specific extra step may help
Tervis gives a limited option for its own classic insulated drinkware: if dishwasher residue or haze appears, handwash with mild detergent. If it remains, Tervis says to try a very small amount of baking soda on a soft, wet cloth. This is Tervis’s guidance for classic insulated drinkware, not a universal recipe for every plastic tumbler. What to avoid
- Abrasive scrubbing: Steel wool and metal scouring pads can scratch plastic and worsen its appearance.
- Unapproved dishwasher or chemical use: Do not assume a tumbler is dishwasher-safe or compatible with a particular cleaner. Follow the care instructions for that product.
- Chlorine bleach without product approval: The Choice plastic-drinkware care guide warns that chlorine bleach can cause permanent cloudiness in its plastic drinkware. Treat that as a product-guide warning, not a universal claim about every plastic formulation. The Choice / WebstaurantStore care guide also identifies hard water and inadequate cleaning as possible contributors to dullness.
- Assuming vinegar, citric acid, or descaler is safe for every tumbler: No universal, manufacturer-backed treatment applies to all plastic materials. Check the maker’s instructions before using a chemical cleaner.
If the cloudiness does not come off
Persistent haze may be permanent surface damage rather than residue. Avoid escalating to rougher tools or an unverified treatment; contact the maker if you need product-specific guidance. If the tumbler appears permanently damaged, replacement may be more practical than trying to polish it clear. Cleaning cannot be counted on to reverse scratches or other lasting surface changes.
