To restore a Samsung Galaxy after a factory reset, use the route that matches where the backup was saved: Google device backups are restored during the phone’s initial setup, Samsung Cloud backups can be restored in Settings, and Smart Switch can restore a backup already saved on a PC or Mac. A reset does not recover files that were never backed up.
First, identify where the backup is
Choose a restore route based on the backup’s location, not just the apps installed on the phone. A backup must still exist and be accessible through the original account or storage device. Before starting, check the backup date and device name, and confirm you can sign in to the account that holds it.

Restore a Google backup during phone setup
Google device backup is restored through the Setup Wizard, not from ordinary Settings after setup is complete. Samsung’s setup instructions describe selecting a copy or restore option, signing in to the Google account, choosing an available device backup, and following the on-screen prompts (Samsung’s Galaxy setup instructions).
- Turn on the reset Galaxy and proceed through the initial setup screens until you reach the copy or restore step.
- Choose the option to restore from a backup, then sign in to the Google account used to make it.
- Select the relevant device backup. Check its date and device name if more than one is listed.
- Choose the data available for restoration and follow the prompts to finish setup.
Available items depend on what was included in the backup. Google Photos items are handled separately from the device backup.

If setup is already finished
The documented Google restore route is presented during initial setup. Returning to that step may require resetting the phone again. A further factory reset erases current local data, so first save anything new that you need and consult Samsung’s instructions for your specific Galaxy model before proceeding. Do not reset again unless you have confirmed that the backup you want is available.
Check Android-version compatibility
A Google backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to a phone running an older Android version, according to Samsung’s setup and backup guidance (Samsung Australia’s Google backup guidance). The phone’s Android version therefore matters when deciding whether an available backup can be used.

Restore a Samsung Cloud backup
If the backup is in Samsung Cloud, sign in with the Samsung account associated with it. Samsung’s general route is Settings > Samsung account > Samsung Cloud > Restore data. On some Galaxy versions, the route appears under Settings > Accounts and backup. Menu names and available content vary by model and software version, and Samsung Cloud availability and content can differ by country and carrier (Samsung’s Galaxy backup and restore guide; Samsung UK’s backup and restore guidance; Samsung Australia’s Samsung Cloud guidance).

Restore a Smart Switch backup from a computer
This method works only if a Smart Switch backup was saved to a Windows PC or Mac before the reset. Installing Smart Switch after the reset does not recreate a missing backup. Samsung’s computer workflow uses a compatible USB cable to connect the phone to the computer (Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions for Windows and Mac).

These are alternatives only if the earlier backup is actually on compatible storage or the old phone is still available. They cannot recover a local file erased by the factory reset if no copy of it exists.
Samsung’s instructions for external-storage and device-to-device options may vary by Galaxy model and region (Samsung France’s Galaxy backup and restore guidance).

If the backup does not appear
- Confirm the account: Check that you signed in with the Google or Samsung account used when the backup was created.
- Check the location: A Google backup will not appear as a Samsung Cloud backup, and a Smart Switch computer backup must be restored from the computer where it is stored.
- Check date and device: If several backups appear, verify which phone and backup date you need before selecting one.
- Check access and connection: Make sure you can access the account or computer, and that the phone has a network connection where one is required. For Smart Switch, check the cable connection and respond to permission prompts.
- Consider availability and compatibility: Cloud options can vary by model, software, country, and carrier; Google restore also has the Android-version restriction described above.
Samsung Australia states that Google Drive backup data other than items backed up to Google Photos is automatically deleted after 57 consecutive days without device use. This is a region-specific statement on Samsung Australia’s page, last updated 17 September 2026; check the current status of your own Google account rather than assuming an older backup remains available (Samsung Australia’s Google backup guidance).
