Anthropic says the mark is woven into choices of words, not stored as hidden characters, so light editing is not guaranteed to remove it. A file may instead carry a separate C2PA Content Credential in its metadata; that is not the same as a text watermark. The right answer depends on which kind of mark you mean—and neither a missing mark nor a positive detection proves who authored the content.
First, identify which kind of mark you mean
“Claude watermark” can refer to three different things:
- Text watermark: a statistical signal embedded in word choices in supported Claude-generated text.
- File credential: signed C2PA Content Credentials that may be attached to a supported generated file’s metadata.
- Visible label: text or a badge added by an app, export workflow, or document template. Its removal depends on that application, not on Anthropic’s text watermark system.
The text signal and file credential work differently, so editing text and checking file metadata are not interchangeable ways to remove or verify them.
Can you remove a Claude watermark from text?
Anthropic says its watermark is imperceptible, woven directly into text, and designed not to change meaning, quality, or readability. It is not hidden Unicode characters or extra tokens. Instead, the system guides choices among plausible next words so a detector can estimate whether Claude was involved. See Anthropic’s explanation of how Claude’s text watermark works.

Because the signal is in word choices, there is no documented character sequence to search for and delete. Anthropic says light editing probably will not remove it completely; it also says a complete rewrite replacing every word will remove the original signal. That is a substantial change to the text, not a reliable cleaning procedure or assurance that a rewritten passage will evade every check. Anthropic notes that after such a rewrite, it is arguable whether the text can still be described as AI-generated. Its August 14, 2026 explanation says, “The watermark only applies to words Claude chooses.”
If you need the writing to be your own
Make substantive revisions for accuracy, clarity, and your own intended meaning, then verify factual claims and follow the disclosure rules that apply to your work. Do not treat a paraphraser, Unicode scrubber, or text-scrambling tool as a proven watermark remover. If authorship or process matters, keep drafts, source notes, version history, and any relevant disclosure records rather than trying to make a signal disappear.

What about Claude-generated code?
Code has fewer flexible word choices than ordinary prose because exact tokens often determine whether it runs correctly. Anthropic says discretionary parts, such as comments, can still carry a signal; it does not say every Claude-generated code sample is watermarked. Reformatting source code is not an established removal method.
Prioritize correctness: review the code, run appropriate tests, and retain provenance records if you need to document how it was created. Rewriting comments may change the text, but it is not a dependable way to remove or diagnose a watermark, and changing code merely to alter a signal can introduce bugs.

How to check a file for Claude credentials
Anthropic’s public Claude Content Checker checks supported media files for a Claude Content Credential. It checks the file credential, not the text inside a document, and it is not a universal AI detector or an authorship-verification tool. Anthropic says the checker runs in the browser and the file stays on-device rather than being stored. The listed media formats are supported up to 100 MB; check the page for the current format and size limits.
- Open Anthropic’s Claude Content Checker.
- Select or upload a supported media file within the checker’s stated size limit.
- Read the result as a credential check: a detected credential indicates Claude may have made or processed the file, not which person authored its contents.
If a file was converted or resaved, its metadata credential may no longer be available. That does not prove the file was never processed by Claude. Likewise, finding a credential does not establish who created the underlying content. Anthropic’s current Content Credentials guidance explains that supported generated files may include signed C2PA credentials.

Anthropic describes a text detector as a separate API that is in private preview for eligible organizations, not a generally available public text-checking feature. Its public file checker does not analyze text. Detection can also be affected by short passages, extensive editing, paraphrasing, translation, mixing with other writing, unsupported models or features, and loss of file metadata.
A positive text signal means Claude may have processed the content; it is not conclusive proof that Claude authored the original material. Someone might use Claude to proofread, translate, summarize, or convert text written by someone else. A negative result is not proof that Claude was uninvolved. Anthropic’s current guidance on Claude Content Credentials describes these limits and the distinction between file credentials and text detection.

What not to rely on
- Light edits: Anthropic says these may leave the text signal.
- “AI humanizer” or remover claims: no official or independently validated tool is established here as a reliable way to remove Claude’s watermark.
- Metadata stripping: removing or losing a file credential only makes that credential unavailable; it does not establish original authorship or erase a text watermark.
- Code formatting changes: formatting is not evidence that a watermark has been removed, and code changes can affect behavior.
